  • Wow, make your minds up USA. Is this song worth fighting for. Most of you sound like a bunch of whingers. UKok

  • this sounds like fucking shit, donovan who actually wrote the song sounds sooo much better

  • @littlesmallworld123 lol, dickhead, she wrote it...

  • @littlesmallworld123

Donovan never wrote this, you dopey twat

  • @twinesplitter What a great song. That was when songs were good and said something.

Not just sex and stupid sh#t.Are we men or mice.Just mice since 1999.

  • no donevon is the best on this song

  • How IRONIC! and the "HIDDEN PARASITES" are STILLl taking the WORLD to Their TOTALLY "ORCHESTRATED WARS!" When is the World going to "Wake-UP!" and understand that the ONLY WEAPON These PARASITES have in NOT being EXPOSED is... "ANTI SEMITIC" Claims! IT'S "TIME WORLD!" To come together as ONE "HUMAN-RACE" and "UNITE!" to now PUBLICLY EXPOSE THESE LYING DECEIVING "PARASITES" for what they have been doing to OUR PLANET and The HUMAN-RACE for CENTURIES! wake-upbeforeitstoolate(dot)com WORLD UNITE

  • Thanks Dad for protecting this country-USA.For helping the helpless!

  • Irgendwie kommt es mir so vor, als würde sie die Lippen ziemlich unsynchron bewegen.

    Playback?

  • @MacPic1 nein, es ist nicht lipsynch, ist es mein Computer.

  • SHE didn't write the song. Donovan wrote it, but that's irrelevant. For all the intellectual midgets I'll just break down what the song is saying.

DONOVAN IS SAYING IF NO ONE JOINS THE MILITARY That means nobody in any country ALL AROUND THE WORLD !!!! Then there wouldn't be ANY SOLDIERS

    NO SOLDIERS MEANS NO ARMIES

    NO ARMIES MEANS NO WAR.

That means the lunatics who send us to war would have to take up arms themselves. Could you imagine Obama picking up a gun and shooting at Ahmadinejad ? NO

  • @TelecasterLPGTop

no, Buffy wrote the song, it's well documented, and non refuted.

  • @rutebeuf2 This is a Buffy song......

  • p.s. who are you to say what the song is about. did you write it? No! do you know the person who wrote it? No! so shut your pretentious mouth.

  • @rutebeuf2 Thank you. Yes- Buffy Saint Marie, a Native American Indian. I believe she was the one who withheld the % of her income tax payment that went to finance the unlawful Vietnam police action. Threatened c/ jail for income tax evasion.And- BTW, JFK twist his attempted hits on Cuba's Castro, Bay of Pigs- stepped up its US "Peacekeepers". Ike started it- Kennedy was on same page. DNM.Thanx for the magic of your videos & the great comments they elicit.

  • @foucault1020

Buffy Sainte-Marie is a Canadian born in Quappelle, Sask. Piapot Reservation. NOT an American even though she now lives in Maui.

  • @rutebeuf2

What the hell are you talking about? Buffy is a Canadian First Nations Woman, born in Canada, lived in Canada long after Vietman was over. Stop talking out your ass.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop Buffy wrote the song NOT Donovan so please check your facts next time!

  • @TelecasterLPGTop My, what would we do without intellectual genuises like you ;-)

  • @GEMINISTWIN1 Well you'd be totally lost :)

  • @fannycraddock99 Not without you I can assure you, most people knew who wrote it, but didn't want to come across as a know all pillock like you, by the way, that was a cr@p show you had, must have been all the liquor

    ;-D

  • @fannycraddock99 Then I was found ;-D

  • @TelecasterLPGTop Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote it, Donovan covered it.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop no she was first

  • @TelecasterLPGTop thank you oh great one for simplyfying it for us intellectually compromised.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop get a life, as a soldier, a medic saving lives of my brothers in arms (not the insurgents), grow up

  • @TelecasterLPGTop

    WOW,SOMEONE FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT.

    FUCK WAR.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop yes I could see obama doing that...

  • @TelecasterLPGTop Buffy Actually Wrote this song and Donovan sang it. She wrote it on her way back to Toronto when she was at an airport. She some soldiers who were wheeling injured to a flight and she began to think about why soldiers fight.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop

Donovan didn't write the song BSM did.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop Ever heard of conscription?

  • @TelecasterLPGTop

Lol, Not Donovan I'm afraid. This song and it's lyrics are 100% Carry the Ketle Buffy. Donovan sang and recorded it, but had nothing to do with it's origins.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop or Bush.....

