i used to be SO IN LOVE with Greg Lake!! I would watch a woodstock type concert in the 10th grade. It was called California Jams. Ozzy and everyone was there, but I stayed up late, every night, just to hear Greg sing this**
I was at cal jam and a lot of us were pisst off when deep purple open for ''emerson.lake & palmer''.O'well its all good,by the E.L.P. were great..thanks for the post...
I've always loved this song. I remember my mom - may she RIP - used to like this song a lot too! she said it sounded French. Will always remind me of that.
I first heard ELP back in 69 And ever since The sound has changed my perception . Of how I hear music now . I listen ! Thanks for posting Long live the Emerson Lake and Palmer .
When I saw carl Palmer at the Rock-n-Roll Hall OF Fame a few weeks ago , Carl said that hte Jimi Hendrix story is not true . I was lucky to have him sign my Brain Salad Surgery gatefold LP >
One of my MOST favorite songs of ALL times!!! Love this version with the band, (music in the background), but also love Greg Lake's solo at the California Jam! Greg is so talented!! Very nice sound quality--Thanks for posting!!
This is an incredible song! Greg Lake's acoustic guitar and great vocals blend together with Kieth Emerson's harpsichord (synthesizer and some electric guitar) into a wonderful harmony. Where is this kind of music today??
I bought this cassettee 25 years ago this year.I still only have the tape when I want to hear it,like I did this morning! Still..it gives me a hard on!
"someone get me a ladder" is a perfect summation for the stanza "every day a little sadder, a little madder" It is a clear cry for someone to lift him up from the pit of existentialistic despair...man can I relate
This line actually has a little background. After one of their concerts, Keith Emerson said, "I need a ladder to get down from the highs of our jams!" Greg was trying to incorporate that line.
That doesn't make it any less silly sounding, but maybe it will calm your uneasiness. Haha.
@beingfacetious90 Thanks for the background, but I think it'll come across as even more silly now. I mean "I need a ladder to get down from the highs of our jams!" sounds like something one of the guys from Spinal Tap would say XD
@lefthandedgenious Okay, this one makes sense. Thanks for enlightening me because otherwise I would have likely continued to cringe every time I hear that line.
@LaGoonch It was a reference to an inside joke between Keith and himself. Keith was hittin' the grass and said "I'm so high I need a ladder to tie my shoe". Although I'm sure Greg regrets that lyric today, considering the beef it's caused.
@LaGoonch Shit, I just misquoted keith. I was reading the comment @LaGoonch left while typing that and my mind failed. Nonetheless, Keith was high and did claim he needed a ladder to get down.
next to zappa, ted nugent, johnny winter, elp was my favorite head band. king crimson was too. i saw every concert they played at the spectrum, except for the 69 luckyman tour. god damn their music still holds up today. listen to their first album from 40 years ago and tell me that doesnt blow you away. lakes voice is as close to lennons voice that ive ever heard. elp forever
this entire LP was amazing. i come from a time period when music was jumping in leaps and bounds, also a time of peace, love, drugs and not war. many people at this time period were hard rockers on drugs and when stoned, this kind of music was great to listen too. LOVE this shit!!! Timeless!!!
So many bands force replication of the sentiment in this heartfelt miracle, yet come up eons short for their desire to plasticate that which is organic and pure . . . . the pure power of the multi-colored beauty of the sacrosanct muse. Let them sing.
After all these years...yes. Who now or since has given us such beauty in music? These gentlemen came into our lives when we needed emotional definition worldwide. Like to hear a..uh..."gangsta" try to do something like this. Of course...the gangsta would have to get "real" and put away the guns and the bling and God forbid..try to even sing.
Have owned this album on 8 track, vinyl, cassette, and now, cd. Such a beautiful example of a musical tapestry with early synthesizer. Still love it after all these years.
How many young people think that your generations music just does not compare with any of your parents. Gimme a hit, we are trying to send the recording industry a message. Thanks!
Love this song so much! I have been looking for this song for so long. I remembered the synthesizer and the wah on the guitars. All I could get was the Cal Jam of Greg on accoustic. Thank you for uploading this for people who still adore this band as much now as then when we went to their concerts!
Absolute beauty from an era and a very talented trio of musical virtuosity displaying a canvas of aural brilliance painted with a very wide brush. All in a very analog age. A masterpiece, the likes of which I fear we shall never see again.
I think EL&P ties with Pink Floyd as the first successful progressive rock band. EL&P formed, for all intents and purposes, in 1970 and Pink Floyd's "Echoes", from their 1971 release "Meddle", marked the bands move from psychedelic to progressive. Also, "Brain Salad Surgery" and "Dark Side of the Moon", the most successful albums from each band, were released in the same year.
I always thought this song sounded like Greg was singing about a meth addiction.
