I think the reason it is expensive is that its customers are very likely going to be cinematic effects studios and there aren't going to be many of them, so to make their profit they have to set their prices high.
$17,999 for software isn't exactly a huge investment from an industry perspective. Most 3D Engines will cost you easily 5 to 10 times that. Its a tool, that took hundreds of man-hours to build. If you expect them to do it for free, you have no concept of the complexity involved.
I think any software over 10K should follow the Unreal Engine's business model. It used to be 30K, but now it's free (you have to pay royalties if you sell the game you made.) Very nice for the little guys.

There is a windows version for MASSIVE SOFTWARE, there should be cracks available. Best way to google it.

100k of agents , my that's a lot.I hate that the training course for this software are only available in america.
at 22k ( plus support ) , it really breaks the bank but it looks like its really worth its price

May be its an AI software, also it can handle 100 000's of agents. where no other 3D software can handle.
