i came on here to see what all the fuss is about i saw a little of the Plumber Baby sketch on a TV countdown of the 100 scariest moments in TV and Film.....and i'm absolutely disgusted! I love a bit of dark humour. I tell jokes that make people cringe. nothing PC about me at all...but this?....comedy that is just plain spooky is not comedy.
Jam was a great show but I prefer Blue Jam,the radio show. The use of music was utterly sublime.See Rothko into Ray Of Light by Madonna for one example...
basically the writer of this show (chris morris) has been making pretty controversial and well known satirical shows in britain since the early 1990's. this show is taken from an old radio show he had and its sort of like some bizarre underground art piece that was barely recognised when it came out, weird late night telly stuff... i personally think its his magnum opus, amazing and dark
The baby plumber sketch is one of the high points of Jam - one of the places where beneath the 'dark humour' lies something profound.
The fragility of life and the tenacity of the human spirit which will cling onto it even at the cost of descending into madness.
I don't know - I worry that that sounds stupidly pretentious. But, as with many other Jam sketches, I have a feeling that it means more than just "ooh look how grotesque this is".
Beautiful sentiment that cuts right to the underbelly, AlephNeil. It's almost as if Morris is silently screaming,"Do you get it!".Love the gun idiot and his realisation!
@AlephNeil When you say the fragility of life and the tenacity of the human spirit which will cling onto even at the cost of descending into madness it reminds me of Mary Shelley's novel. Would you therefore consider this Chris Morris' 'Modern Day Prometheus'?
I never thought about it that way. But yes this could indeed be the best modern rendition of Frankenstein in a short ever...
@AlephNeil - dude I totally agree. It's not just trying to shock for shock value. Instead it's a way to highlight issues that we as either individuals or as a society have trouble dealing with. :)
Actually it was repeated once literally just before the DVD came out, although not in its original form - some of the sketches were featured in their remixed 'jaaaaam' form, and it was also these versions that appeared on the DVD.
Plumber baby makes me feel so uncomfortable in the core of my soul, that's no bad thing, just feelings you never thought you possessed tend to awaken when watching something like this.
That's the whole essence of it. It's about people losing their senses and thinking that their behaviour makes perfect sense. That's why it's funny and sad at the same time.

It was astonishing how they managed to catch the skewed weirdness of Blue Jam on video, I never thought they'd pull it off.
Absolutely the way I imagined the scenes while listening to the radio prog.

Her baby is dead, she is desperate. She offers the plumber a lot of money to do his best. Tempted by the money, he tries his best.
