  • I first saw this on Top of the Pops in the late sixties. What a brilliant song! Still as good after 40 years. Prob my favourite Beach Boys song but then - there are so many...

  • I was living like half a man then I couldn't love but now I can. My fave line.

  • the Wild Honey album was my introduction to the Beach Boys music beyond the surfer tunes

  • My favorite song in the world, probably.

  • @DameDisco78 ----------And not a bad choice either....

  • Back when life was sweet and innocent, before rap crap came along and wrecked eveything.

  • Seldom heard, but always sounding great!

  • Almost 45 years later and it sounds fresh and awesome - that is the genius of Brian Wilson.

  • any vehicle is the right one on a summer's day with this track turned up!!!!

  • I was living half until I heard this....now I'm whole, baby....!!!!

  • Wild honey n' Pets Sounds are the best Albums of Beach boys.

  • THIS SHIT IS SO INTENSE!!

  • No No---my boyhood idols JAN AND DEAN

  • This is a really cool song - even though it reminds me of all the ass-licking racists and "royalty ass-suckers" on the faculty and student body body of Carson High School, Carson, CA, Class of '71...I STILL DIG THIS TUNE!

  • lsd drugs equals carl

  • kathryn! Look through the wonderfull collection on youtube and find your answere!

I usually visit these sights a couple times a month! I will never stop finding my favorites! May I send you one?

  • So many Beach Boys tracks were classics of their era. Not being too nostalgic, and it seems as if in hindsight I'd be paying them too much of a compliment, but these guys really pushed the boundaries in their field. Technically, they were right there. They were 8 tracking when eveyone else was doing 4, and so n. And pushing stereo into new areas. Very great respect for them, and especially the sublime songs of Brian at his peak. But the others were entirely capable too. Never forget.

  • i feel bad listening to them without brian tho

  • Lovely song - but what is the point of saying you don't like it? There is no point! If you don't like it, go away.

  • Janice W, if you're out there, do you remember when I wrote the words of this song down on a piece of paper and handed it to you in 12 th grade science class. You were impressed that I knew all the words to this song.

  • @BeachBoysJanDean1 yes i do i do :)

  • @Crazycupmuffin Groovy! Those sure were good times! ( I know you're not really Janice, but nice try :)

  • @BeachBoysJanDean1 drat what gave it away was it the beard or the wig?

  • @Crazycupmuffin Neither. Janice had both a beard and a wig. It was your heighth. You are a good two inches taller!

  • @BeachBoysJanDean1 does the Jan stand for janice in ur name?

  • Gorgeous song, love it to bits.

  • Back then it wasn't the battle of the bands - it was the battle of the surfers and ho-dads!!!

  • If you remember the rivalry between the "Surfers" and "Ho-Dads" when the Beach Boys were THE BAND, you must be from L.A. or So. Calif. : )

  • there will never be another band that captures that southern California summetime feeling like the Beach Boys

  • this song totally kicks ass....

  • 5 people never had someone that they could call "Darlin"!

  • classic!!! the voice!!! the band...the whole package!!!!

  • ONE of my favorites...hardly heard this one on the radio...dont know why!!!

  • What a great melody. Thanks Carl....RIP

  • i love thebeach boys they are awesome.Carl had a voice of an angle and it was so sad when he passed away.

  • thanks!! i'm 57 years old and remember when this first came out! volkswagon beetle with an a/m radio blaring on the L.A. freeway system!!! wonderful :)

  • @MsSpawn1234 well dear I'm 58 and my recollection is similar except I was on the Belt Parkway going from Brooklyn to Jones Beach listening on the radio tuned in a Dodge Dart. Its all good when we're talking about America's band !

  • @MsSpawn1234 I envy your youth. To be driving in a VW Beetle on the L.A. Freeway in 1967. Wow. Are you still in L.A. now?

  • Daft Punk = Darlin : D

  • What a voice. Could listen to him 24-7

  • Dog gone outta site indeed!

  • "Darlin" was performed By Mentel Health way back In 1971

  • wonderful melody!! Thanks to the beach boys from Japan.

  • The live version of this song takes me right back to a BB concert right after high school. GREAT memories...

