0:20 I thought the security guard was going to join in when he started clapping. Pity he didn't, 'cos with 5 of you, you could have made a 2 on 3 pyramid.
Security people can order you off the premises they are patrolling without reason. Stores/malls are private property and people do not have a right to protest and disturb the other shoppers.
That said, I do believe puppy mills are disgusting and should be shut down but you're not going to get very far if you keep getting arrested for trespassing.
They should have stood on public property outside with signs and protested THERE, not inside on private property.
Wow, 2 years later you guys are still watching this. I love the comments supporting me and my coworkers. Just to clarify for those of you that don't know or are just to dumb to know, under most if not all state laws a private citizen (which security officer's are) van make a citizens arrest if a crime is committed in their presents. in this situation the crime that was committed was criminal trespass.
I have read things and watched video's about pet stores and their abuse toward the animals they sell or buy, and I agree with protesting about it but don't you wan't to just buy your animal and get it out of the bad enviornment instead of starting all kinds of trouble for everyone by over filling an animal shelter? I just purchased a gerbil from a pet store and he looked horrible before I took him out of the enviornment he was in, now I'm sitting here watching him run around his aquarium happy.
@dylanhelmer and all you other morons. Malls are private property. They are private property that is open to the public. Yes they is a difference. Private property is a property that is owned by a private owner. Public property is owned by the city. GET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT YOU IDIOT. By the way. I do not regret what I did to Rossell. I would do it again with pleasure.
if I see something like this, I would not be a angry shopper and there's nothing i could do. they said about puppy mills, I don't want to know and I hope they don't do that to us.
3 years ago I slam into a sexy lady walking by, and I said I'm sorry and walk away, i do hope the security didn't find out about it. I rather not do that again anymore.
I really didn't want to go to a mall, I just go there real quickly for a meal and left that is a way to avoid any attention like the security guy. If a hot chick says to me that she is not interested in me or something i just ran off as quickly as possible so I won't cause trouble.
I'm so proud of people who are willing to stand up for what they believe. These animals can't fight back, but we can. Thank you folks for being willing to do this! Even if it means getting arrested!

You guys are making me more famous everytime you watch this video. Matthew Rossell wasn't arrested for protesting, he was arrested for Criminal Trespass because he was told 3 times before this that he could not protest in the mall (Private property). He came back and we arrested him. And using his daughter as a shield so we wouldn't arrest him everytime. And he wasn't some bystander who just spoke up. His wife is the ugly cheerleader who approached him after we took him.

Well done the Cheerleaders and great to hear Scamps no longer exist. The sale of puppies should be banned from all pet stores! People need to be made aware that most puppies bought from pet stores come from puppy mills where breeding bitches and stud dogs endure life long suffering, trapped in tiny cages, breeding litters until their bodies can't take any more. Our faithful companions deserve much better! Well done to everyone who fights to try and end this cruel trade.
The two (2) security guards who arrested the gentleman for speaking I HOPE were charged with FALSE ARREST. They CANNOT detain or take anyone into custody in this regard. There was NO Crime committed and they need to be sued and have their Security License REVOKED!
Security Officers do not have arrest power to arrest someone for Tresspassing (at least in Florida). The only case when a Security Officer can detain someone is for Retail Theft and there are very specific restrictions on those detainments. Only sworn Law Enforcement Officers can make arrests (with an exception for citizens arrests with specific limitations). Trespassing is not a crime unless the persons were warned first. They didn't arrest the cheerleaders..why not?

