Man, these 'old-timers' just keep skipping my country whenever they go on a European tour (been here only twice, EVER! :((( ). But I forgive them ;). And I still love them and their music more than life itself!! :)))) May they live forever!
Great People! Phantastic live band! I saw them in the end of the 80ier in East-Berlin in an illegal concert in a little room of a church - the only place where it was possible to play without being watched by the secret service "stasi"...wow, was that great! They had kicked our hearts...an absolute new kind of hardcore-punk...the played their instruments in a perfection like jazz-musicians would do it...if you know what I mean...
I saw these guys for the first time in middlesborough england in '88. Mind blowing is the only phrase to descibe seeing these guys for the first time..... Saw them last year in huddersfield, even better, blew what few brain cells I have left!
His 'nod' at Finland is spot on ... the first time they were in my town, it was fine. I mean the crowd was fine; lots of us, everyone going crazy. The 2nd, well, just like he describes it. And I'm ashamed to say that halfway through the gig, I gave in to the peer pressure, stepped back and enjoyed the rest of the show just standing back there ... no wonder that was the last time (so far) they bothered to come up here.
I agree, these dudes totally remind me of the Minutemen. Some of the parallels are obvious (3-piece band, bass-heavy songs, etc.), but on a deeper level, both bands had/have a crazy work ethic, but also the sheer sense of cohesion and the drive to play without any clear preconception about they ought to sound; they are/were similar on a very sort of philosophical level as well as a kind of aesthetic level.
I was at that show in Roskilde(1994) he talks about. It was the first time i saw them, they had 2 drummers back then & we all was very drunk :P the girl i was with puked where we stood :P
"Music is like a fire. You just have to stoke it and keep it burning. It doesn't need to change, it keeps you warm, just the way it is." - there's some profundity for you.
I love Nomeansno, and I never heard Rob just talk, so this is really cool :) His brother is realy cool too :) They're so badass, whether in concert or in person.
I think there are a lot of bands who don't want to mention Nomeansno. Some are obvious *coughclaypoolcough* and others just don't want to point out that Rob and John were easily 20 years ahead of everyone else.
What do you mean by Claypool? You mean he was influenced but doesnt want to admit it or? What's the story here?
NoMeansNo became my favorite band as soon as I heard them and really, that kind of interviews reminds me why. Pure rockers, please keep on playing!! We love you!
I think Claypool was heavily influenced and to my knowledge has never admitted to it. Why that might be I won't speculate but I do know from a friend of mine who opened for Primus a few years back that Claypool can be a real dick to other musicians. He was very rude to them and wouldn't even shake their hands when they thanked him for the opportunity.

That suggestion is too rawk to be punk rawk, but I think he probably was thinking it, cuz NMN is too punk to be punk. ;)
