I think you have to recognize that there are times when someone is just going to kill you, and you have nothing to lose by fighting. Sure, the guy might just pull the trigger and kill you - but you're already in trouble.
Krav maga is a highly effective fighting technique. It works. That's why the Israeli army uses it.
@Stariehx average reaction time is about a half second. then take into account most people dont want to get caught shooting someone so theyll be paranoid and not completely focused on you. that drops their reaction time to atleast a full second if not more. Now count one missisippi in your head v.s. how long it takes to swing your arm across your body. one second is plenty of time to redirect the weapon before he fires
@peTa220 if you push it up then the muzzle has to sweep from your chest over your neck and head before it's clear. If you go to the side, it's clear of you much quicker. In this situation, you really can't be worrying about people behind you.
Minimizing distance is useful in any gun takeaway. It is surprising how slow human reaction time is for most people, especially when they don't expect the victim to react. I've done hundreds of gun from the front takeaways but not from this distance. I'm going to test my distance limits with my training partners. Thanks for this great video Jarret. A great thing about Krav is that it can evolve rather than having some "master" somewhere saying that it must be done in this way and only this way.
...remember that the guy with gun have the same speed of reaction than you, and he's with a lot of adrenaline in his mind. If the distance is long too much, the shooter could do a step back and continue keeping the distance, and in that case you're in very trouble. The secret of that technique is close the distance. Don't react, unless extremely necessary, until you reach the distance to do it right, or take the risk of have a bullet on your face for do not pay attention on what is really useful
This disarms is just good to a close distance. If you are on some distance that don't allow you do the moviments fast and surprisefull, it don't work, remember that the guy with gun have the same speed of reaction than you. If you are on some distance that don't allow you do the moviments fast and with surprise factor, it don't work...
i'm pretty sure if you're getting robbed with a gun pointed at you the assailant is going to probably be some punk ass untrained person and isn't going to have two hands on the weapon
It's sad when most robbers with a weapon such as a gun don't even understand how to use it most times. They would make simple mistakes like, forget to turn "Safety" off or not realize not every gun has a hair trigger and he underestimated a 6lb pull :/
lol when he took the extra steps back he doesnt have near enough time to get to the gun hed definitely would get shot lunging at someone like that and if somebodyy didnt shoot him in that scenario they probably never had intentions of shooting him anyways
I have a question? When they are talking, they are still thinking about pulling the trigger. And people use hand motions. So the moment you go for the gun it might not be in the spot it was last. You should say something so they process the thing you said, then you make the move.
@xxcaution210xx That would have to be one HUGE step. More like a leap back. And he would have to have better reflexes than and Olympic runner. Chances are, your attacker is in a state of tunnel vision, looking at and only being able to see what he's aiming at. And if you paid attention, once Jarret grabbed the weapon, he drove through the opponent. If he took a step back, Jarret would still be right there in his face. I think you're under the misconception that he is staying stationary.
@xxcaution210xx Try this exercise...have a friend run forward and your run backwards and see who moves faster...As a defender, I can move forward faster then I can backwards. I teach my guys and gals to move into the attacker's zone (as does this gentleman) to get a speed edge on the opponent...as well as a psychological effect as well.
What if the attacker is pointing the gun with both hands? You know, the way law enforcement are trained to hold their weapons kind of deal. Wouldn't that make it harder to redirect?
@MarineRecon18 You can attempt that, but in a combat situation, it will be very difficult to set this correctly. More then likely the attacker is untrained and his/her finger will be on the trigger and a round has a high likely hood of going off. That is why you redirect the line of fire and move into the attacker's space.
I do have one comment about the question asked and answered. You want to minimize your target areas by turning your body. At this distance keeping both hands equally facing the attacker will expose more target area. By turning your body, deflecting the weapon you minimize your targets. Get that other hand in play quickly.
I believe we should take the attitude to defend ourselves even in the most undesirable situations. This video gives some ideas on how to do it. Guns do not have the angle of versatility as a knife. Bullets only come out on one path, as Jarred talks about in another video. Moving off the "line of attack", just like we would if being punched, our odds get better. By not letting the attacker chase us with his weapon our odds get even better.
great technique except defender telegraphed his intentions too much. Starting leaning in slowly. He should practice remaining still and then exploding forward.
I have seen a lot of bad techniques from people that "practice" Krav, but you don't seem to be one of them. It's great to see someone that actually knows what they are doing.
Conditioning. Imagine if, in training, you are used to handing the gun back to the other guy. Come a real-life situation, the stress and your conditioning might make you automatically hand back the weapon after a take-down.
This way, the worst you would do is automatically place it on the ground away from him.