it was not Florida, but I only can speak to florida law and most other states laws should be pretty similar. To answer your question, Trespassing After Warning is an arrestable offense, Yes. However, only a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer has the arrest power to make such an arrest NOT a Security Officer. What you don't see and you don't know is that the idiot that got tackled had been previouslt excluded from the mall. He deserved to go to jail. Great job security, you guys are great.
obviously you are going on hearsay. He had NOT been excluded from the mall. He had been told that he WOULD be excluded from the mall if he did this. But exclusion does not include arrest. They were not supposed to do this. The mall admits this.
get your facts straight before typing your lame ideals.
On one hand, I kinda feel bad for the mall security. Even though they seem like such a-holes, I expect that they're probably just doing their job, and that they might risk losing their job if they decided to look the other way. It seems like the noble thing to do (to ignore the protest and allow it to continue), but I'm sure it's probably a difficult decision for them to make. At least, I hope so. I like to think they're not mindless, emotionless drones. :p
Anyone one that complains about what their doing is in my opinion WRONG because their out there trying to make a DIFFERENCE for animals and not only for animals but for the planet also because I'm sure their all vegetarians or vegans. what if the mall were selling pornography or devices to harm or torture people ? puppy mills are an atrocity. It's time people got a little more educated about puppy mills.
I support what the mall officers did. "Stand for Security". I have a question posted about this topic on yahoo answers, every1 is more then welcome to give their opinion
Public Property? I'm sorry it's a MALL. It may be a place for the public but I assure you it is owned by someone who's agenda is to make money. A protest doesn't make money. Your protest in a mall gives you at least Tresspassing and Disturbing the Public charges.
Also I agree puppy mills are bad but I would rather see a puppy mill puppy go to a good home than be tortured or destroyed because no one bought it.
The puppies scamps sells have often later been put down due to parvo and other serious illnesses that kill a dog. One of the many complications of puppy mills. Unsanitary and horrible conditions.
STOP PUPPY MILLS
start by not supporting them.
don't support scamps, or you encourage puppy mills to continue.
duh.
to your second post, the answer is no.
You have now continued on to borderline insane in your grasp for straws comment.
you obviously know little to nothing of demos or protests.
Your comment was so insaine I don't even know where to begin to point out the flaws in your logic. The only part that made sense was about the coplications at puppy mills.
You obviously know little to nothing of the real world or the people who inhabit it.
Talk to your doctor about getting some lithium carbonate.
Has anyone in this thread actually thought what would even happened to the puppies in the puppy farm if no one bought em... just a thought...
btw... socialism doesnt exist. Just fads and (lame) styles. Just people like you and I that believe in something that niether of us agree to. deal with it. Worry about the water crysis in africa, or hunger and homeless in our own country. You hippies make me sick with your self centered views on reality, with "nature." You wake up, people are dying.
most of them are sick and need extensive vet care upon being boght and brought home, and sometimes put down because they are way too sick and the vet is unable to save them.
By buying an animal from a store that gets their animals from horrible conditions such as seen in puppy mills, you are supporting the puppy mills.
stop the demand, end the supply.
It's sad, yes. These animals need to go to homes where they can be cared for, not stores that profit off them, sick or not.
Lol, well it was done. They were standing up for something they believed in and expressing it in a not-so-violent way. If four twelve year olds are allowed to stand on a bench and sing a "Christmas carol" about how the Muslims in this country should be hung and beat in a mall near me...I don't think a few people voicing their beliefs in a public mall should be hated against. ;[

Private Property my ass.....you invite the public to shop at your corrupt stores and then if some rejects what your doing....we'll kick your ass...and shop here again....wtf.....this isn't socialist American.....wake up!!!
So you have a party of the neigbors and one comes over and starts chanting and screaming in your house about how they don't like your car it destroys the enviroment. By your logic you would let them run around your house and scream and yell because you invited the public in, right? You would be cool with them pissing off the people you really wanted there and would really sit and do nothing because as you say "Private Property my ass"?

Socialism's fundamental principles are centered on a critique of this concept, stating, among other things, that the cost of defending property is higher than the returns from private property ownership, and that even when property rights encourage the property-holder to develop his property, generate wealth, etc., he will only do so for his own benefit, which may not coincide with the benefit of other people or society at large.

The policy on touching is only for insurance purposes. Legally, they had full authority to pick him up by the hair in one hand, the hind quarters in the other, bring the twixt together and toss him out on his head.
Private property can be defended by any means necessary.
Their manual doesn't stand for anything. The LAW does.
ACTUALLY, it isn't by any means necessary is not accurate.
Defend private property from what?
A man who was leaving upon being told to do so?
THAT is what was happening. Matt had simply walked over to his partner and child and told them it was time to go when the other mall cop took it upon himself to go beyond means necessary.
As said before, do a bit of research before opening your notebook.

