@DarkmatterDM I'm sorry for giving my opinion. I guess I should have just said something like "oh man this shit kicks ass" or "this is the greatest song ever" or "they are gods" or "EPIC!"? I guess any slight criticism of the song makes me an asshole. I never didn't say this guy is a bad guitarist or that this song is bad. I simply said the solo lacks focus. I'm sure most guitarists would agree.
By the way, you seem like a condescending douche to me by ending your comment with "just sayin."
@zackvanhalen hey Zack "I WISH I WAS EDDIE" wanna-be vanhalen, it's a JAZZ SOLO because he's a JAZZ GUITARIST you may know MUSIC but you don't know the BAND. and if you were really a guitarist you would understand the cross-stylized arpeggios played in the solo. slow it down it's 3-4 different Jazz Scales corresponding to the same Key or 2. Be passionate about playing guitar all you want, so is he, and it shows in the work he's put in, including his solos.
AAAArgh those first few notes make my goddamn body shake and sweat, if they can get a revival for RATM in the UK of all places then they can definitely GET THESE GUYS BACK IN THE CHARTS!
2:40min in: "OMG that black guy is going to sing near me..." What ever happened to the days when people would actually perform their music when on these shows, actually you know... sing?
The really sad shit about this is that Living Colour was the RIGHT BAND
that debuted at the WRONG TIME. Late 80's music wasn't ready for a black hard rock band. If Living Colour came out today they'd probably be one of the top 5 biggest acts. I mean WHO would they be competing against? Lady Gaga (falling off pianos or hybernating in an egg struggling to come up with a gimmick to get attention/ or Justin Bieber and his 'Baby, Baby, Baby' songs o.0 -or maybe Owl Pellet or whatever that group is
@GreatDestructo They played it in 1984 Too, yeah i noticed the 2007 shit too, my friends did too, Its Gay mate....... I actully first discovered this a month ago ;O but i played the GH3 since it came out
@FatalUnfair - What??? Know your history! From Blues Legends like Wolf, Waters, Albert King, BB King, to R&B Funk Rockers like Eddie Hazel, Ernie Isley, Michael Hampton, Sugarfoot Bonner up to cats like Eric Gales, Prince, etc...( Not to mention Hendrix, the Inventor of Acid Rock for the most part).....Stevie Ray Vaughn " Worshipped" Albert King & Hendrix (he said so in an interview & if you listen to his records it's obvious..)...Rock is Music-Don't matter who plays it.
@albertocmacarini Dude....that is bullshit.lol Iommi invented metal. That in itself is more imporant and impressive than anything Reid has done. And he can improvise like no ones business and is a riff machine. Brian May, have you ever listened to the 3-part guitar harmonies in Queen? His melodic sense is at classical level, genius in fact. Reid's is not. Page is arguably the the most versatile guitarist of all time, and has written probably the most memorable and important riffs in history.
@albertocmacarini Because if you want to go by technical ability alone then Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen(yes EVH is faster) Zakk Wylde, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman and a thousand others would beat Reid pretty brutally. Reid is very underrated, I give you that. and he's a damn amazing player. But you can't judge on tech ability alone. You have to count innovation, creativity, versatility, and the importance and impact of one's riffs and music
@TheConstruct That is true.lol I love Steve Howe. But I was going by players within the hard rock and heavy metal genre that was the whole comparison. cause if you wanted to go outside the genre tons of guys deystroy rock players in general. Django Reihardt, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Al Di Meola, etc.
@puddles1991 i think its funny how youre actually stupid enough to say my comment is stupid without any facts or support....which i gave plenty of if you read. it doesnt take a genius to know that Steve Howe and Marty Friedman are better players than Reid. Again, he's a great player. But if you're going to call me out, at least have some facts at hand friend. And btw, the first person to start name calling without a legitimate argument is the 'official' idiot.
@codebabe You didn't bring any 'facts', moron. You named a bunch of guitarists that YOU LIKE BETTER. It is purely subjective. Trying to say "x is technically better than y" without any actual way to quantify it is idiotic.
By the way: Rolling Stone disagree with you on over half the guitarists you named, but guess what? That's all just rock writers opinions as well.
What you are doing is telling anyone who likes Vernon Reid better than those you listed that their opinions are wrong. Idiot.
@puddles1991 I said this; Iommi invented metal. That in itself is more imporant and impressive than anything Reid has done. And he can improvise like no ones business and is a riff machine. Brian May, have you ever listened to the 3-part harmonies in Queen? His melodic sense is at classical level. Reid's is not. Page is arguably one of the the more versatile guitarist of all time, and has written probably the most memorable and important riffs in history.....THESE AREN'T FACTS????
@codebabe About May's so-called by you '3 part harmonies'. You do realize that was all an effect that repeated what he played at 2 different octaves right?
@TheConstruct Most of the time it wasn't. In his brighton rock solo he has a delay for harmonies. but usually he didn't. listen to the songs White Queen, God Save the Queen, Dreamers Ball, Procession, and most notably 'Good Company' where he has nearly a hundred guitar tracks playing counter-melodies to immitate the sound of a dixie-land jazz band, its beyond impressive. That is all painstaking over-dubbing. having to find the harmonies and counter melodies and lay them down track by track.
