I agree with mainly everything you said there. I personally find Japanese, and any other movie as a matter of fact, that is made originally using their language to be the best and most authentic. I've noticed though that individuals that are simple minded and still haven't been involved with people of different backgrounds and languages tend to lean towards their own and call it "superior" because they are used to that language. DBZ, imo, sounds good in English. Only anime that I can think of.
@OneOrderOfRice While I would agree that most anime sounds BETTER in Japanese there are some instances where dubbing is better. Not only that but if you dont want to read subtitles or your TV is too small and far away to make subtitles logical, dubs can sound only slightly worse than the original (depending on the anime). Examples where dubbing is actually better is Spice and Wolf, Cowboy Bebop, and Summer Wars.

When I got to talk to American voice actors at Armageddon here in New Zealand I found out that Voice Actors had to deliberately sound bad to appeal to American audiences, because that is what they'd expect to hear.
I personally prefer the dub because the sub tittles in the subs go by to fast, and if I miss something I'll than have to back track to what I missed. I like to read books, and I like to watch T.V.

They do, and I'm fully aware of it. But like I said in a previous example, one bad company does not represent the entire dubbing industry. There are many good dubs (Cowboy Bebop, BECK, Deathnote, etc.), that come from dubbing companies. What I'm against is the claim that "all English anime dubs are bad," which is not true by any means.

It so hard to find a person who's watched and liked this fantastic show. Easily one of my top favorite anime, maybe even my #1 favorite.

@Bradax24 Yeah, BECK revived my interest in music and especially guitar. It's definitely in my top 3, I even read all of the manga despite how badly translated it was.
@Bradax24 Oh, the manga is about 30% longer than the anime, and it's actually pretty good. I love how each chapter cover parodies a famous album cover. The live action wasn't so great though.
@Bradax24 Hm, it's been about a year so I might not recall it too well. Maho left for London or something, and Koyuki returned to and thought she was cheating (a bit after the American tour, or maybe before?) And Eddie ends up dying is all I really remember specifically.
Part of me hopes that Madhouse produces an OVA based off the manga extension, and another part is satisfied with the ambiguous ending the series left.

Funimation did a great job with DBZ. I do agree that the Japanese version of the show was far better in quality dialogue wise, but the English dub has better music. Anyway, no need to fight people. Our oppinions are like assholes ... To others, they stink.

Dubbing is for people that don't know how to read, or simply don't have the patience or processing capability to do so while watching the show, movie, etc. Everything is better in its original unfettered format, music, anime, movies, all forms of media imo :P

What VA has gone off to regular acting? I haven't seen Vic Minagona or Chris Sabat in any movies lately, why is that? Specialization, like the seiyu. Hard work goes into the English production of an anime. The quality shoots up tremendously as time goes on because the VAs dubbing these shows are anime fans themselves. There's script writing, ADV direction and sound direction, all of which are done in original versions, mind you.
I'm not even gonna go into too much detail as to why dubs are important for anime in the states, and in general. To quote Hayao Miyazaki, "when you watch the subtitled version you are probably missing just as many things. There is a layer and a nuance you're not going to get."
Also, you used bad examples of dubs to get your point across. What about Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, BECK, Deathnote? Last I checked, many people like those dubs. Even if you used those, your arguments are still subjective.
I know there are some VA's that are genuinely in for the job, I myself think Vic Mignogna is pretty good but overall I don't like dubs because it really does lack substance and feeling in comparison to the original. I mean, it's the same for the Japanese dubbing American movies - the it factor just isn't there. But that's just my opinion, I respect yours.

I do have to say though that your comment is correct in one sense, and not in another.
Many people who watch subs are monolingual and don't know the mannerisms of the Japanese language well. This leaves the performance of the sub to one's imagination, sometimes letting bad performances slip by unnoticed. Anime, in Japan, is like Hollywood; no matter how high in regard people hold a studio, a bad performance can happen.
@Bradax24 Because Japan treats anime like film, they do have much respect for the material and performances, but that doesnt mean a slip up can't come out.
When anime started dubbing in English it did start out bad, but as time went on, studios put alot more care into dubbing and the quality shot up too. Now and days, dubs have a good chance of being as good as the original, sometimes better (BECK). Fans started taking control of the dubbing process and alot more care comes with that commitment.
There are good examples of dubs that actually surpass sub (Baccano!, BECK, Romeo X Juliet, Cowboy Bebop, etc), and there are many more examples of dubs that are on par with their sub counterpart (Excel Saga, Fullmetal Alchemist, Deathnote, Soul Eater, Wolf's Rain, etc). Most of the "on par" dubs will have complaints that are simply nitpicks of any minuscule blemish in a performance, which can't be caught in Japanese because, chances are, they can't speak Japanese!

