@ma3dukan91 VR stands for "Vibration Reduction." Basically, when it is turned on, the camera compensates for any camera shake from moving the camera.

Thanks Jared. I'm missing something here. AF-C for moving subject, AF-S for still subject, got that. But why cant I just leave it on C for a still subject too? Maybe I'm answering my own question here, but maybe S is good if there was movement behind my subject that I don't care about? So in that case C would get confused? And might this also depend on if I am focusing on a single point vs a wide area?

The D3100 manual says:

+ Single-point AF: User selects focus point using multi selector, camera focuses on subject in selected focus point only. Use with stationary subjects.

+ Dynamic-area AF: In AF-A and AF-C focus modes, user selects focus point manually, but

camera will focus based on information from surrounding focus points if subject briefly leaves selected point. In AF-S focus mode, user selects focus point manually camera focuses on subject in selected focus point only.
