Wow. I have this 45. It's one of the first songs I learned on my guitar. Too bad her sister's voice didn't come out more. Her's was the melody and Carly's the harmony. great video.
In Austria the television sandman, called "Betthupferl" (it was on ORF TV between 1959 and 1990) came into our Roaring-Sixties-Children-Rooms and the music was from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Klaviersonate, KV 476 or so, you find it in Youtube as well).
Lucy and Carly Simon were my cousin's country friends in New England. I met them when they pushed me into a canal the summer I spent there. Never knew which one did it. They were older than me (but we were all kids) and helped fish me out, laughing. I recall that each time I hear this. They later began recording and sang "Waley, Waley" for the movie "Nobody Waved Goodbye". I have played their original album until it sounds just like this video! Lucy became a nurse, Carly became famous.
No one does it quite as well as the person who first adapted this classic nursery rhyme to song, Buffy Sainte-Marie. You might be able to see her perform it on Sesame Street. Thank you, YouTube, for helping keep the music (and history, in general) alive.
Thank you for posting this. I know the poem by heart .
Shortly before this version of came out in the 1960s, I, too, made a folk melody of my own to the same poem and performed it at college. And - wow - others did the same thing! My point: some poems touch base -- same thing happened with the verse "Unto Everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven." well, I too, started performing my own version and ½ a year later the Byrds came out with their Turn, Turn, Turn.
In '66, around this time, they went off to "Swinging" London, where Carly ended up with engaged Willie Donaldson, who described her as "the answer to any sane man's prayers; funny, quick, erotic, extravagantly talented"......of course, he dumoed her once they got engaged.(& fell in love with a crack pipe)
This was the first song I learned to play on the guitar while singing it. I heard it over WLS radio station Chicago. Sunday nights used to be the best when I was growing up for folk music. I'll have to check out the Simon Sisters recording mentioned - it would be worth it to have this on it.
carly's mic is louder and with her singing the harmony and lucys lesser heard voice singing the melody, it gives the song a strange yet interesting edge to it - like looking at a negative image of a photograph...compare this with the studio version and you'll see what i'm saying. love this video.
Thanks for posting this. I recently got the CD the simon sisters Winkin', Blinkin', And Nod: the kapp recordings. I had to get it throgh amazon as it isn't for sale in the UK.
what do you mean, lucy is the real talent. sure, carly has been far more a commericial success, but their talents are equal...very differant but equal.
Carly Simon and HER SISTER?? That's not just her sister, that's Lucy Simon, composer of the Broadway musical The Secret Garden

The lyrics to this were a children's book that my mom read to me when I was a child. Always loved it.

Why did Carly's sister never stay in the music industry? She is Great.
sixtiesforever1966 11 months ago
@sixtiesforever1966 She did. She's a famous composer, most well-known for the musical "The Secret Garden"

I do still have the vinyl album this was on and the rest of the songs are awesome.
I have a way to transfer to my own private CD which I should do before the vinyl goes bad. One of my most favorite Folk Albums of all time.

This song is precious.
I am going to learn it on my guitar so I can sing it to my cousin's two little ones when I go visit them after Christmas!

The DB version is nice but it's a little haunting sounding.

Gorgeous! Is there an audio filter that could be used to remove the static?

What a great find. They sound great, but I think it's Carly's sister who is the REAL talent in the family. Strange how things turn out sometimes.

I think that's Lucy with her -- she's not bad herself.

I think it's a mole, or a pimple. Lets call it a mole she got rid of later.
Her voice will never die. It's so beautiful.

I had the chance of buying this record second hand...and didn't. I'll be damned forever.
But it's nice to see this, Carly's first foray into music. Too bad about the hum, though.