@KravCam No it's not that at all sorry you misunderstood me but the delay is so long...do you not feel that he had ample time to do what he pleased if he was attacking you in such a situation??? Not trying to waste your time just ask an honest question. Thanks
@KravCam What if the the hammer is already back or it is a double action weapon? isn't the robber going to end up accidentally (or on purpose) pulling the trigger while your hand is on the slide? Is there part of the take away that keeps that from happening until your other hand is free to grab the back of the weapon?
@LIKEAWHIRLWIND Just cause someone wants whats in your wallet doesn't mean there willing to shoot you in the face for it..they may be doing it out of necessity just wanting to make a quick buck, and no he doesn't have plenty of time to shot,it took a fraction of a second to redirect the aim of fire from his head...and if you've ever fired a handgun and yanked the trigger to hard you'd know that you'll pull the barrel of the gun upwards more than likely missing...
@LIKEAWHIRLWIND Oh he Will take you're shit if The Attacker needs something from you ! If you get the opportunity do it if u dont like it just Die ... Troll
Because people don't want to shoot you if they're desperate, they just want your shit. People get shot when the assailant panics and loses control of the situation. Before then, IF you're in range of the grab and the assailant is not prepared, you take his weapon if possible and flee
@LIKEAWHIRLWIND Not every armed robber intends to kill at first. They only use the gun as a last resort, otherwise they'd be more likely to be caught by police. Even if he did want to just shoot you in the face, you'd still have that split second to attack him before he raises and fires the gun.
@LIKEAWHIRLWIND I agree with KravCam. Because dumbasses that do shit like hold up people for money probably dropped out of 8th grade, nowhere to go, and don't even know how to use a gun much less have the damn balls to pull that trigger. So yes, fuck defending ourselves and our families because we're just gonna die anyways.
Exc ellent-as to then question asked in vidio-the victim is beating the thought process not the pull of the trigger-so he lunges forward (off center)takes the weapon and dcontinues attack as shown.
Just wanted to emphasize a point that has not been addressed in many the gun defense maneuvers. The footwork & tuning of the shoulders is essential. Not only does it limit the attacker's "picture" of you, (as mentioned here) but it also helps eliminate your upper-body from being shot during the initial re-direct. J.M. does the techniques very well, but being available on the internet, he should also address the "more important" safety aspects. Can't take the gun if you get shot in the process.
If the range is far enough, I choose to turn my back to the attacker while I am walking toward him, so I use gun disarming technique for a threat from behind.
the only thing i didn't like about his defense is in the very first second of the video he gradually leans forward and takes a whole second doing it. that may get you shot in the head. instead you should go from totally relaxed in a defensive and non-threatening posture instantly into a decisive defense to seize the weapon.
@sandyman714 I completely agree, he should have had his hands up out stretched to minize the distance and look submissive. the lean was too long and drawn out.
This Disarms hurts like hell, i almost lost my finger, i had it on the trigger. But this is very effective, but this should only be used as a last resort, I don't want to be all Rambo and risk my life over a wallet. Use only when its somebody who wants to kill after they taken your money
Not that I don't appreciate gun defense or Krav Maga (both are freakin' awesome!), but it would be a really bad idea to grab the gun around the slide like that, because if it goes off (and odds are it will) you'll burn your hand like a mother fucker; I don't care who you are it will make you let go of the gun, and the guy will shoot you. End of story. I'm not saying you can't seriously fuck someone up in a fight with Krav Maga (you can), but when it comes to gun defense I'd leave it to Ninjutsu.
these guys don't even know what it is like to get punshed, they only get tought some counter tactics that could be effective what if your opponent just holsters his gun and starts proffesionally pounding ur krav maga ass?
No this is Krav Maga. More than amartial art, this will protect you so you can make it home every day. So all you tree huggers who believe people are all good and don't intend to kill....you can shove that ideology up your ass because this is the real world. I think everyone should learn some form of martial art and this is it. This is the one its awesome
it's brutal because it's practical... the Asian styles have either been corrupted by showmanship or they don't train for practical, real world scenarios. This is a problem that Bruce Lee identified quite some time ago. Before he died, he'd founded an entirely new style that was pretty adaptable. It still didn't handle things like disarming assailants with guns or knives though. Krav Maga is a brutal art from a brutal part of the world.
The average person had a reaction time of what, .2 seconds? That's while paying the most attention to a single task. If you're holding a gun, demanding cash and basicly not paying very close attention to the victim's move, the reaction time could be as much as .3+ seconds. That's more than enough time to get out of the line of fire and take control of the situation (given that you know how to do that, of course).
He said .2. Get that? POINT 2. That is, 2/1000ths of a second.
I'm so bored of seeing people speak to others in such an obnoxious, arrogant way on here. What's the point, Fred? What's makes you think that you are so much beetter than "TheAnimal" or that they are so beneath you that you can treat them like that? Would you do it on the street or in the pub? No, cause you know you would be put on your arse.
