  • I always thought this song sounded like Greg was singing about a meth addiction.

  • i used to be SO IN LOVE with Greg Lake!! I would watch a woodstock type concert in the 10th grade. It was called California Jams. Ozzy and everyone was there, but I stayed up late, every night, just to hear Greg sing this**

  • Perfection

  • I saw ELP 4 TIMES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, THEY NEVER DISSAPOINTED. THEY WERE AND STILL REMAIN MY ALL TIME FAVS

  • what production these guys had!

  • Gレイクの声に、KOされました!

so still, liberal douchebags, dissenters, occupiers, obamaites who create a scene, have no clue. Col. Mustard with the Led Pipe in the Study, mofo!

  • if you didnt like it why did you respond so many times fool!!!\

  • Brain Salad Surgery. You have to love the creativity back then. Makes most music today sound dull and boring.

  • I first heard ELP back in 69 And ever since The sound has changed my perception . Of how I hear music now . I listen ! Thanks for posting Long live the Emerson Lake and Palmer .

  • So ELP would be called HELP?

  • Awesome album and putting H.R. Giger on the cover just pushed it over the top for me. Thanks for posting!

  • When I was a little, I thought he said "Still.... It's a meatball."

So my sisters and I called it the meatball song..

  • @Jackiloopina It doesn't sound like that at all lol.

  • When I saw carl Palmer at the Rock-n-Roll Hall OF Fame a few weeks ago , Carl said that hte Jimi Hendrix story is not true . I was lucky to have him sign my Brain Salad Surgery gatefold LP >

  • @jmms429 Have you seen Greg Lake's live performance of this song; 1974 Cal Jam? If not, check it out.

  • @DeNee7777 That was truly great...thanks : )

  • According to people in the know,Jimi Hendrix was preparing to join the trio at the time of hi demise. We really missed out there.cdb59

  • Always beautifully haunting. Been obsessed with it for a couple of days now . Even the album cover is interesting : )

  • @jmms429 Cover art by H R Giger, creator of the "alien" in the movie Alien.

  • @MsMtnGrrl I could see that being true

  • The voice, the lyrics, the arrangement, the performances; this is a masterpiece! I loved it in 1974, I love it in 2011!

  • One of my MOST favorite songs of ALL times!!! Love this version with the band, (music in the background), but also love Greg Lake's solo at the California Jam! Greg is so talented!! Very nice sound quality--Thanks for posting!!

  • still getting a rush to their sound 40 years later,,,unreal

  • Love how the base comes in and leaves... I love this song...love love love it! everything about it.

  • i hate to say this but i first droped acid back in 77 listening to this music. what a trip!

  • This is an incredible song! Greg Lake's acoustic guitar and great vocals blend together with Kieth Emerson's harpsichord (synthesizer and some electric guitar) into a wonderful harmony. Where is this kind of music today??

  • @MrHobbes2001 Long dead and gone I'm afraid.

  • I bought this cassettee 25 years ago this year.I still only have the tape when I want to hear it,like I did this morning! Still..it gives me a hard on!

  • Totally awesome timeless music! it brings back memories of my youth!!

  • RakyMaky this is the reason I subscribed to you. :D

  • what a spectacular and indescribably beautiful song.... ELP were decades ahead of their time...

  • sounds awesome

  • Love it! Thanks for posting!

  • @larryjs518 Oh, I guess I had a little different interpretation. I figured he needed the escalation provided by a ladder to hang himself, honestly.

  • sucks you cant put LOVE instead of LIKE! cause there would be ALOT of those!

  • Lovely song.. from a time when musical creativity was still moving along at a frenzied and totally inspired pace.

  • I absolutely love ELP! Still, they turn me on! :-)

  • oh yeah, this song IS from brain salad surgery ;)

  • "someone get me a ladder" is a perfect summation for the stanza "every day a little sadder, a little madder" It is a clear cry for someone to lift him up from the pit of existentialistic despair...man can I relate

  • Though I love this song, I can't help but laugh whenever he says

    "Every day a little sadder

    A little madder

    Someone get me a ladder"

Is ladder really the best way to end that Greg? I think not. Non the less, one of the best songs out there.

  • @LaGoonch In other words, She thinks so highly of herself he needs a ladder to reach 'her level'.

  • @LaGoonch

This line actually has a little background. After one of their concerts, Keith Emerson said, "I need a ladder to get down from the highs of our jams!" Greg was trying to incorporate that line.

That doesn't make it any less silly sounding, but maybe it will calm your uneasiness. Haha.

  • @LaGoonch If you suffer from depression you can understand how low you can go. So low, you need a ladder to tie your shoelaces.