When I watch a dub version of a show (typically when I watched the sub beforehand), I can tend to be alot less forgiving when some minor flaws come up, but when taken by their own merits (like watching any other type of film in English) I can enjoy it as much as I enjoy a sub. In fact, I can enjoy it more, if done right.

Watch the original sub of any show if you're against dubs so much, just support the creators. Either buy the DVDs or stream the show through the licenses video portal. But just because you don't like dubs, doesn't mean others won't (especially if you don't give a valid reason for criticizing the dub's quality), let people have their options.

I like watching my in sub. I like to avoid dubb if i have to but if i cant then i will watch it. To me subb i can connect to the character easier emotionally and mentally then dubb. And to me the sub version seems to do a much better explanation on things. So for me sub is the way to goo
Whether you like sub or dub is an opinion/personal preference (i think it's subconscious). People who usually like to read a lot of manga or just read in general tend to like subs more then subs. Slow readers, or people who don't like to read will usually go for dubs. Some people like subs for its "authenticity" and others like dubs becuase they want to watch something in their own language. I personally don't care if somethings subbed or dubbed. In one ear out the other its all the same to me.
I find anime easier to understand in dub. well, some of them. then others you gotta watch it in sub for a deeper story, like higurashi and clannad. I don't like their dubs.

I like watching anime dubbed. I would much rather WATCH an animation, not read it. That is what manga is for.
A lot of dubhaters have valid reasons for not liking dubbed (the video uploader has valid reasons, but I have to add that there are plenty of dubs recently that have been done really well), but majority as I see here have very lame reasons. Most dubhaters are also very biased.
I only resort to sub if the anime has been heavily edited when dubbed (ex: Cardcaptor Sakura).

I fail to see how WATCHING an anime equates to being lazy. That argument is also poor, because in the first place, even those fluent in Japanese wouldn't want to watch an anime with subtitles. They can just watch it raw. I prefer not to read a cartoon. There's manga for that.
Also, anime is different from a movie/drama. An anime is a cartoon, they don't have a voice unless someone edits them in. A movie has actors not voice overs. In that case, I would rather watch it subtitled.

I especially hate how names get mangled! In Japanese, the high vowels, written I and U in Romaji, are supposed to be the weakest and are often devoiced between voiceless consonants, but dubbers will often give these weak vowels extra heavy stress. Thus we get such abominations as uh-SOO-nuh for あすな, a name that I myself pronounce as AHSS-nuh.
Agreed, if anyone complains about having to constantly read the subtitles, well guess what? stop being so incompetent. It's not hard to get a glimpse of the subs and watch the anime at the same time, oh no wait, you lazy asses just prefer lame dubs with considerable amounts of errors right? how sad...
@marillblu Er, not all of them, you have to look for the most reliable fansubs. At least it's better than listening to a grown woman trying to imitate the voice of a little girl and failing miserably, or having jokes getting lost in the translation...
Anything that will be translated whether sub or dub will someway or another get "lost in translation". Fansubs are far from accurate as well, even they will admit to it. Licensed anime get the transcripts directly from the creators from Japan, while fansubbers have to rely on what they hear when translating. If you want to understand the puns and jokes in an anime, the only best way is to know the language.
Also, interestingly, Lucky Star dub was highly praised in Japan.

If you want a loud anime with yelling then go Jap, if you want talking and emotion go with English. I listen to Japanese dubs and unless they're crying or are VERY upset I can't feel any emotion from the voice actors, English voice actors seem to be able to portray their emotions easier.

I like the Japanese audio better than the English dub.. I guess mainly because I like the language and im studying it at my University but... for example i grew up watching some Gundams, Ruroni Kenshi Dragon Ball Z, Etc in Latin American Spanish so i prefer to watch those in Spanish. I guess you need to discover the language...

