I was not born until 1979, and when I watch speeches like this, I'm amazed at how brave and genuine leaders used to be. This speech (off the cuff) is simply beautiful. He takes this opportunity not to go for blood lust or anger, but instead manages to comfort and bring together everyone who saw it. I wish we could get back to a day when everything was more genuine and from the heart, instead of sanitized and run through a PR machine. Leaders feel like used car salesmen now.
I never realized MLKs most famous quotes were his last. Makes me weep with respect for their example. I wept with a hole in my heart. we no longer have people 'of faith' or with 'faith in our country' any more. to truly inspire above the noise, above the rhetoric which has grown to rob us of all our integrity and respect.
Obama needs our support to face similar hate/violent rhetoric. I stand behind him, ready to be involved in rebuilding our lives, country and planet; together is the only way.
A speech that seeks to elevate the understanding and challenges our nation to be an even greater nation. So different from the prevailing mode of political speeches today that seek obscure the understanding and pretend that complex problems have simple solutions.
I was born in 1973 so I was historically disconnected, until I saw the movie "Bobby." Brilliant, profound, an all star cast, great script, a must see! The movie chronicles the lives of many people who were a part of that fateful day when Bobby was assassinated. During the closing credits an audio recording of a previous speech plays while Aretha Franklin sings a song that was written for the movie. I was so moved, so effected, I actually shed a tear and felt a significant sense of loss. WOW
One of his greatest speeches. If only he'd won the Presidency, he could've made more awesome speeches like this. I can imagine how difficult this must've been for him.
This is my favorite speech, and it was the height of what any white person said during the civil rights movement of the 1960's. Robert Kennedy is among many of my influences in deciding that I want to major in political science. Thank you for teaching me what direction I want to move in.
Fhasaan and demswin64... Twins of Malice and Sons of Set you are like moths to His Just Flame gone without a sign of mourning. Shame for you and yours.
Who could dislike this speech? Savages and monsters. Cruel and unreasonable they are yet by that awful grace they shall be forgiven just like the cowards that took Americas Saints. 6 I count that I hope a Cosmic Smile shall visit them. America needs her Saints now more than ever.
Imagine the shock! I was a dozen feet from Bobby four hours before this was filmed. He addressed a huge throng at Ball State University in nearby Muncie earlier that evening. I had to make a grad class that night but I just had to see him. He looked right at me (I was on a landing just above him) and waved a little. By far the the best Kennedy.
The greatest President America never had. Like the 1960s, in 2011 we're once again caught up in hate and violence instead of caring and loving. Call me a hippie, but what else were we put on this Earth to do?
Simply the greatest impromptu speech I have ever heard of. That speech was the equivalent of RFK, if he could have, sinking his hand deep into his chest, grabbing his heart and holding it out for everybody in that audience, and everybody, including us, who's viewed it since, to see.
I watched this in my leadership class today. This could have ended in riots but instead it had ended with people joined together. It's amazing what words can do for a terrible time.
If any other person would have had to make this announcement. We would have had riots in the streets.Just a couple months later,he was also killed. As an eight year old child I remember that moment as the moment the world headed in the wrong direction. And it has done nothing but get worse ever since.
When his guards heard about the assassination they didn't want him to make his speech but he did anyway because he knew that if he didn't America would always be ruled by hatred. That just shows how great of a man he was!
What a sad, sad night. I was 9 years old, living in the heart of the old south. I can still remember the hatred, intolerance and ignorance that I encountered there. I can still remember late that night, alone in the dark of my room, wondering too where my country was headed. In just two months and two days, on my 10th birthday, Bobby Kennedy was himself gunned down. Looking back now, seeing where the world has gone all these years later, makes it sadder still. So much is lost when great men go.
and notice he wasn't using notes or prepared remarks. Spoke from his heart and mind spontaneously and eloquently. How many of today's politicians can do that?
Arriving in the predominantly black neighborhood in Indianapolis, Robert Kennedy had said no to being accompanied there by a police escort. Making this speech on the back of a flat bed truck, he brought wisdom to the people gathered there that night - and to us all forever.
I have seen Greatness in my lifetime. I was 17 when he made this speech. He was NOT reading this. He spoke from the heart. There were no riots in that city, that night.
On that night, after Bobby made this announcement, this city did not have any riots or any civil disobedience, one of the only cities to be silent that night....Thank you Bobby!
@TheSaverino Yes, I rememeber that TheSaverino. I sometimes wonder how things would have been if he had lived, certainly much better in my opinion (Just an opinion, don't clobber me for it, all you clobberers) It was a very sad year, 1968.
I have never seen any of these videos unfilled now. This is so heart wrenching and I can feel the compassion behind these words he spoke.
