  • I've never seen a more talented group of people from the beginning of their career to present day.

  • Wow!!! This is amazing. I never would have guessed that they used to look like this. :D Awesome! Abney Park is AMAZING.

  • they are simply a good fucking band. quit bitching about the genre you pussies.

  • This is so hot it made me pregnant watching it *BLISS* :)

  • Actually, Bioshock is dieselpunk.

  • @ZootLives I THOUGHT SO! O_O

  • Love Abney Park, the first band I've heard in a long while that make every song on an album count, not just 4 or 5 good songs, then 9 or 10 "fillers". Genuinely amazing group.

  • Actually 'Steampunk' is anything that resembles Victorian Era Sci-Fi. Yes it's a sub-culture but it is not limited to clothing. There movies, games and even books done in this style. It was fathered by the great Jule Verne with such books as 'Clipper of the Clouds', 'From the Earth to the Moon', and '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. Examples of the style in games would be the Bioshock games, Skies of Arcadia, and the likes. A good example of a movie is, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

  • for those of us whos not up on the anything european music styles but what is 'steampunk'?

  • @goldeniris81 Its when you dress up like air pirates: Floating ships on zeppelins from late 19th and early 20th century. This is the type of music they would've played. It's a real subculture! Wild!

  • Absolute fav AP track! Quality tunage.

  • Moim zdaniem wyglądają o wieeele korzystniej w starym stylu niż teraz- na siłę steampunkowi....:( A muzykę i tak mają średnią...

  • Omg my fave abney park song!

  • Six people fear this when they hold their wives.

  • keyboardest looks pretty hot. shes a totaly milf with those pigtails ;D

  • @ShadowDwellerXXX She's married to the lead singer. XDDDDDD

  • @BlankPageEmperor i know XD. lucky basterd....

  • Wow... so weird to see them in regular clothing xD I love the steampunk look better though :D

  • Wow, i didn't recognize them in black :P

  • i think this is my favorite AP song honestly

  • @thenecrommancer Definitely one of mine.

  • I didn't even recognize them when the video started. I thought it was the wrong band. This has to be the first time I've seen them not in their steampunk getup.

  • @shohmyoh same here, LOL. I kind of went into shock....

    WHOAH!! Cap'n Robert...NOT in STEAMPUNK?!?

    Where's his goggles?!?!

It's a sort of sad longing,. lol...

  • I would love to isolate his voice on this track.

  • @AspergirlSithstress I like that Roberts voice sounds exactly as powerful in the live version as in the studio version, a very good singer...:)

  • I like AP Goth AND steampunk...Goth and steamunk go well together.

This is one of my favourites, very darkwave

@wynternight777 YES, Captain Robert=Voice of an angel!! Oh, I just melt. ♪♫

    @Kstone277 I agree

    @Shadowvff THAT. Is. BRILLIANT.

    Oh my goodness...He's adorable!!

  • pretty uniq sounding band

  • Stone-age video or what!?

  • This style is like the goth music I was first introduced to, love it.

  • thanks for posting this, really nice to see them in any guise...:) at any time.

  • thanks for posting this, really good to see them in any guise...:)

  • I have to say I'm surprised he sounds as good as he does live. I've noticed a lot of band vocalists just don't sound as good live as they do on their albums. Thankfully Abney park sounds good either way.

  • @Tanis2 He really does sound wonderful live; I love his voice.

  • The comments below raise a question in my mind: this video is from 2006, but I thought AP went steampunk in 2002. This being obviously wrong, when exactly did AP make the switch?

  • @secretagentmann9 2008's Lost Horizons was their first full on Steampunk album.

  • You know, I got into Abney Park after I saw a special on History Channel on Steampunk. I have to say, it's strange to see Captain Rob without his current style. I like their Steampunk look better, honestly.

  • @mgussow What special??

  • @AspergirlSithstress There was a special about the growing Steampunk movement. This was about... January of '09, or something like that. It went into Abney Park as an example and about custom Steampunk gear, how much it cost, etc. I'm still trying to find it.

