Yea what year was this I too was stationed at Edwards AFB from 82-88.

I remember looking outward towards runway 22 from the Missile Shop in South Base a few miles from the Bomb Dump.

I do and don't miss Edwards ...LOL

why do they put the landing gear down so late compared to say a civilian aircraft?

right. once u lose the energy, its gone. in flight sim 10, i put the gear dow about 15 sec. before i land. thats close to the actual

Because the shuttle would fall out of the air, because the gear would induce too much drag. Shuttle does not have conventional engines to correct its approach speed.

can you actually gain speed and go for another round if you miss the landing stripe, like any normal airplane?

No you can't. The commander only has one shot at landing because the orbiter doesn't have any usable engines during the entry. The main engines draw all their fuel from the external tank and therefore are not usable after launch.

Is this the same with Russian Buran (Russian version of the Shuttle). I heard it does have some fuel left for landing

it is quite similiar to Buran, except Buran is totally computer controlled. There is always extra fuel left for landing.
