yes its true guys ... she was 18 years old in this movie and she was in a vacation in egypt and a friend asked her to be an extra and she said yes .... since that she fall in love in acting career
Fyi, and others viewing this, that isn't Cate. She describes her scene in the Egyptian film as an American cheerleader @ a boxing match with pompoms. Nowhere in that film is she @ a boxing match w/ pompoms.
what the hell was she doing in egypt, and why egyptian films as extra. how the hell she got to be an extra in forgein country????? lol
btw she is fucking lucky to be dancing to ahmed zaki song. no one can beat the king of cinema. he was very talented and the movie didn't suck, u have to watch it to understand it. its good a good film, and ahmed zaki was very talented actor. its better then any cheap american film for sure.
Thank you. That's a decent comment. If you want to know more about the Cate Blanchett story, you can simply Google Cate Blanchett Egypt or something like that. Cheers!
i did what u advised me to do and i still dont think cate blanchett is all that. i mean she is mad lucky to be near ahmed zaki, akhhh he was the best. Allah yirhama. Cate can act in zillion films she will never be as good as ahmed. for the people who say it must be embrassing for her to watch herself should shut up, cause this movie made her want to do acting. she should thank this movie.
I agree with you that Cate's fans and Cate herself should be grateful, but you should kindly refrain from using any condescending language. Thank you.
In this specific scene, we discover that yes the song could be meaningless but it had meaning with Hodhod sang it to his friends but not in this form of cheap entertainment which is like selling one's soul.
In the context of the film, the song "Azz Azz Kaboria" was a song that the character of Ahmed Zaki came up with. Hodod sings it in the beginning of the film to his friends. If you know about low-class Egyptians, you would know about the culture of meangingless absurd songs. The aristocrats/nouvew-riches get drawn to Hodhod and his pack. And they become entertainers for the rich.
Weird how great actors have humble, sometimes embarrassing debuts. I really pity Cate for acting in such an awful film. She's since more than redeemed herself with all the other films she'd done since (notably LOTR, Elizabeth and recently Benjamin Button)
How can you tell it's an awful film if you haven't seen in its entirety? I recommend you do because it's a beautiful social satire that showcases class struggles in Egypt during the early 90's.
The film looks awful. The camera work looks cheap. The film is called 'Crabs' for crying out loud! And it isn't like Egypt is known for its amazing movies anyway.
I haven't seen the film, but I have seen plenty of films that claim to be social dramas but are in fact nothing but bawdy and sappy movies. Cate Blanchett would probably me mortified if she saw this again, in the company of B-rate actors. And for good reason too.
It sounds like you have no knowledge of Egyptian cinema. And that make your opinion judgemental. I still suggest that you watch the film in its entirety before you start criticizing it.
I DO have knowledge of Egyptian cinema. Egyptian films tend to be dissapointing, boring and age terribly. The so-called 'social dramas' are pretentious in nature and they're nothing but trash for the masses. I have seen quite a few Ahmed Zaki films and they are consistently awful (with the exception of one or two which were bearable). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and perhaps this film is good. But judging from this scene and 'azz azz kaboria' I doubt this film will be any different.
for those saying it's not her, it's just a really awkward freeze frame. try to look at the same person while she's dancing down and at actually looks a lot like her.
She was very young back then. Research it. She was in Egypt. And she was staying at this hotel. And someone asked her if she would like to be an extra in a boxing film. And she agreed. And it was her first acting experience. She walked off the set and hated it because she waited and waited for hours doing nothing and the director ended up shouting at her. So she walked off the set and gave acting a chance. Became a superstar!

Fair enough. If you had good knowledge of Egyptian cinema, you would have known the filmmaker Khairy Beshara and his amazing output.
You have to understand that the film is a satire and that it has elements of the absurd reminiscent of Eugene Ionesco's work let's say.
