Love Abney Park, the first band I've heard in a long while that make every song on an album count, not just 4 or 5 good songs, then 9 or 10 "fillers". Genuinely amazing group.
Actually 'Steampunk' is anything that resembles Victorian Era Sci-Fi. Yes it's a sub-culture but it is not limited to clothing. There movies, games and even books done in this style. It was fathered by the great Jule Verne with such books as 'Clipper of the Clouds', 'From the Earth to the Moon', and '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. Examples of the style in games would be the Bioshock games, Skies of Arcadia, and the likes. A good example of a movie is, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
@goldeniris81 Its when you dress up like air pirates: Floating ships on zeppelins from late 19th and early 20th century. This is the type of music they would've played. It's a real subculture! Wild!
I didn't even recognize them when the video started. I thought it was the wrong band. This has to be the first time I've seen them not in their steampunk getup.
I have to say I'm surprised he sounds as good as he does live. I've noticed a lot of band vocalists just don't sound as good live as they do on their albums. Thankfully Abney park sounds good either way.
The comments below raise a question in my mind: this video is from 2006, but I thought AP went steampunk in 2002. This being obviously wrong, when exactly did AP make the switch?
You know, I got into Abney Park after I saw a special on History Channel on Steampunk. I have to say, it's strange to see Captain Rob without his current style. I like their Steampunk look better, honestly.
@AspergirlSithstress There was a special about the growing Steampunk movement. This was about... January of '09, or something like that. It went into Abney Park as an example and about custom Steampunk gear, how much it cost, etc. I'm still trying to find it.
You people have no idea do you? You're right, they're steampunk, have it your way. Are you happy now? Steampunk all the way. Its steampunk by the way. Whats goth anyway?
I don't think I'd really call this goth flavored. Steampunk is really cool (and this is great steampunk), but this isn't really goth flavored steampunk.
It really is. If you look at a lot of steampunk music and work, it tends to be a bit lighter. This has a definite dark tone to it, which is the essence of the goth aesthetic.
The idiot that posted this has been working with the band since 2002, when they most definitely referred to themselves as, and were considered to be, a Goth band
@HawK047 Well, I don't have anything against goth-ness--just repeating it as I heard it. There's certainly quite a bit of pretentiousness now, though, unfortunately.
@rkt739 Sadly true. Although I'm not touching the fact which of what this band is, it does have darkwave influences.
I guess why most goths call this goth is because this is a form of music they havent had before, and they're aching for this new sound to bloom inside the goth subculture.
@rkt739 The post-punk and darkwave era was a marvel, bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke and The Cure came and gone. Ever since that died, the goth public has been getting lame Industrial and metal bands labelled as goth. This quality sounding band means the dawn of a new generation of goth music for that crowd.
I find it understandable. Most for the fact that I enjoy goth myself.
Wether this band is goth or not is a matter of opinion, same with steampunk.
@rkt739 Goth today is pretentious, but thats because alot of goths arent goth. Most true goths dress casually and listen to the old records. They are underground to even the pretentious goths.
@HawK047 That's good to hear. I was having a hard time reconciling the two impressions I was getting of goth-ness, but you've confirmed my suspicions of a sort of schism, as you might say.
@rkt739 Its hard to use the term goth now these days. I find it difficult to use the term, because stereotypes around it made it such a nasty and bad word.

@rkt739 actually Veen joined the band around 2006 and asked if everyone else was as sick of Hot Topic bullshit as she was, they agreed, she said "how about steampunk", they said "what's that", then she redesigned their clothes and props and did a bunch of concept art for the backstory and the rest is history.
In reply to your now deleted comment "pre-steampunk? HAH! it's not a real musical genre. steampunk was a great literary genre but you got lame cosplayers now."Rock wasn't considered a "real" musical genre. Neither was Rap. Every musical genre, especially in its nascent stage, had its share of critics limited in their scope of what is acceptable. I can't talk about cosplay, as I don't do it. They do seem more imaginative than people dressing up as Darth Vader or ninjas. But to each their own.
Their cd said Gothic/Darkworld. That doesn't really sound proper but it was the genre that sounded most like their style I guess. Stupid Idea to categorize Bands anyway.
Yes, pre-steampunk. I have to say I enjoy their older "pre-SP" stuff, but I really like the SP version of AP. It's kind of like they were an undefined goth/industrial band in a sea of goth/industrial bands and now they have a focused 'indentity' carved out in a niche occupied by few other bands.

