My uncle used to drive those swan boats ( If only he worked at Disney today.. I think he got fired though.. ) I wish that ride was still there, alonng with the other old rides!
Simply put : We all should have been born when MK opened xD
Cool Cool Cool. I hope you are archiving this stuff digitally. There have been so many changes to the park through the years, these videos are like a time capsule.
I think having this attraction in the Magic Kingdom's moat would make up for having so few attractions in the Rivers of America. And it looks so relaxing and pretty!
The reason for closing was because of the cost to keep the boats running. They constantly had issues with their natural gas engines and guidance system. Originally the guidance was done with an electronic system but was changed to use water propulsion to turn the boat. Eventually the boats were removed and sold.....that's what it says on Wikipedia
according to disney, too many wrecks happened with the guidance system and waits for the ride. sometimes the boats made the castle look wrong for good pictures. ... according to disney
I knew of the swan boats, but I never knew they traveled all the way back to Jungle Cruise. Though, I've always wondered why they waterway traveled up that way. I don't think the connection behind the tree house and Jungle cruise still exists. Something to check for the next time I work, lol.
Very unique! What a wonderful way to see the park, but it's such a shame these boats are no longer in operation. Their closing predates my birth by four years! How depressing.
The first time I went was 1984 but I was only 5. I wonder if they'd done away with the Swan Boats by then. I wish I got the chance to ride them. I love vintage Disney.
This was a great ride. I remember when they got rid of the boats. You could still see the empty tracks in the water all around the park for years. I truly miss the original Magic Kingdom!!!
ok at one point the film jump cuts as we hear the boat operator sayiing "... opening up in October of this year"
So what was he talking about?
What attraction would have opened in October of 1982?
Anyone know?

It's amazing how much WDW has changed. Walt always said that his parks would always be changing.

They should have never gotten rid of this attraction. It was so simple, elegant, and relaxing for the entire family.

Anyone know what the reason was for them closing the ride?
