I think Labyrinth Zone is a huge underground, well, labyrinth, with the Scrap Brain Zone built up over part of it. Act 3 is probably when you have to re-emerge out of the maze to engage in the final fight. Just a suggestion though.

Though there has never been a game (excluding Mario & Sonic which isn't really canon) where Sonic expresses any fear of water or an unwillingness to get near it (the Perfect Chaos fight is a good example.) Yet the anime has made it clear the Sonic can't stand water at all. Since the anime is filled with inconsistencies. I choose to believe that the games are the correct medium. So for now, I'm just going to sit back and listen to the music.

I didn't have that problem. Because I played the game so much when I was little, I gave myself a routine to collect EVERY ring in each level so I had 20+ lives and gaining Continues from bonus levels.

Didn't stop me giving up though when I got to Robotnik. LOL
