I have heard this song a number of times....but when you sit inside the chapel at Kilmainham Goal it makes the song very real. This is beautifully done!
A lot of people are ignorant and do not know the facts and in fact there were quite a few well known protestants that were republicans or nationalists such as Wolfe Tone and James Napper Tandy. That would shut a few of the bigots up who know nothing
always cry listening to this song...... we all sang it at me granny nd grandads 50th anniversary a couple a days ago, love it. shows the torture of irish history x
I have been to Kilmainham Jail three times, very interesting history, each tour starts in the chapel where James & Grace got married and they also pass James' cell and I guess one can also look through a lukehole in the door of Graces' cell and see the drawing she had painted at the wall.
This song is absolutely great, still I have to admit I prefer Jim McCann's version.
@impongo2 it's time you grew up, the war is over so don't you think you should stop the sectarian bullshit, read up on you're history and you might learn something you're schools, parents and politicians don't want you to learn, just remember this the first ever Republicans were protestant and bobby sands' father was a protestant, as were many more volunteers in the armed struggle.

The perfect melding of a poignant story, woven in a beautiful tapestry of melody and harmonies, and then exquisitely interpreted by Anthony Kearns, a singer who can melt hearts just as easily as he can stir them to joy and laughter. This is the video I use to introduce friends to Anthony's rich voice and skillful artistry. There aren't too many videos of him, so many thanks for posting this.
Such a beautiful song that no doubt holds a lot of emotion in it. The revolution was not a religious matter, but a conflict to overthrow the oppressive English government of the time. This song honours the people who fought for their beliefs. Lovely song and a great voice. Thanks for posting.
great song but just to let you know the Anglo Irish Treaty didn't divide the country into north and south. It was the Government of Ireland Act, 1920.