  • So Kristina and Robert are the only original members?

  • You people have no idea do you? You're right, they're steampunk, have it your way. Are you happy now? Steampunk all the way. Its steampunk by the way. Whats goth anyway?

  • I am a proud SteamGoth, we do exist.

  • I don't think I'd really call this goth flavored. Steampunk is really cool (and this is great steampunk), but this isn't really goth flavored steampunk.

  • It really is. If you look at a lot of steampunk music and work, it tends to be a bit lighter. This has a definite dark tone to it, which is the essence of the goth aesthetic.

  • OMG, The bassist has...HAIR!!

  • hmm... i'm not usually into anything labeled goth but this is pretty good music

  • The idiot that posted this has been working with the band since 2002, when they most definitely referred to themselves as, and were considered to be, a Goth band

  • Okay, everybody, I met Robert in person last Saturday. Here is the real story in a nutshell:

    1) they started making music

    2) someone called them goth

    3) they said Goth? well, if you say so

    4) they realized they were uncomfortable with goth pretentiousness

    5) they reinvented themselves as steampunk

  • And judging from their videos, they started having a lot more fun ;)

  • @rkt739 Goth didnt become pretentious untill some idiot invented Industrial and "gothic metal". We were fine in the punk times.

  • @HawK047 Well, I don't have anything against goth-ness--just repeating it as I heard it. There's certainly quite a bit of pretentiousness now, though, unfortunately.

  • @rkt739 Sadly true. Although I'm not touching the fact which of what this band is, it does have darkwave influences.

I guess why most goths call this goth is because this is a form of music they havent had before, and they're aching for this new sound to bloom inside the goth subculture.

  • @rkt739 The post-punk and darkwave era was a marvel, bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke and The Cure came and gone. Ever since that died, the goth public has been getting lame Industrial and metal bands labelled as goth. This quality sounding band means the dawn of a new generation of goth music for that crowd.

I find it understandable. Most for the fact that I enjoy goth myself.

Wether this band is goth or not is a matter of opinion, same with steampunk.

  • @rkt739 Goth today is pretentious, but thats because alot of goths arent goth. Most true goths dress casually and listen to the old records. They are underground to even the pretentious goths.

  • @HawK047 That's good to hear. I was having a hard time reconciling the two impressions I was getting of goth-ness, but you've confirmed my suspicions of a sort of schism, as you might say.

  • @rkt739 Its hard to use the term goth now these days. I find it difficult to use the term, because stereotypes around it made it such a nasty and bad word.

What I can recommend though, check out some oldschool bands like Bauhaus and Joy Division. Maybe you might take a liking into it, since they really were somekind of turning point in the late 70's and the 80's.

  • @rkt739 whoah. Really? I didn't know that...that's cool.

  • @rkt739 actually Veen joined the band around 2006 and asked if everyone else was as sick of Hot Topic bullshit as she was, they agreed, she said "how about steampunk", they said "what's that", then she redesigned their clothes and props and did a bunch of concept art for the backstory and the rest is history.

  • @vebelfetzer I didn't know that. That's so awesome!!

  • Actually a certain amount of goths are steampunks so blah. the argument is not needed

  • I am going to end this discussion and say that Abney Park look good both in their stage clothing and in normal clothing :D.

Seriously. Cap'n Robert looks good in black.

  • @LillithDuskcutter stage clothing? you realise they dress like this offstage right?

  • Jesus Christ! Who ever the hell said they were goth is a complete moron. I'm there fucking neighbor, I would know if they were goth.

  • They weren't always steampunk.

  • goth? oh gimme a fucking break.

  • In reply to your now deleted comment "pre-steampunk? HAH! it's not a real musical genre. steampunk was a great literary genre but you got lame cosplayers now."Rock wasn't considered a "real" musical genre. Neither was Rap. Every musical genre, especially in its nascent stage, had its share of critics limited in their scope of what is acceptable. I can't talk about cosplay, as I don't do it. They do seem more imaginative than people dressing up as Darth Vader or ninjas. But to each their own.