LOL I totally agree with you! I do like some anime better in English dub, though that doesn't happen a lot. I love listening to the Japanese language, and yes some of the jokes are lost (though not all, if it had good dubbers. I've seen animes destroyed because of bad dubbers...) ALSO there is either lots of missing emotion and or changed emotions throughout the anime, like you said, I see it too.
Not all English dub suck. I've seena couple of Animes with a decent dub like Cowboy Bebop, Case Closed, just to name a couple. And don't defend the Japanese like a Japanese like a religion. There is some Japanese VO that fail too.

In addition, Japanese method of speech, humor and culture are vastly different than that of English. It's difficult as hell to express them in the exact same way. Now, I can speak 3 languages and I've been to Japan for a small period of my life. I know this and I can sympathize.
Here's an advice, if you don't like dubs than don't watch it. Obviously, if you're old enough to surf Youtbe you can bloody well type in WATCH ****** ONLINE and find subbed episodes.
disregarding the dork in the video, I just want everyon to keep in mind that becoming a voice actor for anime is a HIGHLY PRESTIGIOUS CAREER. In fact, if you're in high school and you have the vocal talent to become a voice actor, you will be highly regarded and popular. Not something that is prevalent in North America or anywhere else in the world.

Cowboy Bebops english is better than the japanese and i just started getting into the series, and the japanese voice actors for DBZ is annoying especially goku's coice. sound like a damn chipmunk. the english is way better
Dragonball Z dub is clearly superior to the Japanese version. Their characters have next to no emotion. Hell, Goku and his family all have the same voice actor.
Doesn't AkitaTom sound like he's really getting into Japan? 1.) Japanese anime shows always take place in Japan.2.) Most of the male characters are voiced by women 3.) For example, throughout much of Dragonball (and Z and/or GT), Goku is voiced by a female. But he's a masculine dude who loves to fight. Seems a little out of place. I'm GLAD that the English dub gives him an actual guy's voice, as well as pretty good voices for many of the Z fighters, especially Vegeta. The Ocean dub frankly sucked ass, too. Funimation did a much better job on that front.
The dub for Boys over Flowers wasn't that bad, either.
I once saw some episodes of Video Girl Ai, and I could not BELIEVE just how childish Ai's voice sounded in Japanese. I was like, "What THE FUCK!" She was in her late teens, just like Moteuchi (or whatever the hell his name is), and she sounded like a toddler or infant. It was disturbing. The problem with young girl characters in subbed anime is that their voices are oftentimes far too high-pitched. Japanese may like that, but as a Westerner, I find it creepy. I want my women mature.
@whoo689 One thing I will give you is that, having watched dubbed anime with the Japanese subs on, you do notice a very weird disconnect between what they ACTUALLY said in the original, and how the translators said it. They'll cut out entire sentences or phrases because they either think the English viewers (or at least the American ones) are "too dumb" or ignorant to know it, or they dumb down the vocabulary. It's very annoying. So you get anime that's way too mixed up colloquialisms.
The thing is that you want the japanese speaking for the japanese movies and anime but you dont want someone else to do it because it would ruin the feeling. Tom said that you dont want to watch japanese speaking simpsons and I think that is a great example, subs are faaaar greater then dubbing japanese anime with american voices or something like that. SUBS! and dub can just stop with exsiting.
I don't really care but if I had to chose it WOULD have to be English. I have Dyslexia so It's very hard for me to read subs. And I have to keep pausing it EVERY TIME THEY TALK. So please think of the people who REALLY cannot read.

I agree with mainly everything you said there. I personally find Japanese, and any other movie as a matter of fact, that is made originally using their language to be the best and most authentic. I've noticed though that individuals that are simple minded and still haven't been involved with people of different backgrounds and languages tend to lean towards their own and call it "superior" because they are used to that language. DBZ, imo, sounds good in English. Only anime that I can think of.

@OneOrderOfRice While I would agree that most anime sounds BETTER in Japanese there are some instances where dubbing is better. Not only that but if you dont want to read subtitles or your TV is too small and far away to make subtitles logical, dubs can sound only slightly worse than the original (depending on the anime). Examples where dubbing is actually better is Spice and Wolf, Cowboy Bebop, and Summer Wars.

What VA has gone off to regular acting? I haven't seen Vic Minagona or Chris Sabat in any movies lately, why is that? Specialization, like the seiyu. Hard work goes into the English production of an anime. The quality shoots up tremendously as time goes on because the VAs dubbing these shows are anime fans themselves. There's script writing, ADV direction and sound direction, all of which are done in original versions, mind you.