Deeply moving! Splendidly done, machree! When you realize Grace Clifford died when I was 13 years old - some Plunkett girls were elementary school classmates - possibly relatives - ? - my father telling me of hedgerow schools, Michael Collins - the Easter Rising - The Great Hunger -
Thanks too, for the text there of one of Joseph Plunkett's poems beautiful poems. Heartbreaking - the song - the singer - the story - "A terrible beauty" indeed
@PETERSNOTGAY08 I visited the Plunkett grave where I believe Grace is, and I took a photo of it, and placed a bunch of flowers on there. It was a very moving moment as this beautiful song is too.JMPlunkett's grave may be at another location I believe !
@PURPLEBEATTIE1 The grave of Grace is at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, the grave of her husband ia among the other easter rising people graves in Arbour Hill Dublin. If you want to check Arbour Hill out you gotta be there early, they only open the cemetery/church in the mornings, I was always too late myself )-:
@PURPLEBEATTIE1 Yeh try. But I gotta warn U, Glasnevin Cemetery is huuuge and there's different sections with thousands of graves. But there might be staff that can point U at the right direction. I've never seen Graces' grave myself, but know where Michael Collin's grave is. I mostly go there just for walks, nice n peaceful n nice motifs for photos with all the different headstones, high crosses & big O'Connell tower. Very nice esp in autumn with the colourful leaves everywhere. Good Luck! (-:
nobody sings grace like anthony kearns i have heard them all beware the risen people god bless them it wont be long till we the six back and they can rest in peace
When I was in Dublin 2 weeks ago I went on a tour of Kil mainham gaol and went into this chapel, and it was a very poignant moment. K jail is a very grim place, and the cells are very small, with high windows facing the door. I took pics, as a record.
Touchante à l'extrême, chaque fois que je parle de mon séjour en Irlande en juillet 71, je cite cette histoire en témoignage du courage des combattants pour la liberté.
Never fails to move me. Why couldn't the jailers let the couple have a couple of hours tog, they might have been able to get a child out of it to at least give Grace an extra memory.
It does seem strange, this was 93 years ago. Unless there has been a misunderstanding, and perhaps this person meant a relative of JMPlunkett was known to them.
Oh god, I cry everytime I hear this song. It is so sad, Joseph's pain is so apparent. Such profound words... "All I want from this dark place is to have you here with me." He sounds so desolate, thank god they agreed for he and Grace to marry before his execution. Joseph and the others were true patriots. We should never ever forget these brave souls.
Sweetie4life07-You are correct, Joseph did not write this song, but Anthony Kearns sings it so well that the listener is lead to believe that they are listening to Joseph's words. He expresses Josephs anguish and pain so eloquently, that one feels that they are witnessing Joseph's pain and his final moments with Grace.
Great to see many protestant republicans still exist. No matter what the British media tell you, Irish Republicanism and the struggle for Irish freedom has never been about religion but the freedom of all Irishmen and women irrespective of religion, race and even political beliefs.
agree with that 100pc, toicfaidh ar la ,irish men and irish women, catholic and protestant ,tcofiodh ar la ,dont let them devide us ,we are a nation all together ,
My ancestors are Irish, Welsh, Scots and a bit of English, I fell in love with this song in the 1980s and it never hit home as hard as this video what really happened it made it real. I knew it was a true story I had read it, but this drove it home. Eirinn go' Bragh!
As an Irish exile singer here in England I'm truly moved by this performance and first time reading the full grace and Joseph story, I don't mind admitting I wept hearing this version. I feel I must learn it now as my tribute to my land's very brave men and women, and I must go visit Kilmainham soon. Loved this and will domy best to go see Kearns live.
The 1st time I purchased an Irish Tenor's recording, I listened to this and cried. While unacquainted with the story, it so moved me. I cried more than once. Seeing the Irish Tenors during Irish Fest in Milwaukee WI was memorable. I read Morgan Llywelyn's book, 1916: A Novel of the Irish Rebellion, and knew the story to be true. I'm re-reading the book and will share it, this video and a book of poetry by the 1916 poets with former co-workers when we meet at County Clare in Milw. in Feb 2008.
Anthony makes you feel HE is Joseph singing to Grace. The Irish Tenors are wonderful and Anthony is the voice of this generation! Oh to see him (and them) in concert again.
26+6=1 May Joseph and the others not have died in vain.
I have come back to listen again. Beautiful. This song makes me so sad. Firstly because of the story it tells and also because my sister, Grace, died a few years with cancer and her daughter (only 17 at the time ) sang this all the time. It broke my heart - in fact it still does.
So Beautiful! I love this story of love of country and love for each other! Mr. Kearns precious, beautiful voice brings their passion to life. Joseph and Ms. Gifford-Plunket are true heros and worth admiring...even from the States...I will share with many, this extordinary and easy to understand snapshot of their touching & loving story. Thank you so much for making me FEEL their story!
anthony kearns has the most powerful, precise and pure voice i have ever heard- incredible is an understatement- if i only had wish, it would be to meet him and shake his hand and thank him for singing 'Grace"
Emo: You are so right! I will pass on your regards when I see Anthony (AGAIN!) in concert on Oct 26th & the 28th in Richmond,Va.His concerts are unbelievable!! You really should try to get to one or ten!!
There is nothing quite like hearing Anthony sing "Grace" in person. It is very much worth attending one of his solo concerts and I encourage you to do so. I've attended several of his concerts including one in Wicklow, Ireland. I've also had the honor of meeting and talking with him. He's a very nice person and a gifted singer.
How the women who loved these men paid dearly. Kit Keirnan lost Michael Collins! Grace never remarried! The women who supported their men and who also served deserve a better place of honour! Anthony Kearns is the best!
I have a misty memory of being brought as a young child to Grace Plunkett's funeral in 1955. If you'd like to read a powerful account of the whole Rising and of Grace's wedding in Kilmainham may I recommend a book called Rebels by Peter de Rosa.
Yeah, and Peter de Rosa was a part of my tour group at Kilmainham and just "stole" every word I said in the chapel and put it in his book. It's funny to read the book and see my own words coming back at me.
A beautiful voice.

Beautiful song. Mr. Kearns has set a very high bar for anyone daring to perform it.

How the women who loved these men paid dearly. Kit Keirnan lost Michael Collins! Grace never remarried! The women who supported their men and who also served deserve a better place of honour! Anthony Kearns is the best!

Anthony Kearns has a voice from heaven, which is very apparent when singing such a beautiful song.