I gotta say, i am totally pro labeling music. As for subcultures here is what i have to say They are art. In 3 forms. Music Fashion and visual art. Like this: Goth Music: Dark Rock Fashion: Dark Clothes Visual art: Dark drawings of morbid topics. Rivethead: Music: Machinery noise Fashion: Worker and millitary style Visual art: Metal sculpture and machinery This works for every subculture, and it is the easiest way to understand them, as apposed to the stereotypes of personalities.
Is it realy so important what genere are they? :) For example I don't care about it.
50% of bands plays music that should be clasified as a new sub-sub-sub genere... So in my opinion Abney Park just play "Abney Park" genere and that's all :)
Man, this is such a great band. I wish that Nathaniel would've done the guitar a little more like this on the album version (its a bit more pronounced on here, i think.)
Indeed. I'd often thought that the first lyric went "I RUN on the wrong side of life...", as opposed to "...LIVE on the wrong side...". In any case, yes, they are a truly amazing band.
Yes, Jean-Paul will be leaving the band, but not until they find a replacement. They're all still on good terms, he just never intended to be in the band as a permanent member. He joined as a temp replacement for Krystof while his own band Civita was on hiatus. But now Civita is back in action he is moving on.
Robert and Nathan the guitarist have been working on new songs, but I'm not sure how far along they are in the actual recording process. I think they've got some demos done, but it will probably still be awhile befoire a new album is done.
Only Robert the singer and Kristina the Keyboardist remain from this version of the band. The female vocalist is Tracy, wife of the bassist in this video, Krystof.
That's the plan. I've been trying to set up a show for them here in San Francisco, and if that happens we'll shoot it, with the plan to release both the live show and the 8 song live in the studio set that this vid is from, along with various other extras.
They're much more energetic in a true live situation. This was a much more controlled environment because we wanted the best possible sound quality, as we were inspired by the BBC's line of Live in Studio CD's.
I've never seen a more talented group of people from the beginning of their career to present day.

Mantaraykid 3 years ago 6
they are goth. Tempo, electronic influences, etc. That's goth. Period.
Then goth is somewhat always industrial (because of the prominent electronic influences)... it depends on the subgenre. This is the case.
and, imagery aside, there's nothing steampunk here. That's not even a music genre... (not because there's "punk" in it that makes it a music genre...)
So, I really like Abney Park... but to me they are just steampunk flavoured goth rock.

Sure, nowadays they're steampunk... they started out goth though, and this is definitely goth. What's in a name? They rock either way!

Did Jean-Paul just leave the band too?
Another question, are they working on a new album? I don't think I've even heard Magdalene yet, unless possibly in some live recording.
kablamo9999 4 years ago
Yes, Jean-Paul will be leaving the band, but not until they find a replacement. They're all still on good terms, he just never intended to be in the band as a permanent member. He joined as a temp replacement for Krystof while his own band Civita was on hiatus. But now Civita is back in action he is moving on.

Robert and Nathan the guitarist have been working on new songs, but I'm not sure how far along they are in the actual recording process. I think they've got some demos done, but it will probably still be awhile befoire a new album is done.

Is that Magdalene with black hair, or did they have a different female vocalist at the time of this video?
ybnormal70x7 4 years ago
Only Robert the singer and Kristina the Keyboardist remain from this version of the band. The female vocalist is Tracy, wife of the bassist in this video, Krystof.

I should be one of your back up dancers.

socrates2511 4 years ago
No, this shoot was over a year ago, and with their old guitarist. Robert did a make over of the new Guitarist's axe a couple of months ago.

Fantastic Live Band ! I wish they would put out a Live DVD.
MacDude4 5 years ago
That's the plan. I've been trying to set up a show for them here in San Francisco, and if that happens we'll shoot it, with the plan to release both the live show and the 8 song live in the studio set that this vid is from, along with various other extras.
maxmin 5 years ago
The whole band is clearly shy but still stylish.
Davoid81 5 years ago
They're much more energetic in a true live situation. This was a much more controlled environment because we wanted the best possible sound quality, as we were inspired by the BBC's line of Live in Studio CD's.
maxmin 5 years ago
Any chances for a show in Montreal/Quebec. :P?
