To be honest. Zhuge Liang's northern expedition was doomed to fail from the beginning. Shu is full of mountainous terrans which is easy to fend off intruders but also hard to attack + transport rations / supplies from. Sima Yi knew that and simply avoided battles until Shu's rations dried out.. If Shu didn't lose Jing Zhou to Wu they would've had an easier path to attack Wei.

Govern those 2 cities must be defensive oriented. when he tried to invade wei, the balance of the 3 position was damaged. Wu would not take a chance to invade wei because wei had the largest resources, armies, etc.Wu needed Shu because just as much Shu needed Wu. If i were Liu Bei, i would have put Zhao yun in charge of Xiang yang and Jiang ling. He reads the situation better than guan yu and always followed order of zhuge liang.

15 years, 9 expeditions and he couldn't take a single town. It wasn't just the eunuch Huang Hao that disliked him. Even noted heroes like Zhuge Zhan and the entire Yizhou gentry were against his wars which exhausted Shu so much.

You can't argue history like that. if, if, if. What if Guo Jia didn't die early and Cao Cao won Red Cliffs? What if Lu Su was never found by Sun Quan and there was no alliance and Liu Bei fled to the Jiao province (as he wanted to do) and died in obscurity?

If you look at it in a balanced manner you'll see what a miracle it is Shu lasted as long as it did, or for that matter, even existed.

Also it's highly doubtful Liu Bei had 200,000 troops at Xiaoting. Cos the Yi Province could only support about 100,000 at most.

I kind of agree with your other points but I don't think any of them, or even all of them put together, could have helped Shu win. The odds just weren't in their favour. (Okay aside from Guan Yu dying, not so much Guan Yu dying but Guan Yu losing Jing, that was the point of no return for Shu's ambition of conquest)

I disagree on your statement.Zhuge Liang was long admire by Chinese,even centuries before the "Romance of Three Kingdom" was written.

Du Fu,a reknown Chinese Tang Dynasty poet,praise Zhuge Laing in his poem.Yue Fei,a well-known Chinese Song Dynasty general also did the same thing.I'm pretty sure these guys was not influenced by "Romance of The Three Kingdom" which was written in Ming Dynasty.

They admire him for what he did to the state of Shu,holding it together for years.

You are right. Zhuge Liang in real history is not like in the novel. But you don't understand why Chinese are still proud of such a half fictional figure. Chinese are proud of him because the novel has long become part of Chinese culture. Zhuge Liang's spirit represents the spirit that Chinese cherish. Similarly, Cao Cao, Guan Yu and so on, they all represent something chinese admire or dislike.

Apart from a few absolute fabrications (The Peach Garden Oath, Zhang Yide whipping the government inspector when it was in fact Xuande and so on) the SGYY is an extrapolated version of the the SGZ: this extrapolation gives a cultural context to what is ultimately a VERY dry list of events. The SGZ is virtually unreadable.