BTW... Its not that they arrested them for protest, but under the public disturbance and trespassing. No matter what you do, they will lose unless they took it outside. Hand out fliers, cheer, have signs... OUTSIDE THE FRIGGIN MALL DOORS. A mall is not a park that is owned by the city.. its owned by an owner that wants to make money, if they didn't get written permission to do that... its trespassing. Its a building, not a park... its not public property. they ALLOW you INSIDE
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you all are retarded... yes there is protest, yes its brave and yes... it is trespassing on private property... SOMEONE OWNS THE DAMN MALL. The owner, or what not would have gotten a phone call about this and if there has been charges, its his responsability to press them. If they wanted to protest, they should have done it legally OUTSIDE in the parking lot. True, they could have handled it better, but its still trespassing and that will lose your case in court. f.y.i.. a mall is not a park.
Awesome. Period. People can complain about "Oh well, they were trespassing. They can't do that. Y'all are ignorant." Etc, etc.
Oh well. :] They did. They weren't trespassing. It was a peaceful protest, until the security guard who takes his job way to seriously got physical. Calling this ignorance is, in fact, an extremely ignorant statement.
These girls are so cute. ;3 Good for you, having the goods to do something such as this. Same for that poor guy who was tackled.. :[
its private property they could throw people out for wearing green shirts if they want to. when you are in a store or mall you have no rights other than what the owner of that facility grants you.
I can't believe they tackled this guy. I'm thinking about writing a letter to the lloyd center about this! Annd guess what! I'm not buying from scamps!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They can chant all they want about "public property", but it's a flat out lie.
This mall has an owner, and it's not "the public".
They should have all been removed in handcuffs for disturbing the peace, and trespassing after being asked to leave by those with the owner's authority.
Mindless chanting drones rarely understand the law, and how their protests aren't legal on privately owned property.
If you think that this mall is not private property, then by your thinking, we would be able to protest your sorry ass in your living room. think about it.....

No, I just meant those kids who had to be shielded by their parents. That seemed disruptive of the peace and the bad language being yelled out when the guy gets arrested. Not for kids. Not cool.
Having been involved in a mall protest before, it is true that it is usually private property and they can ask you to leave and if you don't it's tresspassing...
HOWEVER
My understanding also is that private security have no more legal authority to grab your body than an ordinary citizen doing a "citizen's arrest," which means I think it is legal to defend yourself against someone who isn't a police officer just grabbing you. Anyone know for sure?
Wow, you sound like an amazing person. I hope you enjoy your sheltered, sad life. Do you have any sort of conscious? Or, did you not really understand what the video was about? I think it may be the later...

This guy deserved what he got. This was an illegal protest. Read the constitution people. You have the right to assemble peacefully. And your right to free speach goes out the door when you are someone else's property. The owner of that property can tell you what you can an can not say. Ask you lawyer hippies. YAY, mall security
Actually it's not that simple. Since 1980 it's been left up to the state courts and based off the state constitutions. Depends on your state boyo. In CA this would be completely legal. In OH it would be illegal. Oregon is a little stickier. Prior to 2000 it would have been legal...now probably not...though a case appealed to the OR Supreme Court right now might have a good chance of getting Stranahan v. Fred Meyer, Inc. reversed and opening malls once again to free speech.
Actually I've already talked to the mall itself and they are unhappy with the way things went down. No, the security had no grounds to tackle Matt the way they did. The most that should have happened was that everyone was escorted out of the mall.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And i just heard someone say that they were on public property. Oh they are so wrong. A mall is private property that is open to the public. Big difference

Since they arrested the dude, they should have arrested the chicks as well. However, it's blatantly obvious the chicks spend all their money at Hot Topic, so even though they are calling for the demise of one store, their support of another more successful mall hot spot trumps any need for arrest. Dude shoulda shopped at Hot Topic. Then at least his dissent would have been manufactured and mall approved! Kinda like the puppies.
actually, you are extremely presumptuous in your comment about Hot Topic.
as one of the cheerleaders (no, I wasn't here due to prior engagements), I know for a fact this is very untrue. My own stuff comes much from Goodwill and the bins (goodwill as well) and other used resources.
Of course, you wouldn't know anything about that would you?
Pardon me, madam. I had no idea you were such the thriftster. Perhaps we could fetch a bit fare at the local Panera? I hear the scones are delightful after they've been in the dumpster.

Think People, Think!