You prove nothing except that you are a bit of a scumbag, speaking to people like that.
a humans reaction time is way faster than that honestly in a situation like that if i was the criminal my adrenaline would be pumping and even while not paying attention
the reaction time would still be like .40-.70 sec.
Most skilled gunmen are taught not to hold the gun like that for this very reason. However supposing they do if you try this and miss you are very dead. I understand however that true Krav Maga is about life and death so I get it. It's just not very practical or safe for civilians.
Then comply as best you can. Try to either close the distance, or comply with your attacker's orders. Losing your wallet won't cost you your life. Running at him from 20 ft away probably will.
Then you are following the light... There is no ultimate technique for disarming a gun. But there are few tactics how to minimize danger of pulling his gun back and other stuff like that.
My dear boy have you ever handled a firearm? Do you know how long it takes to actualy fire a weapon vs moveing out of the line of fire? Have you ever faced down the barrel of one? I have and believe me it can and has been done, this is why these techniques are taught to military units and police organizations.
Thats simple,he is then forced into a retreat you now have control. He will not be able to aim nor fire with any acuracy once his hand begins to withdraw. You simply continue the side steping motion and close in to gain furthur control of the weapon.
Im kinda new to this, i find it really cool, but umm....if the threat panics firing off a few rounds while ur holding the slide....wont that umm.....hurt?
no, you can hold a slide shut and if the gun is fired, it will cause it not to reload, jaming his weapon, this is why you see the guy "pretend" to re-rack the gun AFTER he takes it from the BG.
Krav Maga is constantly changing, I have been trained in a combat style of Karv and this is the the correct way to do it. Grabbing the Weapon will also cause a malfunction unlike grabbing the wrist which will result in the weapon being able to fire many times. I also like that he uses strikes to the head. This is also very effective throwing your enemy off guard. This guy is good!!!
for him to have laerned from imi he would have to be almost 70 years old, and in krav maga you are taught to never immediately grab the gun in a face to face assault and instead grab the wrist rotate your hips to move your core out of the line of fire, pull the attacker, injur the attacker, and then disarm
I'm not sure where you get your information but thats not correct. Imi passed in 98. Also in the recent fight science show Amir shows exactly the same disarm. I think it's here on youtube as well. On top of that I have seen old footage of Imi doing it this way in demos. Eyal does it this way as well. So lets see if Imi and the two people given founders diplomas do it this way if it's not Krav Maga what is it?
you grab the wrist only with knives, in general its always better to gain control over the weapon rather than the wrist since the wrist can turn... you even grab the knife in certain cases.
by grabing the gun and twisting it you take advantage of the weakness of the wrist, loosening the grip.
in krav maga strength comes from leavrege and taking advantage of weak spots of the body. its not logical to rely on moving youself out of the line of fire when he can still aim.
@kikerd2 krav maga is somewhat of an umbrella term anyway, much like kali its changed and subdivided, although this is the original way regardless of that
@kikerd2 right or wrong this defence is too hard to pull off, you have to be really fast and accurate. There is a high chance the attacker pulls back if you miss the opportunity to catch the gun nozzle and even if you did catch the nozzle without complete control you are still within distance to the line of fire. Sorry but wouldnt recommend this move.
Never give another man you weapon... That is why he didn't hand it back to him. In order to be able to do this is real life, you must practice like it at all times.
Dumb comment. A fat slob w/ no training cannot do this but someone who prepares for this and gets their reaction time down to milliseconds can do this.
I guess a better solution is to just get shot then, and not even try to live. Suppress any preservation instinct you have, and take a bullet in the head. Good plan.
i find these videos useful but i think in these situations you only strike if you have too or if you think or know if your life is in danger. u never really know whether or not it is or isnt. what if you give the guy your money and u still die? so just knowing this info is helpful so thx and for all the others that thinks its stupid think a teebit more b4 commenting
Dude, the point of this isn't that it makes you an invincible superman who is invulnerable to bullets. It's about the best way to try to survive in a situation such as this, if you choose to fight back.
Even if the gun is held with 2 hands and a vice grip, fact is, Krav is designed for something like that. After redirecting the pistols line of fire, you twist it back into the attacker, breaking his hold. Easy. Try Krav Maga's plucking technique, it's just explosive movement that breaks a grip or hold. It's about leverage, not always strength.
How many times did he need to say "REDIRECT THE LINE OF FIRE" He makes a body defense and moves off angle. He makes it obvious to his students that you need to move out of the line of fire as the first move then move the muzzle of the firearm. Theres a reason where so many law enforcement and military organizations use this technique.
absolutely correct about the one hand less distraction than two this guy is real man on point like a M.F.

