He was going to steal your money, your wallet and may have even stolen the shoes that you wear on your feet to walk about with. You didn't see him because the alarm scared him and he stealthily crept off so as to not get caught.

It does it when it gives you your card back too :) its so that incase someone forgets to take the card/money they'll know something of theirs is still sticking out of the ATM so they go 'HOMG *takes moneys/card*' then after a certain amount of beeps it sucks in the card/money again so no passers by can take it :] my mums mate left her money stickin out in an atm the other day and as soon as she walked away it went back in the machine :] x
