Hi,All Over The World and Autumn Rendevous were the main two I played of her in English,as I have that cd,wish there was more of her in English, but am finding them on youtube, been a favourite of mine for a long time.
The diverse cornucopia of other covers (from Cher to Ronstadt, 4 Seasons to BGs) evidences the rich musical potential that has attracted so many other fine singers, but no other performance (not even that of Carole King herself -superb indeed and worth listening to) has quite the power and pathos of anticipated lost innocence that this rendition conveys.
She is at the Seine's edge, and feels the both pull of the swirlin current, and the giant shadow of Notre Dame.
The instrumental accompaniment here sounds rather like that in "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis Presley, which was also released in 1969. And both work well with the lyrics by evoking a powerful mix of longing and trepidation. The singer is in love "too much, baby" and aches to soar with the violins and give "completely," but a rhythmic undercurrent of suspicion rumbles on inescapably in the guitar/bass/piano (to be continued in one further post).
Awesome. The harmonies in the main verse line just glow. (Reminding of Everlies, who I'm sure I once heard sing this on the radio, but can find no trace of a recording). The sweet melody shines through and reflects the plaintive sentiment of the lyric far better than anything Amy Winehouse could possibly warble. Not that Winehouse's jazzy noodling with the BB King back-up isn't well-done, but it is ONE way of rendering the tune; there is no point in gobs of mostly feeble covers of that cover.
If you don't fall in fall with Francois listening to this you just can't be human. The beauty the voice the french mystic/alure/aloofness. The answer to the question is yes now and until the end of time.
@musikmk: Your "Startups" rendition of this -which I just took a listen to- is a rocking fine performance, similar in spirit to Francoise. Both faithfully capture the essence of the Shirelles original. (The spoken intro is a fantastic collage of diverse English/American accents, funny, but rather distracting from the music which needs no intro). Have looked in vain for a Shirelles-like acapella version of "Will you still," but your instrumentals are impressive. Hope to hear more from your group.
@BenBarfuss Shirelles almost followed Carole King's demo to the letter. The fun thing was that Carole King never got any of her demos back, because they were so good they could have been released directly. A couple of them were actually.

Something about the overall production of this is very pleasing - which is odd because normally a detest cover versions.