  • Oops ! it's out of synk. I will have to look for another version...

  • She could have put the UK in there it's got a nice ryhm.

  • Gotta cry. Wonderful <3

  • Universal............

  • still amazing

  • Who conducted the "witch hunt" and who "boycotted" her?? I remeber when this song came out it got a lot of arrplay and she made many personal appearances. So i don't get what you're saying. You made it up???

  • Buffy sold the rights of the song for$1 and a witch hunt was instigated by the American Government against her, she was boycotted over it.

Its people like her that keep countries free from governments who want to shut you up.

  • @Enerjee - actually she's First Nation - Cree. Born in Canada - Saskatchewan. And I believe born in 1941 - she's 70 now.

  • She's saying "Just Say No" to fighting. They can put you in jail, but they can't make you kill someone. Also, if you're in the military, you don't have to follow unlawful orders.

  • As a vet myself this song convicts me and reminds me of how I was used by the US...but I made the decision to join and I will have to live with that. I have to look at myslef, i was young and mislead but it was on me to join and how I regret it, but how proud I am of my teenage sons who refuse to register for selective service..

  • Get real! Parents, at least good ones, are always proud of their children even if they don't follow their beliefs. My oldest is a Republican, makes in the high six digets, and my youngest is a pot smoking hippy that makes in the high five digets. One believes in war stuff, the other says the hell with war. So until you have children, have been to war as I have, try to respect the beliefs of others (sans vomit). I hate war, and as a disabled Nam Vet, I'll say "don't go!"

  • I was in line at a grocery store several days ago, when I couldn't help overhearing a conversation between several folks that hadn't seen each other for a while. One man asked a woman how her son was doing, and if he had pursued his interest in art after high school.

She told them all, in no uncertain terms, that her son, Robby, was in Iraq 'fighting the enemy'.

She went on to tell them how proud she was that he was "fighting for our freedoms".

I abandoned my cart, and went outside to vomit.

  • @MichaelRMcCoy I know what you mean. you vomoting shows that you are much more then a corparate tool. I can't help but think how simple that woman is. wonder who she'll blame if her son comes back in a box. sorry if my comment upsets you but it is how I view it.

  • It takes a very special courage to stand up to 'wrong' when it is screaming in your face . Especially when that wrong carries your own coffin.

  • @OffyDoavy It takes courage to pick up a weapon and fight the enemies of your freedom in a foreign field. Any hippie hobo can pick up a guitar or a picket sign.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan

You should probably let your Sergeant know that you are racist, homophobic, and violent.

You need a good schooling in the Barracks, if you acted like this in the 'real' military, you'd get discharged for being mentally unstable.

I think they should send you to Egypt so you can get some perspective.

  • @skittlesandcart Yeah you're probably right, because liberals wormed their way into the military and turned it into a barney style cluster fuck. Other than that shut your suck because you speak about things you don't know.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan

    Lay off the Redbull!

  • Take the guitar strings and hanged

  • In 1934 Atatürk wrote a tribute to the ANZACs killed at Gallipoli:

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. ... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well."

  • I hope this slut is burning in hell now, her name is unknown to people that matter. She thinks she is making a difference, Alexander made a difference, Caesar made a difference, Patton made a difference and all the men that marched under them not her. She will go to hell and burn forgotten forever, but the men who live with the blood and soul of Achilles those are the men who live and are remembered forever.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan you just made a fool of yourself.

  • @MickyyisMick I made a fool of your mother in bed last night you hippie faggot. You weak excuse for a human.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan 1) She is not denying that Ceasar or any other made a difference, she questions the methods 2) Do you realise that the Trojan war began after a fight over a woman? So the people were a weapon for a twist between only two men. I won't deny Achilles' outstanding strength. But that war wasn't for the people.3) She does not mention being a difference herself, she sings about her feelings and asks us to think... no wrong with asking even if you don't agree.

  • @boterhampate I think she should be shot.

  • Comment removed

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan

    Because your a fat redneck.

  • @skittlesandcart No I'm a soldier, you're the fat liberal faggot pacifist son of a bitch that fears everything. You hate war because you don't understand it, you hate soldiers because you are jealous of those who have courage. Go smoke your pot you god damn hippie.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan I don't hate war, I don't like folks who come on to comment boards like 'shoot her' without any backing on their opinions.

I have even less faith in this country if your the one defending it.

