I first saw this on Top of the Pops in the late sixties. What a brilliant song! Still as good after 40 years. Prob my favourite Beach Boys song but then - there are so many...
This is a really cool song - even though it reminds me of all the ass-licking racists and "royalty ass-suckers" on the faculty and student body body of Carson High School, Carson, CA, Class of '71...I STILL DIG THIS TUNE!
So many Beach Boys tracks were classics of their era. Not being too nostalgic, and it seems as if in hindsight I'd be paying them too much of a compliment, but these guys really pushed the boundaries in their field. Technically, they were right there. They were 8 tracking when eveyone else was doing 4, and so n. And pushing stereo into new areas. Very great respect for them, and especially the sublime songs of Brian at his peak. But the others were entirely capable too. Never forget.

Janice W, if you're out there, do you remember when I wrote the words of this song down on a piece of paper and handed it to you in 12 th grade science class. You were impressed that I knew all the words to this song.
thanks!! i'm 57 years old and remember when this first came out! volkswagon beetle with an a/m radio blaring on the L.A. freeway system!!! wonderful :)
@MsSpawn1234 well dear I'm 58 and my recollection is similar except I was on the Belt Parkway going from Brooklyn to Jones Beach listening on the radio tuned in a Dodge Dart. Its all good when we're talking about America's band !
Play this in the car, on a bright warm summer's day, with all the windows and roof open [or the top down if you have the right vehicle] and I guarantee it'll put the biggest smile on your face. The epitome of a pop tune. Of course, like every Beach Boys song, it's too short.
TWO OF MY FAVORITE BEACHBOY SONGS"DARLIN and BREAKAWAY"..THEIR MUSIC IS AGELESS..I CAN REMEMBER AS A TEENAGER HEARING "IN MY ROOM" AND CRYING MY EYES OUT BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONLY PLACE I COULD GO TO HIDE FROM THE WORLD OUTSIDE THAT A TEENAGE BOY DIDN,T UNDERSTAND..THANK YOU BEACHBOYS XOXO BG..
Here's a song i wrote for BBs but they didnt make use of: "Blonde chcik calls me Black man, Black chick calls me White/ if some guy calls me Yellow man, dont mean he gotta fight/ I got all them colors in me, baby, all them colors true
Thank-you for your responses everyone! Good times! I hold these songs sacred! Lost a brother in Viet nam in 68! I love these songs, and cry everytime I hear them, for so many brothers who are gone now! Was a good time to be alive! I'm sure you may have your own expiriences! Thank-you!
one of their last truely great songs! Its sad to think they were all finished by the late 60's but there aren't many bands out there with a collection of songs as great as theirs. One of the most original and best sounding groups ever. Their music will still be played in a thousand years!
Brian intended for this song (along with Time to Get Alone) to go to Redwood (Three Dog Night) but the other Beach Boys bullied him into giving both songs to them, and they wiped Redwoods vocals, replacing the vocals with their own.
This song reminds me of the time yrs ago when I attended a fashionable cocktail party in NY when I overheard a European woman ask a well-known woman politician "Do you know about EJ's poem?" The politico replied: "who's EJ?" The Euro said: "Why you silly baboon! I am wasting my time." The politico said :"If'n I warn't a lady, I'd slap yer skinny blonde face into next week!" At this point, I intervened, saying "Please, ladies." The Euro : "I see you brought your cab-driver along as your escort. "
je craque sur ce morceau qui me donne le frisson et de découvrir the beach boys a quarante quatre ans mieux vaut tard que jamais ... sublime mélodie et le travail des voix la classe pour mes oreilles .
@grantswede Do you know for certain that it's Carl singing this one? I know they're brothers and sound similar but I would love to know for sure which one sings this song as it's my favourite BBs song.
@gerkins1 Let me guess....Switzerland? You're not a Swede. And, that's not German. I'm an American Swede. That is some kind of Scanda-speech....what is it?
@Ulmanor Ah... I thought it was Dutch, though Afrikaans is descended from Dutch, and Afrikaans also is the only Germanic language that DIDN'T develop primarily in Europe...
We really should celebrate this period of time as a zenith of musicality & songwriting especially from Americas west coast - wonderful legacy that has been left to cherish - peace.
While "Wild Honey" wasn't as interesting as Pet Sounds or the Smile stuff it was, as allmusic said, a return to the boys acting more like a "group" again, and IMO, they were all the better for it. As long as they still had Brian producing and making these great arrangements and harmonies they could never fail in my eyes.
@TheRalphMouth-you are exactly right the world has changed and it is fucked and screwed no one can produce something like this today, I wish I had a hot tub machine so I could go back in time and forget about how dumbfounded this world is now
Personal opinion, but their best or one of the top 3 ever. Saw them several times at Poplar Creek in NW Chicago several times and they are always great.
The Wild Honey album was grossly underrated. Darling and Wild Honey both stand the test of time. It is said that Brian Wilson never forgets a musical idea. This song is proof of that.
@62klang The Beach Boys like the Beatles and British Groups in the advent of their Invasion were way ahead of their time when they put songs out. It's impossible and just totally ignorant of music to say someone else's version is superior.
This is a really, really great track. I always liked the lyric "doggone out of sight". Has anybody ever used the word Doggone since? I think we're overdue for it.
@deweypug Nah, Brian wrote it... In 1963. Can you believe that? Just like Back Home, it should've been on one of the albums of the period... Then again, it probably wouldn't have sounded the same. Who knows?
@tehmaster690 Good call, I did some research and see it was originally written as 'Thinkin' bout you baby' and never recorded by the Beach Boys until it was re-written as Darlin' ... so ahead of it's time!
Late Fall, 1967?......spiced-up my Fr. Year at BC......taking very good notes, and unaware a lady featured in a 1965 Seventeen Magazine would one day be in the front row of class.....and we'd become friends for a LONG time!!

@relimes No, he hasn't played with them since 1995. He still owns one-fifth of Brother Records (BRI) which licenses the group. At this point, Brian has no interest in The Beach Boys, just his own legacy. Bruce joined the band in 1965, and Brian was very much with the group then, he just wasn't touring anymore.
@TheBeachboys4ever To clarify, The Beach Boys broke up shorty after Carl's death in 1998. Mike Love currently has the rights to use the name The Beach Boys.
@KajZu2 The honky-tonk piano is playing the same note as the fender bass giving this effect. Brian Wilson always experimented blending two or more instruments to make a new sound.
Brilliant. A unique blend of honky tonk piano, brass, harmony backing vocals and Carl's kick ass rock/soul lead. Really different and inventive. What a band! One of my favourite 60's records.*****

Was this after Brian left the band and Bruce joined?

@relimes Bruce was with the band, but Brian never left. He just stopped touring.