  • Their cd said Gothic/Darkworld. That doesn't really sound proper but it was the genre that sounded most like their style I guess. Stupid Idea to categorize Bands anyway.

  • Yes, pre-steampunk. I have to say I enjoy their older "pre-SP" stuff, but I really like the SP version of AP. It's kind of like they were an undefined goth/industrial band in a sea of goth/industrial bands and now they have a focused 'indentity' carved out in a niche occupied by few other bands.

  • wow they changed alot... i like this song.. i prefer them steampunk tho.. it fits them so much better

  • yeah it doesnt feel right still an awesome song though.

  • this song was on the death of tragedy and they have reliesed on album after that. If they werent steampunk when they reliesed this song does that mean they have only been steampunk for one album???

  • they still look cool. but the song just doesnt feel the same.

  • Best bass line ever, it runs around in my head, so thanks for sharing :-) and such cool lyrics, love IT.

  • This is the first song I heard by Abney Park. I like it, but I prefer them as a steampunk band.

Actually, I've seen a video where they play this song ina a steampunk version, and it's great too.

  • What is steampunk in a musical context? I can't say I'm familiar with it.

  • Lol, wow, this is before they were steampunk, eh?

  • Yes.

  • @maxmin I can definitely see a lot of the same elements as their current steampunk style. I'd say it was more of a change of physical aesthetic than musical.

  • The keyboardist is mesmerizing, as is the lead vocal's voice.

  • It's pretty interesting to see them from before they were "steampunk". I remember seeing something where Capt Robert said that back then, they didn't really fit the "goth rock" label, but there wasn't any other description for them back then. I like the sound they have on this video! The girl on back-up harmonies does a great job!

  • I LOVE THIS BAND

cannot explain it better would not want to ..simple..

  • I enjoy this song. x]

  • Oh Abney Park, how I love you! It's so weird to see Captain Robert wearing black nail polish and no goggles!

  • Goth,Steampunk,Death,Black,Thrash,Nu,Heavy.Who cares as long as it's good music.

  • I agree!

  • It's not goth rock...

  • This song is Goth Rock, as were Abney Park at the time. This song/shoot pre-dates their Steampunk transformation by a good 3-4 years.

  • I dunno, I still don't think this feels goth. It's kind of grungy, maybe victorian goth but not really even that. Irregardless, it's still a good damn song.

  • goth or not, it's great.

  • irrespective = regardless. Irregardless isn't a word. check "Steve's Grammatical Observations: "Irregardless"" for full info. Grammar police on the patrol (...i know and i'm sorry). ...and the music is awesome!

  • Did you know what I meant?

Obviously, you did, therefore, it's a word. Deal with it.

  • actually in an interview capt robert sais that they were labeld as 'gothic' because steampunk or fantasy metal had not been created as subgenres yet =P

we all know there steampunk now and yeh it is strange without the uniforms...just like....normal...*shivers*

    keep it steampunk!!

  • My how things have changed for Abney Park since this video was shot! This still a cool song with a good melody, worth keeping! It looks like only 2 of the members in this video are still part of Abney Park. I listen to them often on Youtube.

  • hace poco que escuche este tema

    realmente me encanta!! :D

  • Ya know, i am trying to figure out what the song means...

    Here is what i get:

"Dance in black club in a clove stained trance"

Thats goth clubs, clove is a drug. The rest of the song just seems to be depicting goths... Am i right?

  • Halfapintfilms

cloves are basically just cigarettes that smell really good, haha.

a lot of goths smoke djarum blacks (a brand of cloves) so that their smokes match their outfit.

  • this song is just not long enough

  • goddamnit wtf this isnt wrong side by strapping young lad i need to learn to read shit

  • no, the name is correct but thats defanetly not devy doing the vocals.

  • of course, songs name is same, but its other song.

  • Is there a better combination that great music and steampunk?

  • No, no there isn't :)

  • i love abney park! i saw them live @ a fair it was ssssssssoooooooooo cool i was right up front!