  • @skittlesandcart Then go live with the fucking muslims then if you have no faith in my country. I say shoot her because she sings songs about evil soldiers enabling war. It's not that damn simple, she is a coward for spitting on the men that lay their lives down in the name of freedom.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan

I don't think most soldiers share the same views as you, you realize if you lose the freedom to say what you want, offensive to others or not, then you lose freedom completely.

You want her to be shot because you don't like what she is saying, yet you fight for this country so people can keep these rights of freedom. It seems your the one who wants to run our country like the taliban!

  • @skittlesandcart I respect other's right to free speech, shit even lay my life down for it. I just think they should reciprocate the favor and not spit in the face of those who protect their freedoms.

  • @EpicTrollBeastMan

    Fair enough.

  • Why is it that Canada has a day of remembrance to horning these glorified murders?

  • I cried all the way through this song, this should be played to all the world leaders, especially that war monger Tony BLAIR.

  • It's a fabulous song sung very well but I personally prefer the Donavan version.

  • donovan did it, the yanks always claim they DID IT, we defend they attak and leave us to wipe up...

  • This song is soo biutiful!! and it is soo classical it is relaxing mee al the time

  • everyone ALWAYS has a choice to kill or not to. to go to war or not to. to join the military or not be fooled by their money bribes. . i guess if you have no brains why would you care about killing anyone?? so take the risk of getting killed yourself i guess..

  • Wooo..she´s sooo beaut !

  • glad she was still singing in 1996. We are all getting older.

  • if i lived in the u s a ,i would not buy anthing from vietnam ,ever,

  • A great song by a beautiful lady. Part of the reason we got out of Vietnam was because our soldiers were refusing to fight. They were fragging officers and going to the brig rather than fight. I know because I saw them doing it. Buffy was right.

  • Imprisonment is nothing. I'd have gone to prison rather than fight in these two bullsh*t wars when I was enlisted. Execution, well, that's another matter, but those countries have plenty of other problems as well. I suppose you could say it's up to those of us who can put up with a bit of time in jail to start making the change towards a more civilized world.

  • @rosmia2

she's saying that it's the governments of the countries that the people elect or that are forced upon the people that send the universal soldier to war, and yes, if they refused, would be imprisoned by these same governments.

  • No, she's saying it's the people that elect governments sending soldiers to war. People like you and me (being a soldier myself). This song hit the nail right on the head. Most people protesting against soldiers don't understand that it's themselves sending us to war. After all, we are not to reason why; we are but to do and die. We don't lose limbs, life or soul for some government, country or higher morale. We do it for the brother next to us. We do it for the people back home. Think about it.

  • @Sarendil : Well said, Sarendil.

  • @rutebeuf2 I respectfully disagree. She's saying war is everyone's fault and responsibility. "Him and you and me". Wars cannot be fought without soldiers, so if everyone refused to be a soldier there would be no war. Likewise, pacifists cannot be jailed or executed without people willing to do it. Blaming the gov't or politicians is passing the buck. It is each person's actions (or sometimes inaction) that legitimize war. Ending war requires everyone (or the vast majority anyway) to say "no".

  • What would happen if they threw a war but nobody came?

  • @ibonyun Great answer. Says it all.

A perfect response to the legions of brainwashed automatons who cry "Without him we'd all be speaking German/Japanese!"

  • @Camerameister thanks. i wonder if those automatons ever wonder why they're speaking english.

  • @ibonyun I don't think they even listened to the words. You could understand it if they thought it was a bit anti-solder (even though for reasons you explained, it isn't). But they seemed to think soldiers are only on "our side". The very point she's making is that he's universal, i.e.: British, German, she even says Japanese and Russian.

  • @rosmia2

She is not blaming, but rather calls his sense of resonsibility.

    BTW:

If the other soldiers do not arrest or kill those who ask to execute or imprison the one that did not obey to go to war it makes perfect sense.

I however agree that this is a quite naive idea, but a peaceful one.

We all know that it never works, but we wish it would.

    Like "imagine" by John Lennon.

It is a daydream, not a realistic vision.

  • @rosmia2 I don't think the message was for the soldiers. It is for the citizens who don't pay attention and accept things as they have been, without working for change. If it makes you recall that maybe the world could be better, she did get it. If it inspires you to argue that such a better world cannot be, then she wrote the song for you, because you have stopped dreaming of a better world for our own grandchildren, after centuries of our ancestors dreaming of one for us. A dream is the seed

  • @rosmia2 the answer to that is that a person needs to quit saying they are "protecting us" but admit they are willing to kill others because he doesn't want to stand up for what's right and suffer the consequences of having a conscience.

