As far as I'm concerned, if someone can create something that makes you feel, or makes you think about the world around you or anything like that it's art. So if an actor can make you do any of that through playing a character, than there is no way he isn't an artist.

Could anyone argue that certain actors don't have an artistic ability to infuse roles they play with greater, more convincing realism and/or metaphor than they would have without them? The actor christopher walkens comes to my mind. He delivers consistently odd, memorable, one of a kind performances. I can remember a B-movie I saw with him in it. One of those awful shootem up action types.
The question: "Is this art?" Is an old question. And it's a stupid question. The answer is always yes.

At a certain point, all creative expression merges into a communal art; at that point, there is no distinction between the various art forms. A film or mixed media work proves that. Therefore, acting is an art form. For that matter, anything done with panache could be said to be an artistic expression.
I agree that acting is an art-form, but I also think that the writers are the ones that deserve the most spotlight. (unless it's shitty writing, and the actor is so good it seems profound)
I disagree with you paul because I think that being an artist requires creation and that acting is "making art" in the same way as reproducing painting is. The actor takes the art made by an artist and acts it.

I don't think actors are liars. Some might be. To me a liar implies deceit. Actors don't actually think they are making you believe they are actually that person in real life. I have never left a movie thinking Robert De niro actually was a mental taxi driver or that Al Pacino is a blind war veteran in real life.
I get the same feeling as when I read a book(perhaps slightly different). I have at points left a movie wishing a character existed in real life lol. That is good acting and writing that causes that. Like the main character "Juno" from Juno. I was like "aww she is so charming I wish she was real". lol.
I said that on his video but I'll repeat it. Movies are collaborative efforts. I would say that some special effects in movies are even art. The character golem is a work of art that included the work of a voice actor, traditional artists who draw, graphic designers, animators etc. Several different people created that piece of art. Some actors are artists and some, some actors are bad at acting, perhaps that is poor art?

Could anyone argue that certain actors don't have an artistic ability to infuse roles they play with greater, more convincing realism and/or metaphor than they would have without them? The actor christopher walkens comes to my mind. He delivers consistently odd, memorable, one of a kind performances. I can remember a B-movie I saw with him in it. One of those awful shootem up action types.

The question: "Is this art?" Is an old question. And it's a stupid question. The answer is always yes.
It's just like the question of beauty. Even if there's just one solitary person who believes something is beautiful, then it is. Beauty is not an objective judgment, nether is art.

the photo is real, the image inside is a copy of the light reflecting off another object at some point in time, and therefore is not an object in itself.
but then again, who's to say the original object is real or not?

Just because what someone creates may not be real doesn't mean its a lie. Unless its the artist intent to mislead you through their work, its not a lie.

Personally, I think you'd have to point at the stages instead of the screen. There's some basic integrity that is taken away from acting thanks to bluescreens and fifteen takes.

Even though I play the roll often, I think directors are over rated. I think writers make the film. I'm one of those, too. No offense to VH, but he probably doesn't even know what exactly Cinematographer or Director of Photography/DP does. :-P

At a certain point, all creative expression merges into a communal art; at that point, there is no distinction between the various art forms. A film or mixed media work proves that. Therefore, acting is an art form. For that matter, anything done with panache could be said to be an artistic expression.

I disagree with you paul because I think that being an artist requires creation and that acting is "making art" in the same way as reproducing painting is. The actor takes the art made by an artist and acts it.
But this is more a semantical debate than discution about art, words have nothing to do with definitions.

i think actors are artists...moreso in plays than at the movie but movies are seen as an art. also depends on the quality of the acting but in some movies you can really see the art.

Right on! And besides, "art" and "artist" are really broad terms. The word artist only really implies one who is involved in the arts or creating art. It doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be good at it, lol! One might say that a photographer isn't an artist because they just point a camera and shoot, compared to a painter or sculptor, but it's apples and oranges. Is a crucifix in a jar of piss art? Some think so, others don't so it's really just a matter of opinion.

I completely agree with you, Paul. When Pavarotti sang an opera he didn't write, was he still not being an artist? His interpretations contained traces of his persona. If a painter paints a picture of a building he did not design, is it still not a work of art?
Pacino, Spacey, De Niro, Walken - artists, all.

I don't think actors are liars. Some might be. To me a liar implies deceit. Actors don't actually think they are making you believe they are actually that person in real life. I have never left a movie thinking Robert De niro actually was a mental taxi driver or that Al Pacino is a blind war veteran in real life.

I get the same feeling as when I read a book(perhaps slightly different). I have at points left a movie wishing a character existed in real life lol. That is good acting and writing that causes that. Like the main character "Juno" from Juno. I was like "aww she is so charming I wish she was real". lol.

I said that on his video but I'll repeat it. Movies are collaborative efforts. I would say that some special effects in movies are even art. The character golem is a work of art that included the work of a voice actor, traditional artists who draw, graphic designers, animators etc. Several different people created that piece of art. Some actors are artists and some, some actors are bad at acting, perhaps that is poor art?
