That's it! I'm addin' as many Eleanor Powell videos to my list as I can. Masterful! Who's the dame with the gun in this video? We gotta stop her before she causes any trouble..see?
Eleanor Powell is without any doubt the best dancer I've ever seen. She was a perfect tap dancer and "foot percussionist" (don't know how to explain it ;). So much sense of rhythm and musicality is rare and precious. And talking about precious: She was an extremely charismatic and beautiful woman.
Fun dance number I hadn't seen. The tap dubbing right at the beginning around 0:39-0:45 is a bit sloppy. The sounds don't match the steps properly. But they obviously wanted a bigger "drum beat" sound than those steps provided.
Ellie could be risque every once in a while. Once again she danced ever so perfectly to the music in perfect step and interpretation. Noboy like her before nor after. She danced like she came from another world. Maybe she did come from another world. She was almost super human.
Can't believe how genius this routine is...am I ahead of my time for recognizing this stunning piece of art before my time? If this isn't sold properly on qualified DVD I'm going to use it free of copyright for my own dance routine!
I have been watching Ellie dance on youtube. I was wondering if someone could please help me out. I have not seen any of her movies and would like to. What movies of her are great or schould I watch all of them? I just get amazed at watchign her dance. I think she is versitle tap dancer. She is one of my favorites.
Few of the films are "great", but all of her dances are. :-) I'd recommend that you see all the movies, starting with Broadway Melody of 1936. Her brief appearance in the earlier film, George White's Scandals of 1935, is seen in its entirety here at YouTube.
Thanks, Judith. You know, you gotta love the Internet. There's always somebody who has something interesting to add. Thanks very much for sharing that info.
oh gosh! that's was interesting and amazing, i never saw this clip before, i especially favor this video because she seems to have a different style to it then she does with all her other tap routines, i like it because there's a small hint of femme fatale in it if you look and think about it, and her outfit with the visible garter. the music is wonderful too
Thanks for posting ventnor43, and thanks for tipping me off, J. A neat number - too short, but fun! Ellie slipped in a bit of her trademark boogie woogie step.
Too short - and too many cut-aways to the woman in the balcony. (One cut-away is too many!) Frustrating! This is not the treatment she got as a star at MGM. The number does show her versatility - that she could have moved with the times re: types of dancing featured in films of the late 40s and the 50s.
What our Eleanor Powell couldn't do. She dances with so much freedom and space, she knows how to move to music just as much as latin americans do, and they dance pretty good.
You're welcome. Thanks for posting the comment, Judith. I also appreciate your upload of Eleanor Powell as she appeared in, "Dutchess of Idaho." That was the first time I had ever seen that clip. I thought it was great.

@lizzyvance Hi - Just noted your comment. Check out 'Ship Ahoy' with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra. Great dance number with Eleanor and Buddy Rich.

Documentation that her partner in this number is Russian-born dancer and choreographer David Lichine can be found in

Anyone know for certain who the male dancer is? I believe it's David Lichine (1910-1972).
JudithIN410 2 years ago
You're absolutely correct Judy. The male dancer is David Lichine.

Thanks for posting this. I have the film on dvd but had forgotten about this number. It's certainly a different kind of routine for Ellie.

@ventnor43 Agree with you. It's a pity that the so-called STARS of today's crappy music cannot swing & dance like this.
