Finally, the last time 9th (10th?) time I saw the ABB in Raleigh NC, Derek sat in with the band for a while, and nailed it. So what you say? Well, he was 11 years old, wore a ball cap sideways, shorts down below his knees, high top sneakers, and his Mom was hovering around the side of the stage making damn sure no one harmed her baby. Derek has had the tone and the feel almost since the beginning. His tone was a cross between Duane and Lowell George...stinging clarity, on a red SG standard.
I also saw the ABB do one of their first shows after Duane died; Dickey carried the show like a trooper, and with your eyes closed, you didn't miss Duane too badly. DB knew all the parts, and was absolutely on fire. I hadn't really noticed DB all that much before Duane died (DA cast a long shadow ;) ), but I sure did afterwards. My tastes have moved onward...Scott Henderson, Mike Landau, Andy Timmons, Danny Gatton, Larry Carlton, Tuck Andress, etc...but I still have massive respect for Duane
I saw the ABB 4 times before Duane died. I even saw them get booed off stage by a bunch of drunk rednecks at the Love Valley Rock Festival in NC right after the first album came out (maybe '69?). I was walking back from a food tent and passed within 3-4 feet of Duane walking away from the stage carrying his LP and shaking his head. They played 3 times that weekend, though, and by the time of the last show, there were no more boos. I've been playing for 47 years now, and still miss Skydog...
Used to go see them play free almost every Sunday in Piedmont Park in Atlanta. One of the best guitars/Duane Allman - and blues singers with a Hammond B3/Gregg Allman - ever!!
Duane was a god. These guys' heads were in an amazing place when they produced their first album (kind of like Zeppelin's) and to lose both Duane and Berry was just too much. This was not Southern rock. This was the Allman Brothers. The sound on this is surprisingly decent and the performance is sweet, eh? Who cares about the old video. Unreal. Thanks for sharing!

Duane once said "40% of what we play is album worthy". By his standards, I understand what he means, but the other 60% we hear on YTube and Sugarmegs is 100% wonderful to me.
I think Duane played whatever the hell he wanted to when he wanted to and the band had to improvise to keep up with him. They came out sounding polished anyway. The band was much more gifted than they get credit for. They still rock on because of talent but Skydog was and is forever missed.
My band just recorded one of the best songs by allman brothers, blue sky :) its on our channel, please go listen to it if you'd like, its with the original duane allman solo :p please let us know what you think about it.
dickey-- DAMN, just DAMN. Duane- Shit, man... SHIT!
they both reach out for any note possible in these solos, dark notes that shouldnt work.. but they do. Notes no one thought of, thats what made them good enough to solo in the same key for a half hour and not get boring
only saw them once on-stage, post-Duane. I remember the 2 drum sets and a grand piano (that was supposed to be a substitute for Duane?). also after intermission, Betts came out with only the bassest (not Oakley) and laid down an absolutely murderous solo riff - don't remember the song (or much else for that matter - I was somewhat impaired at the time); those were the days
Duane. 40 years after you left us...your music carries us on... thank you for your love of song, as it will always be your gift to the world. From your fans, and admirers who keep you alive by singing your music every day... I'm , goin' down,,, love ya, Barb
In just one year Usa and the entire world have lost two of the best two guitarists of all times. What a loss. We miss you guys. And we love you so much,I really hope you notice that.
Say a prayer ..remind Duane he is alive in our hearts,There is no way god dosnt have a plan. With all of the best musicians that died early and in the strangest ways..Just listen to this and listen well...How can almost the same thing happen with Duane to pass for his brother to carry the music and Who? Oh yea Lynard Skynard. Same exact thing..No way!!! Oh lets not forget they are all from the same place at that time..Jacksonville Fl..Is that the real cross roads???HMMm?
Duane Allman has been dead 40 years today. We love you Duane. You are the god of slide guitar. No one will ever touch your skill even with a glass bottle of coricidin
In 1970 I was a 15 yr. old in Atlanta. This was the free music in Piedmont Park on Sundays. Every Sunday. Lynyrd, Allman Brothers, The Dead and Marshall Tucker. It was kind of sick. Even being a kid, I knew how special this was. I went to a concert almost every day.
Thanks for the reminder friend, I can't believe it either. Duane's been gone almost as long as I've been alive. I'm just glad that I've heard him. He will never be forgotten.
Unbelievable performance! I like at 4:01 when he comes back into himself after his solo. That's a spiritual experience to behold. If we could all surrender like that through our daily lives this world would be a special place.
Listen to this song and after a while you will realise that you don't need any drugs at all to get "high". It is a Drug by itself. I still "fly high" when i listen to it !
@StratsRgreat meaning your experience doesn't matter enough to say hes a great guitar player..but. There are no buts. He couldn't decapitated a tech and people probably wouldn't care. I can see your concern for the tech but again, its irrelevant.
duane allman a virtuoso,, a visionary..but not a songwriter in the class of jimi or jimmy p....same goes for clapton. 60 year old southern boy here so what i'm saying is heresy around these parts .this is great.. it just aint no electric ladyland or physical graffitti ..imho
when u compare clapton and duane, it shows how little u know! little knowledge is a dangerous thing you know! and we ppl have almost no knowledge about these ppl it seems!

Duane once said "40% of what we play is album worthy". By his standards, I understand what he means, but the other 60% we hear on YTube and Sugarmegs is 100% wonderful to me.
guitarblueslefty 2 months ago
I think Duane played whatever the hell he wanted to when he wanted to and the band had to improvise to keep up with him. They came out sounding polished anyway. The band was much more gifted than they get credit for. They still rock on because of talent but Skydog was and is forever missed.

I love the Allmans and all classic rock. That's what I play in my band. I don't hear the need for 2 drummers. Obviously they do. Rock on boys!

dickey-- DAMN, just DAMN. Duane- Shit, man... SHIT!
they both reach out for any note possible in these solos, dark notes that shouldnt work.. but they do. Notes no one thought of, thats what made them good enough to solo in the same key for a half hour and not get boring

Dickey and Duane were a team, a guitar match made in heaven.

only saw them once on-stage, post-Duane.

Unbelievable performance! I like at 4:01 when he comes back into himself after his solo. That's a spiritual experience to behold. If we could all surrender like that through our daily lives this world would be a special place.