What happens when you redirect the gun and your hand is on the slide and he fires anyway, the slide of the gun will recoil and tear your hand apart.
WootKenny 3 weeks ago
NAHH as soon as you start to make a massive motion like that he'll flinch and within seconds shoot you down.
Not buying it.
1) Talk to destract as you move tiny bit closer
2) Use a 'shaolin monk' like attack where by you dive your upper body as far down to the ground as possible whilst moving forward at speed.
3) Sweep up with arm knocking aiming hand toward th sky
4) Punch to the nose - and with the whole motion and speed behind this you'll most probably knock him unconscious.

oldsgtmajusmc 1 year ago
Just wanted to emphasize a point that has not been addressed in many the gun defense maneuvers. The footwork & tuning of the shoulders is essential. Not only does it limit the attacker's "picture" of you, (as mentioned here) but it also helps eliminate your upper-body from being shot during the initial re-direct. J.M. does the techniques very well, but being available on the internet, he should also address the "more important" safety aspects. Can't take the gun if you get shot in the process.

If the range is far enough, I choose to turn my back to the attacker while I am walking toward him, so I use gun disarming technique for a threat from behind.

the only thing i didn't like about his defense is in the very first second of the video he gradually leans forward and takes a whole second doing it. that may get you shot in the head. instead you should go from totally relaxed in a defensive and non-threatening posture instantly into a decisive defense to seize the weapon.
sandyman714 2 years ago
@sandyman714 I completely agree, he should have had his hands up out stretched to minize the distance and look submissive. the lean was too long and drawn out.