  • @LaGoonch I guess the ladder is to climb above the sadder, madder state that he is in. Only my opinion:)

  • @LaGoonch " a "ladder" in great brittain means a lift... a boost, a better state of mind. Some things are lost in translation.

  • @LaGoonch " a "ladder" in great brittain means a lift... a boost, a better state of mind. Some things are lost in translation.

Trying to get above it all.

  • @lefthandedgenious Okay, this one makes sense. Thanks for enlightening me because otherwise I would have likely continued to cringe every time I hear that line.

  • @LaGoonch he wants to rise above his anger and saddness

  • @LaGoonch It was a reference to an inside joke between Keith and himself. Keith was hittin' the grass and said "I'm so high I need a ladder to tie my shoe". Although I'm sure Greg regrets that lyric today, considering the beef it's caused.

  • @LaGoonch Shit, I just misquoted keith. I was reading the comment @LaGoonch left while typing that and my mind failed. Nonetheless, Keith was high and did claim he needed a ladder to get down.

  • @LaGoonch Shit, I just misquoted you: it was @abrevaderci1 who left the comment. Goddamnit, I need to start proofreading my crap.

  • my fave elp tune...thanks for sharing!!!!

  • Brings back wonderful memories

  • THE song that reminds me of a great time in the early 70s, ruby ruby.

  • SUPER-BEAUTIFUL

  • did Giger do that cover?

  • @Alexandernero666 Yes, the cover is from Giger, but this song is not at this album (Brain salad surgery). It`s on Trilogy.....

  • THANKS for this post!!

  • this entire LP was amazing. i come from a time period when music was jumping in leaps and bounds, also a time of peace, love, drugs and not war. many people at this time period were hard rockers on drugs and when stoned, this kind of music was great to listen too. LOVE this shit!!! Timeless!!!

  • My absolute FAV ELP tune-no one touches the place they take us to in this one!

  • Beautiful, isn't it Christine.

  • Great band, great album! Fuck the shit around today!

  • So many bands force replication of the sentiment in this heartfelt miracle, yet come up eons short for their desire to plasticate that which is organic and pure . . . . the pure power of the multi-colored beauty of the sacrosanct muse. Let them sing.

  • @probrojeffro Here Here! Bravo!!

  • temazo de los inolvidables ELP, gran trabajo musical... uffff... que banda...

  • went to this concert had a good time with friends

  • not even one dislike!!!!yeah!!!!

  • E L P..........Still you turn me on. Yeah ;)

  • After all these years...yes. Who now or since has given us such beauty in music? These gentlemen came into our lives when we needed emotional definition worldwide. Like to hear a..uh..."gangsta" try to do something like this. Of course...the gangsta would have to get "real" and put away the guns and the bling and God forbid..try to even sing.

  • Have owned this album on 8 track, vinyl, cassette, and now, cd. Such a beautiful example of a musical tapestry with early synthesizer. Still love it after all these years.

  • Carl Palmer was nixed on this single ... and pissed off ....just Lake and Emerson this tune

  • How many young people think that your generations music just does not compare with any of your parents. Gimme a hit, we are trying to send the recording industry a message. Thanks!

  • one of the best bands ever to please us with real good music

  • Love this song so much! I have been looking for this song for so long. I remembered the synthesizer and the wah on the guitars. All I could get was the Cal Jam of Greg on accoustic. Thank you for uploading this for people who still adore this band as much now as then when we went to their concerts!

  • O people think this song sucks!!!!!

  • king crimson /greg lake !

  • Absolute beauty from an era and a very talented trio of musical virtuosity displaying a canvas of aural brilliance painted with a very wide brush. All in a very analog age. A masterpiece, the likes of which I fear we shall never see again.

  • @randy63ism I had the pleasure of seeing them at the first cal jam in 1974! They where amazing

  • @clmacon "Oh, what a lucky man you was!" (woman?)

  • wicked kool romantic song,,,good stuff,,!!

  • I desperately want this as my ringtone... wish I could find it! :P

  • @TravelerKM Me too :( The best I could get was Benny the Bouncer and I had to have a friend make that for me.

  • I like this much better when it's just Greg and his guitar live @ Cal Jam 74

  • @bellaemmamom I agree that the live version is better and also his diction is far better on the live version. Some of the words are lost here.

  • Thank you for posting this absolute Gem. Emerson is god

  • @Huija Don't forget Lake and Palmer. :P

  • I think EL&P ties with Pink Floyd as the first successful progressive rock band. EL&P formed, for all intents and purposes, in 1970 and Pink Floyd's "Echoes", from their 1971 release "Meddle", marked the bands move from psychedelic to progressive. Also, "Brain Salad Surgery" and "Dark Side of the Moon", the most successful albums from each band, were released in the same year.

  • Thank you sooooo much for posting this gem! ELP FOREVER!
