I resent the term, 'British Asian'. It further segregates people by putting them into categories. A brown kid born and brought up in Britain is British. You never hear about white people born and brought up in Britain calling themselves 'British European', do you? The term 'British Asian' is essentially racist, in that the descendants of new european immigrants will easily be able to call themselves 'British', whereas my children will not, simply because they're brown.

The word "Asian" in English really means "East Asian": Chinese, Japs, Koreans, Mongols and so on. It means "Chinaman" or "Slitty eyes" or the likes.
It does not mean "South Asians", those part of people who were conquered and colonized by Dutch and English: Asian Indians, Pakis, Sri Lankis, Bangladeshis and so on...
While more westwards in middle east and Turkey, the terminology is "Oriental" (no longer Asiatic).

The real issue is whether you can describe yourself as English. Everyone was British in 1948 so people came here as British people anyway. But the notion of English identity and Asian identity is a very difficult hurdle to leap.

I didn't think there were many Asians living in America. That's probably because there are a lot more British asians who have adapted to Britain, and started embracing British culture, whereas in America they are always on the side-lines, particularly in the bible-belt where most people I know agree that all the Americans there are racist. No offense. Just my idea.