  • Oh, I wish I was a kid again! And, I agree with grantswede - "Outta site"!!! =)

  • Play this in the car, on a bright warm summer's day, with all the windows and roof open [or the top down if you have the right vehicle] and I guarantee it'll put the biggest smile on your face. The epitome of a pop tune. Of course, like every Beach Boys song, it's too short.

  • God damn this song is fantastic:)

  • rip Carl..love your guitar work and your singing is awesome..miss you

  • im 16 and im finding this song for the first time, and i love it :D

there's still hope for my generation everyone!

  • wow, Carl just tears shit up

  • TWO OF MY FAVORITE BEACHBOY SONGS"DARLIN and BREAKAWAY"..THEIR MUSIC IS AGELESS..I CAN REMEMBER AS A TEENAGER HEARING "IN MY ROOM" AND CRYING MY EYES OUT BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONLY PLACE I COULD GO TO HIDE FROM THE WORLD OUTSIDE THAT A TEENAGE BOY DIDN,T UNDERSTAND..THANK YOU BEACHBOYS XOXO BG..

  • Best Beach Boys song ever. End of story.

  • @officialmidnightdj Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt:)

  • Here's a song i wrote for BBs but they didnt make use of: "Blonde chcik calls me Black man, Black chick calls me White/ if some guy calls me Yellow man, dont mean he gotta fight/ I got all them colors in me, baby, all them colors true

  • Thank-you for your responses everyone! Good times! I hold these songs sacred! Lost a brother in Viet nam in 68! I love these songs, and cry everytime I hear them, for so many brothers who are gone now! Was a good time to be alive! I'm sure you may have your own expiriences! Thank-you!

  • Its BACK, Booyah!!!!!!! Thank you Jesus.....

  • i'll hold you in my heart as lifes most precious part......fucking classic superb beach boys lyrics

  • My favorite Beach Boys song. Ah, I can't stop listening! 2 minutes and 15 seconds is way too short!

  • FYI...the stained glass window was in Brian's front door,,,I helped make the damn thing

  • Carl wrote the nmational anthem of China, called "Ching Chu-kuo" Not mant people know thuis

  • @BrokenneckYgor Nice joke

  • The first record I ever bought and I still love it!!

  • one of their last truely great songs! Its sad to think they were all finished by the late 60's but there aren't many bands out there with a collection of songs as great as theirs. One of the most original and best sounding groups ever. Their music will still be played in a thousand years!

  • We use to think the name of this song was "Your Precious Love".

  • a great song by the best band ever!

  • favorite song in the whole wide world

  • Alixx2,excellent sound,,,,, I thank you.

  • WOW...thanks for posting...love this song and never knew Beach Boys sang it :) just stumbled upon it looking for their songs!

  • more soul than i ever had

  • is it true carl reached the high notes because of an unnatural act?

  • Brian intended for this song (along with Time to Get Alone) to go to Redwood (Three Dog Night) but the other Beach Boys bullied him into giving both songs to them, and they wiped Redwoods vocals, replacing the vocals with their own.

  • @peteworst I'm glad this went to the BBoys, Carls voice is so unique!!! Wish he sang every song!

  • @peteworst wow no way

  • @peteworst three dog night <3 haha

  • This is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. I believe I was 13 when it came out. And I loved it since then!

  • This song reminds me of the time yrs ago when I attended a fashionable cocktail party in NY when I overheard a European woman ask a well-known woman politician "Do you know about EJ's poem?" The politico replied: "who's EJ?" The Euro said: "Why you silly baboon! I am wasting my time." The politico said :"If'n I warn't a lady, I'd slap yer skinny blonde face into next week!" At this point, I intervened, saying "Please, ladies." The Euro : "I see you brought your cab-driver along as your escort. "

  • the greatest chicago song never made

  • Daft Punk named their first band on this song because they loved the band so much.

  • This is, in my opinion, the very best song The Beach Boys ever recorded, and that's saying something because I liked a lot of their songs.

  • @vandywilliam Exactly; its weird cos it doesnt sound like the BB usual songs does it? Its more Motown than Surf City;)

  • Por favor alguem poderia me indicar uma maneira de baixar esta musica. nao sou tao boa com internet. e nao achei no 4shared. Valeu.

  • All of the guys in the Beach boys had great voices but Carl was the best in my opinion, evidence is here in this song.