I'm not even gonna go into too much detail as to why dubs are important for anime in the states, and in general. To quote Hayao Miyazaki, "when you watch the subtitled version you are probably missing just as many things. There is a layer and a nuance you're not going to get."
Also, you used bad examples of dubs to get your point across. What about Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, BECK, Deathnote? Last I checked, many people like those dubs. Even if you used those, your arguments are still subjective.

I do have to say though that your comment is correct in one sense, and not in another.
Many people who watch subs are monolingual and don't know the mannerisms of the Japanese language well. This leaves the performance of the sub to one's imagination, sometimes letting bad performances slip by unnoticed. Anime, in Japan, is like Hollywood; no matter how high in regard people hold a studio, a bad performance can happen.

When anime started dubbing in English it did start out bad, but as time went on, studios put alot more care into dubbing and the quality shot up too. Now and days, dubs have a good chance of being as good as the original, sometimes better (BECK). Fans started taking control of the dubbing process and alot more care comes with that commitment.

There are good examples of dubs that actually surpass sub (Baccano!, BECK, Romeo X Juliet, Cowboy Bebop, etc), and there are many more examples of dubs that are on par with their sub counterpart (Excel Saga, Fullmetal Alchemist, Deathnote, Soul Eater, Wolf's Rain, etc). Most of the "on par" dubs will have complaints that are simply nitpicks of any minuscule blemish in a performance, which can't be caught in Japanese because, chances are, they can't speak Japanese!

When I watch a dub version of a show (typically when I watched the sub beforehand), I can tend to be alot less forgiving when some minor flaws come up, but when taken by their own merits (like watching any other type of film in English) I can enjoy it as much as I enjoy a sub. In fact, I can enjoy it more, if done right.

Whether you like sub or dub is an opinion/personal preference (i think it's subconscious). People who usually like to read a lot of manga or just read in general tend to like subs more then subs. Slow readers, or people who don't like to read will usually go for dubs. Some people like subs for its "authenticity" and others like dubs becuase they want to watch something in their own language. I personally don't care if somethings subbed or dubbed. In one ear out the other its all the same to me.

I like watching anime dubbed. I would much rather WATCH an animation, not read it. That is what manga is for.
A lot of dubhaters have valid reasons for not liking dubbed (the video uploader has valid reasons, but I have to add that there are plenty of dubs recently that have been done really well), but majority as I see here have very lame reasons. Most dubhaters are also very biased.
I only resort to sub if the anime has been heavily edited when dubbed (ex: Cardcaptor Sakura).

I fail to see how WATCHING an anime equates to being lazy. That argument is also poor, because in the first place, even those fluent in Japanese wouldn't want to watch an anime with subtitles. They can just watch it raw. I prefer not to read a cartoon. There's manga for that.
Also, anime is different from a movie/drama. An anime is a cartoon, they don't have a voice unless someone edits them in. A movie has actors not voice overs. In that case, I would rather watch it subtitled.

I especially hate how names get mangled! In Japanese, the high vowels, written I and U in Romaji, are supposed to be the weakest and are often devoiced between voiceless consonants, but dubbers will often give these weak vowels extra heavy stress. Thus we get such abominations as uh-SOO-nuh for あすな, a name that I myself pronounce as AHSS-nuh.

Anything that will be translated whether sub or dub will someway or another get "lost in translation". Fansubs are far from accurate as well, even they will admit to it. Licensed anime get the transcripts directly from the creators from Japan, while fansubbers have to rely on what they hear when translating. If you want to understand the puns and jokes in an anime, the only best way is to know the language.
Also, interestingly, Lucky Star dub was highly praised in Japan.

Dude, I'm not basing this on one fluent person, I'm basing it on every fluent person I've talked to, and they said the same thing. Not wanting to watch anime subbed is a preference, not laziness/incompetence. That is the most narrowminded argument I've ever heard. Those who like dubs already tried subs, but they prefer dubs more.
Foreign films have actors to play the characters so that means the characters already have a permanent voice. Cartoons don't have a voice to begin with.

i agree with your other points.. sort of. Yes when you dub a visual in any different language then the one it was filmed with there is always something not quite right. (doesnt=bad tho) but translating is when the jokes get lost not just the acutual dubing. when you read a french story in english its STILL kind of not the same.btw im not forcing my beliefs on anyone. no one HAS to watch dub OR sub you watch whatever you like im just addressing your points. ppl arguing about it is dumb though.

