It looks so cool.....i havent got an electric guitar :(
There's no space in my house and my parents think it's too much noise! It sounds so cool though! And it looks easy...but I can only dream...i'm so jealous.
@fouss14 it's not that it won't work but using a cello bow might be easier because it's longer so it's easier to handle. plus coming from playing both cello and violin, cello bows (at least to me) seem to be able to withstand more force without breaking hairs all the time.
Nice. I love that song, and knowing how it's played adds just that much more appreciation to the simple nuances of the music that most people overlook while focusing on the whole.
@MaggiZkater i have no idea. I bought it a long time ago on eBay. It was very cheap, maybe 20 $, so I'm guessing it's low quality. You might get a better tone with a better bow, - I haven't tried, so I really don't know.
Does the rosin rub off on the strings making it a bugger to play with a regular plectrum? Also, does it make a mess on the body of your guitar?
I only ask because a mate of mine who plays violin (beautifully :3 ) has a load of white, powdery-looking stuff on his violin just under where he bows. I could just ask him, but we play different instruments and I'd figure you know.
@kenan6346 I usually draw the bow at the same point on the string, and that's a point where I usually don't use the plectrum. It will leave some rosin on the strings, but you can remove most of it with a finger and I haven't had any problems with it. Yes, it will leave some rosin on the body and the pick-ups, but it's not a big problem (for me, that is).
@tareke Cheers. I've gotten myself a bow and I'm starting to get the hang of it. But: do you get that sustained sound from the effects, or does your bowing technique come into it? I can't make a sustained tone when I'm changing the bowing direction, I assume delay/reverb takes care of that? Thanks man, great video btw.
hi there, loved it, i own a line 6 pod x3 live, how do i get a sound like this. i own a violin bow but why do u say the wont work, (and i use resin) thanks mate 5*
@niks096 thanks alot! i'm not familiar with the x3 live, but generally you'll need a fuzzy tone, some delay and the sickest reverb you can find. experiment - it's part of the fun. yup, i've realised that a violin bow may work as well. it's shorter, but that can often be a good thing.
that's great, but i'm a bit confused. i tried this on my own and everything works fine, but when the bow ends and i have to stroke the string again the sustain stops completely and somehow that's kinda logical. i'm also using reverb and stuff but that's not the point i think. so, does anyone have a tip how to let the sustain flow like in this video?
Thanks! I tried using a violin bow once and it didn't produce any sound at all, except some weird squeals, sort of.. It might have been a bad bow though - I don't know. But I do know that most people recommend using a cello bow and not a violin bow. Jónsi in Sigur Rós for instance.
I've heard that the violin bow has fewer hairs than the cello bow, could that be it? Tell me if you find out anything! :)
I use a bowed guitar in my band as well, and used to play with a violon bow. There's not a big difference between the two in the sound, but the cello bow is easier to play because it is longer. You don't have to strike up and down as much as a violon bow.

i cant find the tabs for this song with a bow , could you send it to me.
zoojude 3 years ago
you just have to copy what you hear. remember, it's played on just ONE of the strings, so it shouldn't be a problem. good luck :)