  • WOW....I just love this song....brilliant !!!!!!

  • Until VERY recently, I thought the chorus was "Oh, darlin' I think about you off in my pretty bald head". :-)

  • @shmuli9 Lol Are the real lyrics '' Oh, darlin' I dream about you often like pretty all day '' ? It's hard to totally get ;)

  • @pablogeebee1 Something like that, yes. (You can find the exact lyrics if you tpe in "darling lyrics" on your favorite web browser.)

  • @shmuli9

Oh Darlin I dream about you often my pretty darlin

I love the way you soften my life with your love, your precious love Oh!

  • It's all to much for me to see, A love that's shining all around here, The more I am, the less I know: watch?v=akTM4CiKMcA

  • takes me back to the juke box in the Aloha coffe bar in frith street soho c.1959. Great memories

  • I love this song

  • je craque sur ce morceau qui me donne le frisson et de découvrir the beach boys a quarante quatre ans mieux vaut tard que jamais ... sublime mélodie et le travail des voix la classe pour mes oreilles .

  • Gosh! Carl's voice of the 60's! So very outta-site! Oh gosh! Good times!

  • @grantswede OHHHH yeah!

  • @grantswede Do you know for certain that it's Carl singing this one? I know they're brothers and sound similar but I would love to know for sure which one sings this song as it's my favourite BBs song.

  • Ek was die lewe soos die helfte van 'n man

Dan kan ek nie liefde nie, maar nou kan ek

Jy pick me up wanneer ek voel hartseer

Meer siel as wat ek ooit gehad

Gonna is lief vir jou elke enkele nag

Want ek dink jy is te outta oë

  • @gerkins1 Let me guess....Switzerland? You're not a Swede. And, that's not German. I'm an American Swede. That is some kind of Scanda-speech....what is it?

  • @wilswasit104

Google Translate reveals that it's Afrikaans. It's the second verse.

  • @Ulmanor Ah... I thought it was Dutch, though Afrikaans is descended from Dutch, and Afrikaans also is the only Germanic language that DIDN'T develop primarily in Europe...

  • this is my absolute fave beach boys song

its just such a happy upbeat song

  • @sugarnads That piano is just great.

  • i always thought this was the Turtles, lol

  • @mrhayz600 Loved the Turtles!

  • A Beach Boys classic.

    Love it.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Rap and Hip Hop = NO MELODY!

  • The guys are on a roll with this fantastic song. Similar to The Beatles and Back In The USSR.

  • This song inspired daft punk.

  • We really should celebrate this period of time as a zenith of musicality & songwriting especially from Americas west coast - wonderful legacy that has been left to cherish - peace.

  • Another great "Feel good" song from the masters!!!!!!!!!

  • Lyrics and melody are great..is my favorite Beach Boys song. It takes me back to better times and better music. Love the 60's - 80's!

  • I just loooove this song

  • I miss Carl he was the sweetest Beach Boy.

  • While "Wild Honey" wasn't as interesting as Pet Sounds or the Smile stuff it was, as allmusic said, a return to the boys acting more like a "group" again, and IMO, they were all the better for it. As long as they still had Brian producing and making these great arrangements and harmonies they could never fail in my eyes.

  • Probably my favorite Beach Boy song. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are really sweet.

  • this song is so fine!!!!! Yeah, baby!!!!

  • I would play this on my 8 track, every time I would run the quarter mile, in My Mustang, at Atco Dragway in South Jersey! Amazing Times!

  • @TheRalphMouth-you are exactly right the world has changed and it is fucked and screwed no one can produce something like this today, I wish I had a hot tub machine so I could go back in time and forget about how dumbfounded this world is now

  • Personal opinion, but their best or one of the top 3 ever. Saw them several times at Poplar Creek in NW Chicago several times and they are always great.

  • Carl's lead in this is wonderful. God that guy had a voice!

  • @Karateworm His voice was merely a reflection of his marvelous kindness and soul. I doubt the world has seen a better man. Ask Brian.

  • The Wild Honey album was grossly underrated. Darling and Wild Honey both stand the test of time. It is said that Brian Wilson never forgets a musical idea. This song is proof of that.

  • Fucking blows my mind every time....

  • Prefer David Cassidy's version!