  • Funny that people need to categorize their music.

I am mearly happy that they play their style, and I like it.

  • exactly. I think the categorizers need to shut up, listen and if they really must pigeonhole, well go get paid for it by working in a library.

  • Is it realy so important what genere are they? :) For example I don't care about it.

50% of bands plays music that should be clasified as a new sub-sub-sub genere... So in my opinion Abney Park just play "Abney Park" genere and that's all :)

  • fodaaaa

  • They aint goth, Its Industrial Steampunk

  • they are goth. Tempo, electronic influences, etc. That's goth. Period.

Then goth is somewhat always industrial (because of the prominent electronic influences)... it depends on the subgenre. This is the case.

and, imagery aside, there's nothing steampunk here. That's not even a music genre... (not because there's "punk" in it that makes it a music genre...)

So, I really like Abney Park... but to me they are just steampunk flavoured goth rock.

  • i like to call it Neo-Victorian post apocalyptic industrial goth rock opera

  • Comment removed

  • Sure, nowadays they're steampunk... they started out goth though, and this is definitely goth. What's in a name? They rock either way!

  • Damn straight. I wish people would get it right. -.-

  • was that a reply to me?

  • a wonderfull voice!

  • Man, this is such a great band. I wish that Nathaniel would've done the guitar a little more like this on the album version (its a bit more pronounced on here, i think.)

  • Indeed. I'd often thought that the first lyric went "I RUN on the wrong side of life...", as opposed to "...LIVE on the wrong side...". In any case, yes, they are a truly amazing band.

  • Wow!OO

  • amazing.

  • I love Abney Park! Please come to SF Bay area!

  • I'm doing everything i can to get them here. Now that Magdalene lives down here it's become more likely.

  • or maybe your ancestors graveyard got their name from them

  • why did they have to get there name from my ancisters graveyard that makes me mad

  • that's a silly reason to get mad lol.

  • any news on their arkansas show in september

  • It is, I think, 8pm on the 15th. Masque & Veil or whatnot. It's in Fayetteville.

  • They are amazing....core i wanna see them live.

  • They're definitely a pretty unique sound; and one I'm growing very fond of.

  • Did Jean-Paul just leave the band too?

Another question, are they working on a new album? I don't think I've even heard Magdalene yet, unless possibly in some live recording.

  • Yes, Jean-Paul will be leaving the band, but not until they find a replacement. They're all still on good terms, he just never intended to be in the band as a permanent member. He joined as a temp replacement for Krystof while his own band Civita was on hiatus. But now Civita is back in action he is moving on.

  • Robert and Nathan the guitarist have been working on new songs, but I'm not sure how far along they are in the actual recording process. I think they've got some demos done, but it will probably still be awhile befoire a new album is done.

  • Is that Magdalene with black hair, or did they have a different female vocalist at the time of this video?

  • Only Robert the singer and Kristina the Keyboardist remain from this version of the band. The female vocalist is Tracy, wife of the bassist in this video, Krystof.

  • I should be one of your back up dancers.

  • where could I find tabs for the guitar part of this song

  • I have seen pictures of the guitar this band uses it hasdecorative gears is that the same one that they used in this video

  • No, this shoot was over a year ago, and with their old guitarist. Robert did a make over of the new Guitarist's axe a couple of months ago.

  • I love this band!

  • Cool song!

  • Fantastic Live Band ! I wish they would put out a Live DVD.

  • That's the plan. I've been trying to set up a show for them here in San Francisco, and if that happens we'll shoot it, with the plan to release both the live show and the 8 song live in the studio set that this vid is from, along with various other extras.

  • The whole band is clearly shy but still stylish.

  • They're much more energetic in a true live situation. This was a much more controlled environment because we wanted the best possible sound quality, as we were inspired by the BBC's line of Live in Studio CD's.

  • Any chances for a show in Montreal/Quebec. :P?

  • such beauty

  • abney park is great. They sound so good live, I wish I could go to a performance.

  • Amazing!

  • love it.
