This was the Suilven and I have sailed in it many times when it was in the north of Scotland. It never rode bad weather well. I was onboard one very bad night in 1986 and didnt think it would ever end. Ferry from hell is right. Still the Kiwis are a hardy bunch.

This is the MV Suilven crossing Cook Strait in New Zealand. The trip is between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island. I have done this trip many times and a few have been like this , very exiting (nearly scary!!!)

brilliant vid. that is the suilven, an old calmac ferry that used to run between ullapool and stornoway. this is a video taken of her in her new life in the rough seas of the antipodes.

mind you, having said that the vid is pretty old so fleek knows where she is now.

we hated her as a boat but i guess the vid proves that she was more sea worthy than we thought.

Nothing as mad as that but I was on the princess Of Scandinavia coming from Goteborg to Newcastle and though the sea was not rough there was a big swell which caused glasses to slide all over the place.

Also on the old and smaller Zebrugge ferry from hull in a force 7 caused a bumpy but fun ride.

I remember taking the Interislander from Wellington to Picton in similar conditions, at first it was fun and games, young children in the front lounge would jump and be able to touch the ceiling as the ship pitched back ad forth, feeling sick i went to the stern for fresh air, the ship pitched and i became airborne for a few seconds and landed on a table and chairs 5 meters away, trip took 5 hours instead of 3, great views from the top of 25 foot waves though...

Haha its the Suilven that strait shipping in New Zealand used to own. Was a wild storm. The ship didn't sink, Strait Shipping sold the vessel when they bought the Santa Regina. The Suilven was never used for passenger service, it was for freight only, even though it still had lounges and cabins from its previous owner/service. We have only ever lost 1 Cook Strait ferry, many many years ago, so a good safety record really, even with the many storms we get.
