Back then I thought it was an awful interpretation of a beautiful and traditional song mainly due to the style of singing. I listened again to be certain my original view and opinion was fair. Yep. The head and hand movements are for effect. To say that this is necessary to reach high notes is absolute nonsense. This is a pretty recent dramatic addition many singers, mostly young and female, have adopted. I suspect it is simply done to add drama and perhaps suggest to people that what they are doing is actually, a lot more difficult than it really is. Over and above that, and personalities totally aside, a very precious, traditional and beautiful song has been absolutely crucified here.