  • @62klang David Cassidy is one of the worst artists in UK, he distroyed this song. He was an awful teenage garbage :-(

  • @62klang The Beach Boys like the Beatles and British Groups in the advent of their Invasion were way ahead of their time when they put songs out. It's impossible and just totally ignorant of music to say someone else's version is superior.

  • @BBQFanNo1 I didn't say superior, it's a matter of taste and I am entitled to my opinion and I prefer David Cassidys version!

  • Prefer David Cassidy's version!

  • It is 1967 all over again. Kay W. where are you?

  • This is a really, really great track. I always liked the lyric "doggone out of sight". Has anybody ever used the word Doggone since? I think we're overdue for it.

  • I think Carl wrote and sang this one - sheer genius!!

  • @deweypug Nah, Brian wrote it... In 1963. Can you believe that? Just like Back Home, it should've been on one of the albums of the period... Then again, it probably wouldn't have sounded the same. Who knows?

  • @tehmaster690 Good call, I did some research and see it was originally written as 'Thinkin' bout you baby' and never recorded by the Beach Boys until it was re-written as Darlin' ... so ahead of it's time!

  • My favorite Beach Boys album. Not everyone's.

  • for me, this song and Breakaway are magical in a way no other BB songs are. How did they do it?

  • happy birthday brian wilson

  • i love this one. It always seems to have a slight "Elvis Costello" sound to it, but I think that's just me!

  • Late Fall, 1967?......spiced-up my Fr. Year at BC......taking very good notes, and unaware a lady featured in a 1965 Seventeen Magazine would one day be in the front row of class.....and we'd become friends for a LONG time!!

  • Carl sings soooooo good man! I love this song sooo much!

  • this shit is horse compared to what brian had in store for the band

  • @Brainkid88 horse shit*

  • Fantastic!

  • This song is a beast!

  • This is my favorite Beach Boys song, of all time!

  • @LisaCHenry1 and mine the best song they ever did by miles.

  • @danspurs27 ...I'M ROLLIN' WIT YA....I CAN REMEMBER LISTENING TO THIS ON THE RADIO IN MY BED ROOM....DANCIN' MY REAR END OFF....I JUST LOVE THIS SONG..IT IS THE BEST THAT THEY HAVE EVER PUT OUT...AND I'M A JAZZ NUT.............

  • I love this song, and he has the most beautiful voice. Remember when music was soooo good, like this?!

  • The tremendous lead vocals are proivded by Carl Wilson, RIP. Thanks, Carl for all the great memories.

  • wow,so fuckn good, words cant fulfill how good this song is!.............

  • daft punks band name before they were daft punk.

  • want this at my wedding...

  • Those lyrics are just INCREDIBLE.Thanks.

  • ''...soften my life with your love....''Thanks.

  • @jmtappenden

Pretty great line. Another one I like is from "If" by Bread:

"...and when my love for life is running dry, you come and pour yourself on me."

  • I Love this song!

  • I love the way you soften my life with your love....

  • classic. this is a great song.

  • Was this after Brian left the band and Bruce joined?

  • @relimes Bruce was with the band, but Brian never left. He just stopped touring.

  • @TheBeachboys4ever So techinally Brian is still with the band this day, since u said he never left?

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @relimes No, he hasn't played with them since 1995. He still owns one-fifth of Brother Records (BRI) which licenses the group. At this point, Brian has no interest in The Beach Boys, just his own legacy. Bruce joined the band in 1965, and Brian was very much with the group then, he just wasn't touring anymore.

  • @TheBeachboys4ever To clarify, The Beach Boys broke up shorty after Carl's death in 1998. Mike Love currently has the rights to use the name The Beach Boys.

  • This once made me into bass.. With my Rickie with sligt dist/chorus Bi-amp. is the closest I got, -but still far away from this,!!

  • @KajZu2 The honky-tonk piano is playing the same note as the fender bass giving this effect. Brian Wilson always experimented blending two or more instruments to make a new sound.

  • Brilliant. A unique blend of honky tonk piano, brass, harmony backing vocals and Carl's kick ass rock/soul lead. Really different and inventive. What a band! One of my favourite 60's records.*****

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!

  • Wooooot, god i love the sound

  • one of their best

  • I remember back in 11th grade Science class writing the words of this song down on a piece of paper and handing it to a cool girl who