This Disarms hurts like hell, i almost lost my finger, i had it on the trigger. But this is very effective, but this should only be used as a last resort, I don't want to be all Rambo and risk my life over a wallet. Use only when its somebody who wants to kill after they taken your money

Exactly, which is what Krav teaches. It's for life or death situations.

anonimystro12345 2 years ago
Not that I don't appreciate gun defense or Krav Maga (both are freakin' awesome!), but it would be a really bad idea to grab the gun around the slide like that, because if it goes off (and odds are it will) you'll burn your hand like a mother fucker; I don't care who you are it will make you let go of the gun, and the guy will shoot you. End of story. I'm not saying you can't seriously fuck someone up in a fight with Krav Maga (you can), but when it comes to gun defense I'd leave it to Ninjutsu.
JHDiddles12 2 years ago
these guys don't even know what it is like to get punshed, they only get tought some counter tactics that could be effective what if your opponent just holsters his gun and starts proffesionally pounding ur krav maga ass?

@pikenknaager That's not true. Sparring is a huge factor in Krav Maga training. Krav Maga is not just about pistol disarms you know.

deifiedx 2 years ago 2
No this is Krav Maga. More than amartial art, this will protect you so you can make it home every day. So all you tree huggers who believe people are all good and don't intend to kill....you can shove that ideology up your ass because this is the real world. I think everyone should learn some form of martial art and this is it. This is the one its awesome
nuckingfuts37 2 years ago
LOL nice. I happen to be a tree hugger that does Krav Maga and Tae Kwon Do. You can still be an idealist without being naive. ;)
annelucienne 2 years ago
it's brutal because it's practical... the Asian styles have either been corrupted by showmanship or they don't train for practical, real world scenarios. This is a problem that Bruce Lee identified quite some time ago. Before he died, he'd founded an entirely new style that was pretty adaptable. It still didn't handle things like disarming assailants with guns or knives though. Krav Maga is a brutal art from a brutal part of the world.
luccaskunk 2 years ago
The average person had a reaction time of what, .2 seconds? That's while paying the most attention to a single task. If you're holding a gun, demanding cash and basicly not paying very close attention to the victim's move, the reaction time could be as much as .3+ seconds. That's more than enough time to get out of the line of fire and take control of the situation (given that you know how to do that, of course).
TheAnimal220 2 years ago
hahaha 2-3 seconds? man if you're that stupid don't even bother leaving a comment

He said .2. Get that?
Triplesod 2 years ago
@Triplesod Uh, "0.2 seconds" is "2/10ths" of a second.
Marlowann 1 year ago
a humans reaction time is way faster than that honestly in a situation like that if i was the criminal my adrenaline would be pumping and even while not paying attention
the reaction time would still be like .40-.70 sec.
your time was way off

You can test your gun disarm skills by practicing with a bb gun. Try to disarm your partner before he pulls the trigger and you get stung.
Plato86 2 years ago
True enough, a lot of dudes are found dead with their guns still in the holsters.
smackachu 2 years ago
Most skilled gunmen are taught not to hold the gun like that for this very reason. However supposing they do if you try this and miss you are very dead. I understand however that true Krav Maga is about life and death so I get it. It's just not very practical or safe for civilians.
-just my two cents

My dear boy have you ever handled a firearm? Do you know how long it takes to actualy fire a weapon vs moveing out of the line of fire? Have you ever faced down the barrel of one? I have and believe me it can and has been done, this is why these techniques are taught to military units and police organizations.

Thats simple,he is then forced into a retreat you now have control. He will not be able to aim nor fire with any acuracy once his hand begins to withdraw. You simply continue the side steping motion and close in to gain furthur control of the weapon.

