If you are going to Mainland China, some of the tones in Taiwanese Mandarin are different, and Taiwanese word choice may sound weird to Mainlanders, but they will understand you.

I learned a lot of my Chinese on the Mainland, and when I went to Taiwan, I said some offensive/inappropriate words, but that's the fun in learning a new language!

I've been trying to pick up a litlle chinese by watching Chinese dramas. I've got hooked on a show called 武林外传. Thus far I've been picking up on pronounciations, and a recognitions of basic pinyins. Very intresting language. :p
