what people tend to forget, when companies "go down" they dont always disappear. a sufficiently large manufacturer (like a car assembly line) would get purchased for pennies, restructured, fat trimmed, and re-started pretty quickly. most of old workers would be rehired for very pragmatic reason - they dont need retraining. what will be lost is all the inefficiencies that caused the company to bankrupt. which is good news for everybody.

You just borrow $1 from one person to give $1 to another.

It will have a horrible effect on prices in a year or so. This is misleading. The CBO report says that the stimulus package (which will stimulate in the short term, but fails to deliver long term growth) is weak because of excessive tax cuts (which have low bang for the buck. They advice the use of welfare and government infrastructure spending.

Unfortunately, those do not correspond with economic research, not that you care about actual data. Tax cuts do not crowd out ANY private investment. You missed that part of the math. Look up the research paper by Andrew Mountford and Harald Uhlig. They are European economists whose research confirms every other serious quantitative study (try Blanchard and Perotti) that says you are LOST! Infrastructure is fine, welfare is bad! You just borrow $1 from one person to give $1 to another.

We are talking about this paper by the CBO. There's a lot of disagreement over the crowding out effect. The treasury view has been debunked. If the private economy is depressed, government spending doesn't cause crowding out. According to CBO, government spending is more effective and we were talking about the CBO report, remember? Welfare is almost better than infras. spending, because poor and unemployed have a high marginal propensity to spend, which means immediate stimulus.

The article, written by t.v. personality Wayne Allyn Root, says we should do NOTHING. He justifies his position by saying the bailout didn't work. That's an absurd, inaccurate rationale, and here's why:
Only half of the bailout money has been spent. So there's no way to measure whether or not it has worked. It's too early to make a judgment call. Secondly, it was George W. Bush's own Treasury secretary Hank Paulsen who FAILED to provide sufficient oversight. That proves Republican incompetence!

2. No money going to ICE. Seems like if ICE had more money there would be more busts at work places and this would create job openings.
3. No money going to E-verify.

How is this stimulus supposed to help the economy? I'm going to go through some of the ridiculous items on it: tens of billions for abortion both overseas and at home, 300 million for the study of bees, 200 million for contraception (which was taken off thank God), those are just three of the examples of how wasteful some of the items on this stimulus are. We waste money on sinful things when we should be helping other areas out.

High speed internet opens up a new large market to the internet, with the associated economic benefit from it.
Installing the internet cables will provide jobs for construction, high tech jobs, service jobs, tech support jobs, and of course, allow the internet companies to receive a boost in confidence due to the new users that will soon join the market.
Rural areas also vote Republican leaning, so it's hard to call this a pork barrel project.

This is all borrowed money. Once other countries get tired of buying our treasury bonds, what will happen? We tried Bush's Warpublican-based "tax-cut" policies, and the debt broke 10 trillion. EVERY time Democrats take office, the economy always improves. It's historical fact.
It's easy to be conservative when you've been sheltered from how harsh life is- and fail to see how it doesn't fit into conservative stereotypes like AirCargo resorted to.

You cannot call Bush a conservative and logic should tell you that you can't cut taxes without cutting spending. Ask your Mensa discussion group if when they find themselves in too much debt their solution is to get a cash advance on their credit card and run up more debt to pay their bills. And what is your definition of "improvement" for the economy. What are the benchmarks? Republican or Democrat, there's not much difference & we're on a slippery slope toward economic collapse.

I want to know why conservatives are always able to find such hot-but-incorrect women to speak in their favor, and the liberals always find the smart-but-ugly ones to speak for them.
Shelly is HOT. I disagree with her on many points, and think stopping the stimulus package would be devastating, but I respect her opinion. And, she's still smoking hot. Sizzling, even.

Just like Geo W Bush's bailout package, Obama's stimulus bill is in fact, nothing more than a 2nd massive devaluation of American people's currency. It will have a horrible effect on prices in a year or so. Wish I knew whether or not Obama really knows this and is just keeping quiet about it, or really believes that printing up 1 trillion dollars of worthless paper money and fiat bank credits is good for us. It's not. I think he knows it, but is just a spendthrift like the rest of them.

cwehkamp & AmbushMartyr, you're right - this vid was intended for ppl who already understand why the stimulus is bad, tho more info/links are in show notes.
Bottom line? It won't work. No matter how well-intentioned, my experience is that gov't 'stimulus' always fails on the implementation end. I looked pretty closely at the broadband part of the stimulus, it's an absolute waste of 9B.

This Shamulus package is losing support. Calls to Senators right now are 100 to 1 against it.
Let's keep up the pressure, Obama is also losing Democrats in the Senate, as well.
They don't want to wear the responsibility for this when it goes south, like TARP did.

History has shown stimulus packages don't work. Japan in the 1990's, and in the 1930's a recession was turned into a Great Depression thanks to govt intervention.
