  • How about using a Red Wiggler?

  • Haven't heard of that lure in Australia?

    Cheers Greg

  • I found this video by searching for " trolling in the deep" O_O

  • Good lure for Mackerel and gets down nice and deep, Highly recommended,

    Cheers Greg

  • Mackerel will hit poppers and stickbaits, but alot rarer. bibbed lures are better when trolling for spanish and other mackerel lures. It's worth trolling a popper as well and also Giant Trevally if around will also have a go,

    Cheers Greg

  • would a top water lure work for mackerel?

  • Thanks to u I have more of a game plan for my trip in July thanks for all your advice

  • Will the xrap magnum 30 be okay in surf? I also picked up some 2 and 3 oz minnow lookin things with a treble at the end. R these what u mean by slugs

  • Give it a go, but your casting distance may be a problem, These lures are fairly light, They sound like the slugs, Metal and heavier lures which can be cast alot further, and with a high speed retrieve are great for mackerel and other pelagic fish species you'll find in the surf,

    good luck fishing, cheers Greg

  • Xraps magnums are an awesome mackerel lure as well, and a new video coming soon with a 17 Kg Spanish (King) mackerel the other day on a Xrap 20 magnum. With a big bib, they will dive deeper, best bet for the surf would be metal slugs/spinners more weight and can cast further, with a high speed retrieve. Talk to your local tackle shop and they'll know the best lure for your local species, and good luck with your mackerel,

    Cheers Greg

  • I just bought two xrap magnums , they both can run to 30 feet I'd rather the ones that run 15 but they were alot smaller than I wanted and lighter , I got the thirty foot ones to be able to cast further and for the size, bit I'm afraid that the magnum will run to deep for surf fishing, never used this lure like I said I'm new to this, so is there anyway to control the depth of the lure or is it gunna always run 30 foot deep?

  • Btw the main thing caught at oak island nc are king mackerel. So what kinda lures do u recommend in the surf

  • Your king mackerel are the same as our Spanish Mackerel. You'd want a heavier lure and a metal slug, spinner will have more weight to cast further, and with a high speed retrieve should work. Still check with a local tackle shop and see what local techniques and lures they use in the area you want to work,

    Cheers Greg

  • I'm going to be doing alot of surf fishing in July , at oak island nc. I've never done much salt water fishing period. I have a really nice Penn with like a 10 foot rod. I just don't know about how to catch them and what kinda rigs and lures, any advice whould help. Im wondering I the lures showed here would work ok for surf fishing

  • You want a good casting rod in the surf, and 10 ft would be a good start. Probably not the best lure for casting. check with your local tackle shop and what fish you are after, they'd know the best lures to use. I would recommend a heavier metal spinner or slug and high speed retrieve through the surf, but local knowledge would be best,

    Cheers Greg

  • yes these lures sure are great as well as the Rapala X-rap Magnum 20 and 30

  • Xraps are pretty awesome and a definate must have mackerel lure for sure,

    Cheers Greg

  • I only used Pioneer lure same color and can dive 3-4 meter... or 16 feet under water.. but never caught any mackerel hehehe....

  • Red and White, possibly one of the best colour combinations and a must have, always run one lure with these colour combo's in your trolling spread, Mackerel can't help themselves,

    Cheers Greg

  • it can swim below the water about 4-6 meter?

  • Would dive to 20 feet or 6 metres, Always good to have a mix of depths of lures for trolling for Mackerel. Get alot on the deep divers,

    Cheers Greg

  • I picked up one yeturday also with a new penn international v 2 speed over head for $700 for macrekl, and got 2 spottys and one spanish on it this morning within 30mins of getting to the spot

  • Good result, and a top mackerel lure, Get down nice and deep too,

    Cheers Greg

  • I picked up a slightly smaller sized downsider at Rays Outdoors on special 4 only $6- u think it will work as well on Maks as ur larger model?

  • Sounds like a bargain, top lure and the smaller ones should work well as well, Still after bigger lures, and like the real deep divers,

    cheers Greg

  • @Reefari Other Mackeral lures which i have heard work well are the halco Max lures and the big halco tremblers.

  • Top lures thye Halco lazer Pro's and the tremblers work well as well. Make sure you check out my favourite lures video, heaps of great mackerel lures in there, and the Rapala X rap Magnums are awesome too,

    Cheers Greg

  • The Manns Stretch Giganticus. It dives about 15 meters and it is nearly 46 centimeters in length.

  • That sounds wicked, will google it up and try get one, we troll wolf herring for baits, up to 60 cm's long and they get smashed all the time. So big baits/lures should get the bigger Mackerel,

    Cheers Greg

  • Now that's a lure, gonna get one!! the 40's look good too,

    Cheers Greg

  • @Reefari Yeah man, the work awesome here in the U.S.

  • Thanks, looks awesome, going to get one, they are dear but,

    Cheers Greg

  • we got something down here in the med called anguilón- It's a hard rubber fish with a wagging tail that's pretty resistant to quite a few hits. The advantage: It's super cheap. It's great when the bite is furious 'cause it has only 1 hook. The only difference is that your makerels are quite abit bigger than ours. The other advantage is that it can be easily weighted down and it catches loads of different species. Send me a plane ticket and I'll show you how it works

  • Thanks for the feedback, will google it up as well, Our Spanish mackerel have razor sharp teeth, and make sure work of anything plastic, Sounds good but,

    cheers Greg

  • @Reefari the brand raglou is a better place to look on youtube. I can't think of any other cost saving measure you could make than that, if I do I'll drop you a line. I did put a kastmater at the end of my lure which gave it a new wiggle. They dont hit the lure but the kastmaster which is made of chrome. It's an american brand

  • Thanks I'll have a look, the manns 50 sounds awesome as well,

    Cheers Greg

  • did you catch it by trawling?

  • The Mackerel at the end were caught trolling, Caught about 6 that morning in less than hour, but the Downsider was going off,

    Cheers Greg

  • @lisolangka thanks!

  • Have you tried the Stiffy Mackeral Maulers yet, we just got some today - they are big lures and hopefully they will work on the macks.

  • Haven't seen those ones yet, Also got another video coming with my favourite lures, Heaps of good mackerel lures in there,

    Cheers Greg
