@FRAGIORGIO1 I believe this is the famed Thomanerchor of St. Thomas' Church school in Leipzig...the very same choir which 300 years ago the immeasurable Bach directed....
Estoy anonadado!.
I'm not a religeous person either, but love everything apertaining to it: the music, the architecture - what is not to like? - apart from the blue-rinse babble fondling a bishop.

I am so sad to be living in a country where one can not hear this music performed live on Good Friday...it is not even a public holiday here. Thanks to this lovely video I can at least share in the deeply religious spirit of this day!
It says "We are sitting down with tears in our eyes and say to you while you lie in your grave 'rest softly, softly rest'" Well, this is not a perfect translation, but I can't do better. I'm just a german student. ;-P And I do love this music, really! Bach was a great componist and I'm going to sing this as soprano today and tomorrow evening. Yee, I'm nervous! But it will be wonderful. :-)
The official translation: We sit down in tears - and call to thee in the tomb: rest softly! softly rest! Rest, ye exhausted limbs, rest softly, rest well. Your grave and tombstone - shall for the uneasy conscience - be a comfortable pillow And the soul's resting place. Rest softly, softly rest! In the utmost bliss there our eyes shall fall asleep.
"When you love someone, you've gotta trust em', theres no other way. You've got to give them the key to everything thats yours. Otherwise whats the point? -And for a while, i believed, thats the kind of love i had." -BOOM!

We are very lucky people, being able to share this kind of supreme art thanks to the internet. How could Bach imagine, 300 years ago, that his music would be played so far from his home, for so many people he would never meet, so many years after his life? I'm very very sorry for those who could not know his music. We're really very lucky in being here wright know. It's our duty to show it for the new generations...

i'd love to write something as magnificent as what i see and hear whenever i hear this piece, but i haven't even a minusha of the knowledge needed to speak intellegently on the matter.
So, i'll just say this; This piece sets the barometer for other works of art to measure up to, and simply put, it's AS GOOD AS IT GETS!!! Bravo! Bravo! w/an eternal encore!!!

Yep! Simply awesome. I heard the Matthäus Passion live two years ago, and what you wrote is exactly what I thought afterwards! What He did for us is amazing - breathtaking.
And I´m gonna see the Matthäus Passion again tonight! Looking so forward to it!
As we kneel before his grave , holy silence, silence holy could be the ruff trainslation. True the tempo is just right, and the place is rather fitting. Bach was one of a kind sadly, we thank him for all that he left us. Thank you Johann Sebastian Bach
I want this played at my funeral. Though I prefer Leonard Bernstein's version (hard to find--NY Philharmonic, "In Deepest Grief," LP only!) Goodman acquits himself well here. I can honestly say that this piece of Bach's changed my life--for the better.

So true! How can so many churches and sects argue amongst themselves when they all can fellowship in music for the Almighty God?

LB's version was released on two CDs awhile back and has his English translation on it ("In deepest grief")...I like his slower, statelier tempo.