@TheConstruct Even with the delay effect youre talking about its not easy to create harmony. you have to make sure each not you play fits perfectly with the last note and make sure it lines up in rhythm. he doesn't use an automatic harmonizer. his pedal just repeats the notes you play. its up to the player to make sure the intervals in each run align with the last. youre making it sound simpler than it is. it isn't.
@puddles1991 Vernon Ried did not invent a genre Like Iommi. He did not popularize a style like Van Halen, he cannot compose harmonies like May, He didn't write a shit ton of popular riffs and solos like page. Ried is a solid player. But all he really has on anyone is very fast alternate picking. his solos are great for what they are, but they aren't that memorable. i'm not being subjective, quite the opposite. Overall, Ried just isn't important enough of a player to compare him to those guys.
@puddles1991 i wasnt the pea brain who started calling people idiots over fucking guitar players.lol the jokes on you buster! it doesnt take a fucking theory major to see that Brian May is better than Reid. And btw I WAS NOT THE ONE WHO STARTED SAYING THIS GUITAR PLAYER IS BETTER THAN THAT ONE. That started long before I got on this page. btw, van halen not knowing how to read doesn't mean shit. he was inventive as hell and helped give birth to a new subgenre(shred). its very impressive feat.
@JonnyLikesPie LMAO! That's funny. And yes, this is one of the best live performances I've ever seen. I wish i could have seen them live back when they were young and still had their youthful energy.
I have to comment on this video one more time.....performance. perfect. Musicianship, Top tier in any era, including now. Lyrics, timely and cogent for that time, the G.W. Bush era and especially now. The vocals...Great!!! They came so hard the whole band shouid have been arrested for kicking ass like that on national T.V. in every phase of the performance. What is up with so many people in the audience just not getting it? Typical American audience...clueless!
Very cool song and very cool band, but what's wrong with the people in the audience, they look like douchebags... they're all sitting like nothing instead of enjoy the song...
@Mariano85LP If you remember when Arsenio had his show, he introduced a lot of acts that the rest of the country had never heard of. I bet the people in L.A. had never heard of LC. I guarantee they had heard of them after this show.
@336kgf dude, what's the name of their new CD. man, i'm getting goose bumps just listening to them again! had to come on another time and see the shredding and vocals sound better than some of the singers today. and the energy! gotta bottle some of that and throw away coffee. lol their flying high with rock!!
I'm also thinking Arsenio must have had some security around for all those people to just be sitting still in their seats. I wouldn't have been able to.
Probably the most under-rated band and under-rated song in rock history. This song is beyond perfect -- amazing hook, riffs, groove, time signature changes, lyrics, etc. And if possible, the live version may be even better than the album. Amazing guitar solo at about 2:50.
They're still active: according to Wikipedia, "the band released their fifth studio album, The Chair in the Doorway, on September 15th, 2009 on Megaforce Records to generally positive reviews. The album sold approximatly 2800 copies in its first week and landed at No. 159 on the Billboard 200. This was the band's first album to chart since Stain in 1993. The band is currently touring the U.S and Europe in support of the record."
@scottallentvh you're god-damn right!...the problem, the follow-up single "Glamour Boys" straight up sucked...late 80's popular music was all about makin' the top 40, and when the made it with that GB debacle, unfortunately, they lost any kind of edge they had in the minds of anybody who dug "Cult of Personality"...damn shame...
@scottallentvh You're totally right although I think the song is a little overated for a Lviving Colour song, probably beacause of the appearence in GH3, so it's not their best song but it's totally awesome and the band is the greatest. And I too think that this live version is better than the studio, at least the original studio version.
@scottallentvh Agree - I remember when they came out. I bought the album straight away. Still magic to this day and live, well make your own judgement, but they are are without doubt sensational. These boys did not get their due. Clever lyrics to boot and the words still ring true today. I'm rambling In know, but this would rank in my top ten tunes of all time. Kudos Living Colour folk will be listening and discovering the magic of your music for generations to come - word and peace.
Oh my, this is one of the best songs I've heard. Not sure who wrote these lyrics but they are so true and incredibly beautiful. What an amazing performance -it must have been such a great experience to be there and feel that love and energy. Corey's voice is so powerful, Skillings is just the coolest guy and a superb bass player, definately one of the best, Vernon so passionate, creative, and strong, and of course Calhoun is so solid and soulful.
I just checked the card on my cassette tape copy (how 80s is that??) of "Vivid" and it was written by "V. Reid, C. Glover, W. Calhoun, M. Skillings." In other words, all the cats in the band had their hands in this tune, which is probably why--after 20 years--it STILL KICKS ASS!!
That's what I loved about the Arsenio Hall show... He brought on artists (Living Colour, Eric Gales, etc...) that would not normally see on the TV.... I miss that!!!
the fucking crowd is fucking scared....one of the best bands...