HisssMeow 3 years ago
Your comment was so insaine I don't even know where to begin to point out the flaws in your logic. The only part that made sense was about the coplications at puppy mills.
You obviously know little to nothing of the real world or the people who inhabit it.
Talk to your doctor about getting some lithium carbonate.
PsychoDaveFilms 3 years ago
flaws in MY logic?
I'm not the one with "psycho" as the beginning of my self given name.
And you tell me to talk to my doctor.
You obviously pay no attention when a place like scamps is exposed, ON TV even, for the sick animals they profit off of.
You read what you read and draw a lame conclusion.
Open your eyes.
HisssMeow 3 years ago
Has anyone in this thread actually thought what would even happened to the puppies in the puppy farm if no one bought em... just a thought...
btw... socialism doesnt exist. Just fads and (lame) styles. Just people like you and I that believe in something that niether of us agree to. deal with it. Worry about the water crysis in africa, or hunger and homeless in our own country. You hippies make me sick with your self centered views on reality, with "nature." You wake up, people are dying.
Pen2penguin 3 years ago
Pen2Penguin,
most of them are sick and need extensive vet care upon being boght and brought home, and sometimes put down because they are way too sick and the vet is unable to save them.
By buying an animal from a store that gets their animals from horrible conditions such as seen in puppy mills, you are supporting the puppy mills.
stop the demand, end the supply.
It's sad, yes. These animals need to go to homes where they can be cared for, not stores that profit off them, sick or not.
HisssMeow 3 years ago
Lol, well it was done. They were standing up for something they believed in and expressing it in a not-so-violent way. If four twelve year olds are allowed to stand on a bench and sing a "Christmas carol" about how the Muslims in this country should be hung and beat in a mall near me...I don't think a few people voicing their beliefs in a public mall should be hated against. ;[

The LAW does.
kauboy9816 3 years ago
where the hell are you from?

Its a building, not a park... its not public property. they ALLOW you INSIDE

you all are retarded... yes there is protest, yes its brave and yes... it is trespassing on private property...
Pen2penguin 3 years ago
Awesome.

There are more productive ways to protest and get your word out than disturbing the peace.
BigMikeLewis 3 years ago
but how effective is that?
no peace was really even disrupeted.
It's not like they had bull horns, threatening or intimidating customers and/or the store.
No. They were cheering.
Something less intrusive, more positive, and definitely not intimidating.
Radical Cheerleading is extremely effective in carrying the message.
Especially around here.

No, I just meant those kids who had to be shielded by their parents. That seemed disruptive of the peace and the bad language being yelled out when the guy gets arrested. Not for kids. Not cool.
BigMikeLewis 3 years ago
just to let you know, most of the voices yelling, even cheering on and clapping prior to matt getting tackled... they were mall customers.
it was not just the protesters, who have no control over what the public does or how they react.
HisssMeow 3 years ago 7
I've read that malls have replaced the town square and that there are some protected forms of activity there because of that designation.
That rental cop was HOPING a male would take part, because he wasn't about to get in a female's face.
Notice how quickly he did that once the male opened his mouth.
I'd eat outta dumpsters before I'd work mall security.
notoriouskelly 3 years ago 13
Yeah, I though so too, the guy did the least noise, was a little more than talking and HE got tackled.
security staff looked like bullys and little else.
Hope it goes better next time. Cheerleading for a protest seems like a really neat way to get positive attention.

befreier1 3 years ago 15
Having been involved in a mall protest before, it is true that it is usually private property and they can ask you to leave and if you don't it's tresspassing...
HOWEVER
My understanding also is that private security have no more legal authority to grab your body than an ordinary citizen doing a "citizen's arrest," which means I think it is legal to defend yourself against someone who isn't a police officer just grabbing you. Anyone know for sure?

This guy deserved what he got. This was an illegal protest. Read the constitution people. You have the right to assemble peacefully. And your right to free speach goes out the door when you are someone else's property. The owner of that property can tell you what you can an can not say. Ask you lawyer hippies. YAY, mall security
baseballump123 3 years ago
Actually it's not that simple. Since 1980 it's been left up to the state courts and based off the state constitutions. Depends on your state boyo. In CA this would be completely legal. In OH it would be illegal. Oregon is a little stickier. Prior to 2000 it would have been legal...now probably not...though a case appealed to the OR Supreme Court right now might have a good chance of getting Stranahan v. Fred Meyer, Inc. reversed and opening malls once again to free speech.
gcsickboy 3 years ago
It's all about the OR Constitution...not the U.S. Constitution kiddo so you should probably just keep your mouth shut for a bit.
gcsickboy 3 years ago
Actually I've already talked to the mall itself and they are unhappy with the way things went down. No, the security had no grounds to tackle Matt the way they did. The most that should have happened was that everyone was escorted out of the mall.
