The writer of the songs & singer of "Set Me Free", Richard Kerr, co wrote Manilow's "Mandy" & "Looks Like We Made It" ( he also wrote for Glenn Madeiros )
"Jesus Christ Superstar" was in vogue at the time, hence the 3 gospel rock numbers. The end title song "Set Me Free" is genuinely superb. The opening to this film is, without a doubt, as distinctive as you'll see in British cinema. I'd rather watch this film than "Peeping Tom" any day of the week.
This is like "What if Ron Granier wrote a soul spiritual"-- It has a subtle OMEGA MAN vibe to it. Way better than the crap that they had me singing in Swing Choir in the 70s, which amounted to child abuse.
I am lovimng the whole psychedelic biblical soul and vibe of this tune! I saw the movie, The Fiend not so long ago, which I have to say was pretty cool. Mind you, the protaganist in the movie, kind of reminded me of John Major or a very messed up Alan Carr-and no, I was not on acid at the time of watching the movie! Otherwise, this is a great piece of underground 70s British cinema, well worthy of praise! ;0)
The `Shirley Bassey` in the clip of `The Fiend` is actually lookalike Maxine Barry. She has been a background extra in Coronation Street as well as winning `Stars in their Eyes` with a brilliant take off of Shirley Bassey.
the ending of the film the fiend is hilarious, what was going on in the early 1970s!? in the wicker man, edward woodward also saw some kind of lynching, as did the ending of sitting target with the main actor being oliver reed, it seemed to be a trend in films! i'm amazed! patrick mcgee was lucky, he got to work with kubrick as the wheelchair writer in a clockwork orange.
`Patrick McGee` is actually Patrick MAGEE who was a noted stage actor who worked with Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. He played the aprt of Seamus McCann in the 1968 film of Pinter's `The Birthday Party`. Patrick Magee died in 1982 at the age of 60.
Also watched that showing that was on about 3 in the morning the other week. Completely bonkers, great ending!
Apparently the singer, Maxine Barrie, turned up years later on the first series of Stars In Their Eyes, and won the series outright, as.........Shirley Bassey (who else?!)
the music is beat. what is this a flower children musical/ fake broadway musical version of "gospel"? nothing's scary here. nothing bizarre either. just tacky and goofy. very unMysterious.
cult classic? no one's even heard of it.

@zackhanscom Er, that's why it's considered a cult movie.I wouldn't call it a classic but it's certainly a cult 70's British horror flick.

@zackhanscom I think you need to look up the word "cult" when it comes to movies, Zack.

That's some seriously bad lip-synching there with the singer-- But she's still better at it than Jewel.
