i get sad whenever i see irene cara. sure a lot of people get pimped in hollywood and especially in the music business, but irene really didn't get to enjoy the fruit of her labors. fame and flashdance were both oscar winning songs which made millions of dollars. still, irene cara never got to participate in the millions. i think this disrespect demoralized her, but it didn't destroy her eternal talent. she is still beautiful and i love her with all my heart.
I'll put it this way, Pet Clark's version was pleasant fluff, and there's even a Frank Sinatra cover of Downtown on youtube-- at least there used to be-- and he made fun of it. This version, like a lot of other things, glamorizes poverty, not an uncommon concept in the entertainment world. Although one of the goals of being a successful entertainer is to escape poverty. That said, I prefer the former, although it is a case of apples v. oranges, there's no point trying to compare.
I LOVE this version of the alread cool song by Petula Clarke. Wow, this sounds really great, I LOVE IT, Love Irene, always have. I wonder If I can get this album?
She sounds great, but I'd rather her her sing it with the original sound. The r&b version really do it for me. It's doesn't even work for the film. The music does, but not the song.
A MISFIRE! Cara still sounds great...she needs her own songs. The idea of recording "Downtown" as a hip-hoppish jam must have been conceived during a heroin withdrawl....(puke)
@burnley5960 Boring. I like this version much better-"funkier groove" Clarks version is like "hospital food" THIS version is like the "seasoning" put on it!
@burnley5960 No match for Petula Clark?...ok. I'm sorry what kinds of meds are you on, cause If it's Prozac I suggest you break em in half LOL!! No seriously no disrespect to Mrs. Clark; I remember falling in love with the original when watching one of my fav movies "Girl Interrupted" so I feel ya, However, I just love the way they did this and it's not necessarity "better" just "different" One is hospital food, the other is the seasoning you put on the food; so you need BOTH for it to work.
@burnley5960 But they "fliped it" and made it into one, You may not know about this sort of thing where you come from, but with American music see, we can do this and it's often better than the original, it's just that people get angry when you "bother" the original because for some reason they don't want any one esp black to put a funky vibe on it, but Oh well...The song is a nice alternative version to the original like it or not. That's how we do it baby, now enjoy it or go to another site
@burnley5960 Whoever owns the rights and I doubt it's the singer (it hardly ever is) gave Cara permission to do the song...Could it have been Tony Hatch? hmm maybe, and if so it's making him some money sooo who cares. Wer'e not seeing any of it to to become so ingrossed in this discussion that it's really becoming an issue is it; cause that would be a little pathetic don't ya think?...It's just a fucking song (and I say that with all due respect)
@atlasshrugged2u No I don't get angry when a cover is good IE The Searchers with Jackie DeShannons Numbers as for Black or white not the point at all,in the UK we don't give a shite about the colour of the skin and when you can learn to speak ENGLISH then I may listen to you PS 1960s Music is just that It does not need a "Funky vibe" and as for black and white Sam Cooke yes a Black man was just about the best voice I have ever had the pleasure to listen to
@burnley5960 ME learn to speak english...Ok and I believe your accent and the way you talk is "maybe" a step above "Cockney" is it? right. (I know your'e not from England) Uhm ok well I guess there's nothing left to talk about; Iv'e never had an argument over a song before...Politics, Religion, Racism, never a song that's a new one... Hey no hard feelings mate It's just a difference of opinion which is totally ok to have. Oh and you are soo right about Sam Cooke, love him too :)
i love irene cara but i dont like this song as much what a feeling flash dance but i still like this song its a version from the 1950's downtown song my friend's sister is in this video the little black girl
Well done! This slick, very soulful, jazzy update just proves Irene Cara is still hot after all these years!!! What joy she brings all of us. I've missed her so much. Hope she won't stay away so long again. Thanks for posting this vid.
Nice version of this song! She put it into the Jazzy world nor Bosa Nova type. If you will listen to this song at the River Bank, watching the moon shines bright, it will bring you to another world. Perfect! Nice Irene...
I have been a big fan of hers since 1983 and have admired her so much. I am so glad she is still going. One of the many great talents out there who can't get a good break in today's so called "pop" music. What a shame! Lot's of love to you Irene as always! And I will always having a great time with you in New Port Richey!
Now that is what you call a cover version. Where a singer can take an old song and make it into their own. Not just sing over the original tune. The video itself makes a lot of sense. And as singers go, Irene Cara gives a lot of the talentless chart toppers a lot to think about.
If you actually read my comment properly and not jump to the wrong conclusion, you will in fact see that many cover versions are just mere copies of the originals.
Where you came up with the idea that I meant that the Petula Clark version was a flop is beyond me. Read the comment again and let those words of mine sink in properly!
its very intresting how they put Petula Clark's Downtown to a movie about people who are on the street and entangled with a social worker...very intresting, but Irene Cara's version is alittle too slow for my taste but its ok.
C.J. is the guy that's rapping, I saw him on "Dance Revolution". He is soooo cute! Is this gonna be shown on any of the video channels? Like, MTV, VH1 or BET???? It's Great!!!
My bad ... I thought this was a cover of the Petula Clark classic.

interesting, not really into the rap portion in the middle, but i do enjoy hearing old songs done in new ways.
this was much sadder and grittier than the up beat pet clark original, which i still love.

wat do u mean the original version song was a flop because petula clark had sung this and it became #1 2 weeks in a row in 1965