  • @rosmia2 Since the War of 1812 and before, my ancestors and relatives have fought in the wars. One uncle who served in Korea came home twisted and in agony. He died alone back in the hills with the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun in his mouth. I have also had uncles who refused to participate, who were then summarily sentenced to five years in prison. All were victims, and I find it difficult to blame any, but those who had the courage to defy the beast its 'due', to not cooperate, I respect more.

  • @rosmia2"It has been for some time a generally receiv’d Opinion, that a military Man is not to enquire whether a War be just or unjust; he is to execute his Orders. All Princes who are dispos’d to become Tyrants must probably approve of this Opinion, and be willing to establish it. But is it not a dangerous one? since, on that Principle, if the Tyrant commands his Army to attack and destroy, not only an unoffending Neighbor Nation, but even his own Subjects, the Army is bound to obey."-BFranklin

  • @rosmia2 And who does execute? The soldiers, right? If ALL of them said NO to the violence and refused to hold a gun, the government could do simply NOTHING.

  • @rosmia2 well she says "his orders come from far away no more" - that means NOW he is NO LONGER forced to go to war. that's what i understood.

  • Comment removed

  • @rosmia2 well who wud detain them? who wud execute them? another universal soldier

  • the audio is not synchronized with mouth or moving picture;regardless a terrific video!!! love it!

  • bravo belle chanson bien interprétée, belle voix à réentendre souvent

  • FANTASTIC SONG WITH NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH....GLEN CAMPBELL'S VERSION IS THE BEST....

  • get that voice and what a song

  • poignant ... powerful

  • So who wrote this song anyway? Donovan or this lady?

  • Buffy (this lady) wrote it.

  • @rutebeuf2

i dont believe this lady wrote it...if you look at Live Vids of Donovan, you can see that Universal Soldier is at least 40 year old.

  • @Sheo079 Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote this song in 1964. Buffy didn't get recognition for her song because she was on Pres. Nixons enemy list. Check history.

  • @Sheo079 - This lady (Buffy Sainte Marie) did write the song. She's a native American Indian and was born in 1942. She also wrote "Lift Us Up Where We Belong" and "Soldier Blue". Check her out on YT.

  • @Sheo079 Buffy is at least 40 years old ... and then some!

  • @Seasass Um, Buffy is 70 this year dude. ANd yes, she's still performing. I hope to see her soon live.

  • @Bookwormygirly Lucky you! Enjoy the show. But you should direct your corrective comments to Sheo079, the person who insisted that Donovan, not Buffy, wrote the song because " ... if you look at Live Vids of Donovan, you can see that Universal Soldier is at least 40 year old [sic]" I was subtly (perhaps too subtly?) pointing out to that person that Buffy was old enough to have written the song before those 40-year-old vids of Donovan.

  • @metzker7962 This GREAT DAME of literature wrote this song. She sold it for a pittance and later bought the rights to it back for a huge sum. She wrote it from her heart and never seriously considered the commercial value. It was the summary anthem of a generation.

  • This is without a doubt the most poignant and therefore most important song that was ever written. Some might say there may be a greater song written about love. I have never heard it and I believe I never will.

  • You are one of my favorite songwriters in the world! Tehema, Yolo, Yakima

  • Shipping off to the army on monday. 11.01.2010.

    Conscription army is a bummer.

Good song. I agree. Though I'll be firing a rifle in 4 weeks.

  • @zebelih good luck and remember don;t do what Dempsey did "He forgot to duck"

  • Classic song :)

  • Can anyone not be touched from this song from her?

    Me not.

    Me never.

    I am from germany.

    But I can hear her.

    She touched me deep inside.

    Same with R.Mirabal and J.Shenandoah.

  • I CAN...

  • @flyArea52 i love shenandoah!! she has such "peace and power" try joy harjo too

  • @flyArea52 go fuck yourself

  • I AGREE

  • Lucky me saw her live this summer, talked a few words with her after the consert too... I'm just praying it will not be the last time, Buffy!

  • It's awesome, beautiful, Buffy Sainte-Marie is truly talented. That's lagging, not lip synching.

  • She sounds as wonderful today as she did many years ago... no help from any technology. As beautiful as ever.

  • is it lagging? or is she lip sycing?

  • sorry, it's the upload, it's perfectly insync from TV, but my comuter i guess video/audio card isn't up to snuff. it's not lip synched. thanks

  • @rutebeuf2 i thought it was a japenese thing from the early 60's

  • how can anyone lip sync that bad? :))

    it's lagging.

  • I just hard her live in concert- she is not lip-syncing, She is as wonderful today as she was forty-five years ago.

