I bought the dvd. 1000 pesos at university in Colombia. thats like... less than a dolar. Anyway those sensations that this master piece brigns to life are priceless
To all Michael Nyman fans: You MUST watch the video of "Let There Be Light "... it's a song by MICHAEL NYMAN with rock noir band BELLADONNA and it's based on his music from "The Piano". Nyman himself plays piano on it... search for "nyman belladonna" here on youtube and you'll find it!! :-)
anyone know where i can find a clip from this films online, showing the scene with "we are such stuff as dreams are made on...." if you have a copy, please upload. thanks!
Yeah, I just got a thing from whalesinger who says it is available from Japan ... but be prepared to shell out $70 + (plus handling) ... think I'll write to Santa (again) ... Thanks marzipanfuntime
@PsyVoltage Thanks - however I have a slow broadband connection and old PC, hence I'd prefer to find and purchase a reputable copy. 'Free films' is a fine ideal - but what happens to the companies and people who make these 'free' films ...
@knuckey63 Unless something has changed, the DVDs currently available are DVD-Rs badly copied from the VHS release. This needs to be remastered for DVD, something that is unfortunately unlikely because of the technical difficulty of the source material (and because it's full of nudity that offends the prudish).
I could see Mickey Rourke walking through this scene in one of his avant garde get ups. Mickey has a pair of molten red shoes he wears with his threads...no socks. Serious searsucker saturday afternoon ensemble.
This and the Pillow Book may be the only Greenaway movies that have a real message beyond "People suck, and artists are superior." Seeing this clip, a viewer could actually think that he actually BELIEVES hope and kindness have value, which is not the impression his other movies give (and I've seen all of them, and LOVE Draughtsman's Contract and Cook, Thief, et al....)Thanks for posting, wish we were friends and could meet over a good meal to discuss all of the Greenaway oeuvre!
same here...love it...a totally transportive experience...you dont watch it....you put your critical mind on hold and just emerse yourself in this film.
This is one of the best films of all time... until the last third. I would argue the film slowly collapses in on itself, and indeed, grinds to a halt.
Of course, the play does too, as it was originally meant to be performed at a wedding banquet.
I remember seeing it at the cinema, and being being stunned by its opulence, and Gielgud's breathtaking performance ... and also concluding that Peter Greenaway was as mad as a fuckin' balloon. Those collars! Those hats!
I loved this adaptation, even if it felt a bit pretentious :L

A ruff to end all ruffs. No wonder he was separated from the others, flew off like a flying squirrel with that thing.

How good is the that version? Reading the reviews, the quality seems to be pretty bad.

@knuckey63 Thanks but I already returned 2 unwatchable (quality wise) copies from 'reputable' eBay vendors, still waiting for those pesky refunds.
