As for knowing how old it is, it's related to various dating methods, all of which must converge for a date to be agreed upon. Potassium-Argon dating is pretty common for evidence this old.
@watchWorld100 well you cant define the age of the amber itself but you can of the enclosed insects. so if the insect has lived 10.000 years ago for example the amber it´s trapped in cant be younger or older than that. besides that it takes quite a while to harden. also you can split and cut diamonds as well. common coal you can crumble with your bare hands as well. etc etc etc