  • @7az1

    Lagging, of course.

  • War is a Racket. I spent 33 years in military service... most of my time as a hi class muscleman for big business, for Wall Street & the bankers .... I was a gangster for capitalism.

  • Glen Cambells version was actually higher on the charts than Donovan...

  • Donovan 'covered' a lot of people, ho, ho, ho...

  • classic donavan

  • NO classic Buffy Sainte-Marie Donavan may have covered but it wasn't his fight and she is a fantastic writer

  • agreed on every point

  • Ask not what's inside men that makes them kill and burn.....ask what surrounds them

  • That's a great quote. Is it original? I might like to borrow that! If not orig., can you site the author?

    Thanks!

  • yah its original.........use however much you'd like.....might be nice in a song

  • Thanks! I'm adding it to my list of quotes that I find profound. I just might consider putting it into a lyric!

  • It's probably been said before. Something along these lines must have been uttered before.

  • Genocide World Wide.

    And society is brainwashed.

They hug their TV, love Big Brother.

The news is an exciting story for the tv zombies.

  • Greed.. greed.. greed..thats the basis of

and when they have everything.. they want

    more.. so it goes on..

Tibetans are the only race of purity.. love &

  • Many have identified Donovan with this song, but the original is still the original; I never have listened to this version until now, but it's ranking immediately above D's cover!!!

  • I thinks Donovans cover is better.

But, she still wrote the song so credit to her.

  • Peace is easy.

We don't need a paradise to establish peace.

We just have to convince those who think peace can NEVER be established.

They spoil all efforts and the tragic is they don't see their failure and always blame others to do them wrong.

Peace is easy, but only if YOU keep it.

    Remember that.

  • The only peace that can be acheived is the end of this world and the beginning of Paradise on earth.

  • Regarding indianapril and Khono's arguement, both of you should read a book each.

Indianapril, I suggest Dr. Nyizli's account of Auschwitz, you will see that Hitler allowed such inhumane things that go far beyond stealing land and attempted genocide.

And Khono, read Other Casualties, the Allies had hundreds of thousands of PoW and let the vast majority of them die, because they would simply not treat them well and allowed them to die. There're two sides to every story.

  • I must say, I like the Donovan version better.

  • I have a question for all here-Why the hell are we in Iraq?I mean, what's the point?

  • Oil. Isn't it (sadly) obvious.

  • Comment removed

  • you're pathetic.

  • I love Buffy St. Marie

  • er bit of a problem with voice video syc - aside of all the other rhetoric

  • Families cannot live in peace so what chance the nations of the world.!!

  • Of course Families can live in peace. Its your choice.

  • Yes, well said. Peace begins within ourselves - each and every one of us. If we cannot find peace within, we cannot radiate peace without and beyond.

  • Peace is an ideal world but unfortunately whilst the world continues to argue and fight over politics, religeon, colour of skin and mostly MONEY the world will always have war and the unessearry deaths that occur

  • Thank You and you are right these things are going on today. In south american and in africa as well as the usa. Stoppin war is not the answer, beside we will never be able to stop war. There will always be good guys and bad guys.

  • What about the hundreds and thousands of people You killed just with blanks. Blanks that were infected with the small pocks virus. Thank You very much for killing the buffalo so you could starve us to death. So next time you are looking at your house on the lake and your BMW Remember the people that were killed so you could have it.

  • indianapril, indeed I believe you're correct that we are largely ignorant of the suffering we inflict and have inflicted upon so many. I NEVER hear mention of those who lost their lives/homes for us to live in such comfort, except when they were powerful (usually white). So many people celebrate Columbus yet have no idea that reliable sources say he was responsible for genocide on the order of tens of thousands or more. So many people bring up Hitler, but never mention the less popular.

  • So nest time You think of how bad Hitler was think how bad is was for us. Nest time You walk on Your land your or Wail your watch your TV. Think how many were killed so you could live there. How many mothers sisters fathers brothers aunts and uncle died so you could have it and put a wal-mart on the land. So death camps were bad you as gas champers were bad you say.

  • I am Native Choctaw. My people My tribe and may may may other tribes Died were KILLED THAT MY FRIENDS IS JUST AS BAD AS WHAT HITLER DID. You white people are so afraid to lose There america. What about the people that that you killed so you could have Your america. We has been fighting for so long. You think the fight is over. The fight is not over YOU people still are trying to take YOUR land. OOO God Some many were killed on 9/11 i say good. I am glad that you got to taste of how it felt

  • The last pa