Corey must have an amazing voice or he wouldn't have toured in Godspell. Vernon Reid is better than Eddie Van Halen if you ask me. WOW.

@336kgf dude, what's the name of their new CD. man, i'm getting goose bumps just listening to them again! had to come on another time and see the shredding and vocals sound better than some of the singers today. and the energy! gotta bottle some of that and throw away coffee. lol their flying high with rock!!
syfywashere 2 years ago
It's called The Chair in the Doorway. The cover is a TV test pattern with an outline of someone sitting in an easy chair facing it.

the singer is so powerful. . . . . mosh pit?
(refering to scottallentvh's comment)
JuggaloLongboarder 2 years ago
I'm also thinking Arsenio must have had some security around for all those people to just be sitting still in their seats. I wouldn't have been able to.
Mosh pit, anyone?

Probably the most under-rated band and under-rated song in rock history. This song is beyond perfect -- amazing hook, riffs, groove, time signature changes, lyrics, etc. And if possible, the live version may be even better than the album. Amazing guitar solo at about 2:50.
What's my favorite color? Living Colour

Hallelujah, the '80s aren't dead after all.

I have their new album. It's actually very good. I've been into LC since they were first on MTV back around '88 I think. All hail Vernon!

@scottallentvh Their new CD rules.

@scottallentvh you're god-damn right!...the problem, the follow-up single "Glamour Boys" straight up sucked...late 80's popular music was all about makin' the top 40, and when the made it with that GB debacle, unfortunately, they lost any kind of edge they had in the minds of anybody who dug "Cult of Personality"...damn shame...
jawa423368 1 year ago

The note density on Vernon's solo has to be something unreal...I know he's not the best guitar player in the world but that solo is something fierce.

TheGlamourboy 2 years ago
I just checked the card on my cassette tape copy (how 80s is that??) of "Vivid" and it was written by "V. Reid, C. Glover, W. Calhoun, M. Skillings." In other words, all the cats in the band had their hands in this tune, which is probably why--after 20 years--it STILL KICKS ASS!!
Farricelli 2 years ago 9
YOU HAVE IT ON TAPE? Dude...that rocks.
336kgf 2 years ago 2
That's what I loved about the Arsenio Hall show... He brought on artists (Living Colour, Eric Gales, etc...) that would not normally see on the TV.... I miss that!!!
Thanks Arsenio...