If you want a loud anime with yelling then go Jap, if you want talking and emotion go with English. I listen to Japanese dubs and unless they're crying or are VERY upset I can't feel any emotion from the voice actors, English voice actors seem to be able to portray their emotions easier.

I like the Japanese audio better than the English dub.. I guess mainly because I like the language and im studying it at my University but... for example i grew up watching some Gundams, Ruroni Kenshi Dragon Ball Z, Etc in Latin American Spanish so i prefer to watch those in Spanish. I guess you need to discover the language...

LOL I totally agree with you! I do like some anime better in English dub, though that doesn't happen a lot. I love listening to the Japanese language, and yes some of the jokes are lost (though not all, if it had good dubbers. I've seen animes destroyed because of bad dubbers...) ALSO there is either lots of missing emotion and or changed emotions throughout the anime, like you said, I see it too.

Not all English dub suck. I've seena couple of Animes with a decent dub like Cowboy Bebop, Case Closed, just to name a couple. And don't defend the Japanese like a Japanese like a religion. There is some Japanese VO that fail too.

Dubbing it in english is actually pretty good (someone of them) but people that watch in fansubs are actually hurting the idustry. I mean companys do sub anime for you guys and you still complain you need to buy the products. If I want to read than I will read the manga.

In addition, Japanese method of speech, humor and culture are vastly different than that of English. It's difficult as hell to express them in the exact same way. Now, I can speak 3 languages and I've been to Japan for a small period of my life. I know this and I can sympathize.
Here's an advice, if you don't like dubs than don't watch it. Obviously, if you're old enough to surf Youtbe you can bloody well type in WATCH ****** ONLINE and find subbed episodes.

disregarding the dork in the video, I just want everyon to keep in mind that becoming a voice actor for anime is a HIGHLY PRESTIGIOUS CAREER. In fact, if you're in high school and you have the vocal talent to become a voice actor, you will be highly regarded and popular. Not something that is prevalent in North America or anywhere else in the world.
If Disney started dubbing anime, maybe we have a contender for the amount of work that Japanese voice actors do.

I frankly feel like this stubborness among many otaku to refuse to watch ANY dubbed anime is just petty and childish. If the anime is good, who CARES if it's dubbed or subbed?? I'll watch any anime if it's good, and I know what the hell the characters are saying. If the storyline is good, you're going to enjoy it regardless of what the voices sound like, for the most part. Look, some English dubs suck, but so do some Japanese ones. I mean, come on.

For example, throughout much of Dragonball (and Z and/or GT), Goku is voiced by a female. But he's a masculine dude who loves to fight. Seems a little out of place. I'm GLAD that the English dub gives him an actual guy's voice, as well as pretty good voices for many of the Z fighters, especially Vegeta. The Ocean dub frankly sucked ass, too. Funimation did a much better job on that front.
The dub for Boys over Flowers wasn't that bad, either.

I once saw some episodes of Video Girl Ai, and I could not BELIEVE just how childish Ai's voice sounded in Japanese. I was like, "What THE FUCK!" She was in her late teens, just like Moteuchi (or whatever the hell his name is), and she sounded like a toddler or infant. It was disturbing. The problem with young girl characters in subbed anime is that their voices are oftentimes far too high-pitched. Japanese may like that, but as a Westerner, I find it creepy. I want my women mature.

@whoo689 One thing I will give you is that, having watched dubbed anime with the Japanese subs on, you do notice a very weird disconnect between what they ACTUALLY said in the original, and how the translators said it. They'll cut out entire sentences or phrases because they either think the English viewers (or at least the American ones) are "too dumb" or ignorant to know it, or they dumb down the vocabulary. It's very annoying. So you get anime that's way too mixed up colloquialisms.

The thing is that you want the japanese speaking for the japanese movies and anime but you dont want someone else to do it because it would ruin the feeling. Tom said that you dont want to watch japanese speaking simpsons and I think that is a great example, subs are faaaar greater then dubbing japanese anime with american voices or something like that. I don't really care but if I had to chose it WOULD have to be English. I have Dyslexia so It's very hard for me to read subs. And I have to keep pausing it EVERY TIME THEY TALK. So please think of the people who REALLY cannot read.
