There seems to be some misguided belief that because the oil is geographically close to Scotland that they have ownership of it. This is not the case at all, and if Scotland got independence they would be likely to see only a very small proportion of proceeds. The oil companies have contracts going on well into after we will be dead and buried and the proceeds they pay are to the British government.