SuperSneakySniper 3 years ago
no, you can hold a slide shut and if the gun is fired, it will cause it not to reload, jaming his weapon, this is why you see the guy "pretend" to re-rack the gun AFTER he takes it from the BG.

First time I have seen an instructor put the gun on the ground instead of give it right back to the attacker.
There have been insidents where people that train and give the gun or knife right back to the partner, do the same thing in a real attack.
Good attention to details on that one.

So, there mehtod of garping the wrist as show in "Human Weapon- Commando Krav Maga" on you tube is wrong?
Cheers,
brent52 4 years ago
Krav Maga is constantly changing, I have been trained in a combat style of Karv and this is the the correct way to do it. Grabbing the Weapon will also cause a malfunction unlike grabbing the wrist which will result in the weapon being able to fire many times. I also like that he uses strikes to the head. This is also very effective throwing your enemy off guard. This guy is good!!!
BSpears669 4 years ago
for him to have laerned from imi he would have to be almost 70 years old, and in krav maga you are taught to never immediately grab the gun in a face to face assault and instead grab the wrist rotate your hips to move your core out of the line of fire, pull the attacker, injur the attacker, and then disarm
kikerd2 4 years ago
I'm not sure where you get your information but thats not correct. Imi passed in 98. Also in the recent fight science show Amir shows exactly the same disarm. I think it's here on youtube as well. On top of that I have seen old footage of Imi doing it this way in demos. Eyal does it this way as well. So lets see if Imi and the two people given founders diplomas do it this way if it's not Krav Maga what is it?
KravCam 4 years ago 2
@KravCam i learned R.C.A.T redrect - control - attack - take away (disarm) love your videos help alot keep up the good work
campmichaela 1 year ago
you grab the wrist only with knives, in general its always better to gain control over the weapon rather than the wrist since the wrist can turn... you even grab the knife in certain cases.
by grabing the gun and twisting it you take advantage of the weakness of the wrist, loosening the grip.
in krav maga strength comes from leavrege and taking advantage of weak spots of the body. its not logical to rely on moving youself out of the line of fire when he can still aim.
yojostaif 4 years ago
@kikerd2 krav maga is somewhat of an umbrella term anyway, much like kali its changed and subdivided, although this is the original way regardless of that
IamHueGraves 1 year ago
@kikerd2 right or wrong this defence is too hard to pull off, you have to be really fast and accurate. There is a high chance the attacker pulls back if you miss the opportunity to catch the gun nozzle and even if you did catch the nozzle without complete control you are still within distance to the line of fire. Sorry but wouldnt recommend this move.
asyarief1 1 year ago
ok, although it's good technique, its not krav maga
kikerd2 4 years ago
Thats funny, it looks just the same as when Imi the founder of Krav Maga taught it to him.

Never give another man you weapon... That is why he didn't hand it back to him. In order to be able to do this is real life, you must practice like it at all times.

Jeice3065 4 years ago
Chances are the person isnt trained in firearms and just trys to mimic movies
unforgivensnake 4 years ago
Even if the gun is held with 2 hands and a vice grip, fact is, Krav is designed for something like that. After redirecting the pistols line of fire, you twist it back into the attacker, breaking his hold. Easy. Try Krav Maga's plucking technique, it's just explosive movement that breaks a grip or hold. It's about leverage, not always strength.
midgetswithmullets 4 years ago
How many times did he need to say "REDIRECT THE LINE OF FIRE" He makes a body defense and moves off angle. He makes it obvious to his students that you need to move out of the line of fire as the first move then move the muzzle of the firearm. Theres a reason where so many law enforcement and military organizations use this technique.
TacticalKnife 4 years ago
that needs to be said because it is SO IMPORTANT, cuz sure, you can grab his gun but if you dont get out of te line of fire you can still get fucked
JKrazyShroomy 4 years ago
It's seems the grab and moving away from the line of fire should be first. The rest is fine I guess.
