Just be glad you didn't try the cheese and veggie omelet. That used to be okay in my book but now it's just awful. I can barely eat 3/4 of it (only because I have to). No other marine I know dare touches it. My only complaint about MREs is they have only a spoon and not a fork too or better, a spork. As you mentioned once you saw the heater, it would've helped to heat the meatloaf and mashed potatoes up earlier. It's not necessary but it helps sometimes.

Heated MRE's would have been a luxury. :) often times we didn't have the heaters or just didn't have time for it. Eventually it got to the point where I would be nauseated just by the sight of an MRE...they are that bad.

A good thing to do right as you were headed out to the field was to eat the MRE cheese so you would be constipated the entire time. No tootsie rolls in ours, just Charms.

If your car broke down in the desert or the middle of nowhere and you had no cell signal and ended up sitting in your car for days on end praying for someone to come by and suddenly found an MRE pack in the trunk you'd tear that package apart and wolf down everything in the pack and you'd find the MRE was the greatest thing you've ever tasted.

During service at the German Bundeswehr I got acquainted with German MRE, the so called EPa (Einmannpackung). As a part of the training we unpacked, heated and ate one EPa. Trying the components I was just as enthusiastic about it as you were in the video. But imagine spending a cold night and a not much warmer morning on military training outdoors in october. You wouldn't believe how fantastic a (warm :-P) meal of a MRE-Pack can taste... (Sorry for bad English)

I've found that the meatloaf and gravy should be combined (after heating). By combining them it seems to neutralize their individual nasty flavors and makes them actually pretty good... for MRE's.

MRE's aren't heated with fire; they are heated in a speacial pouch that has chemicals in it that heat up when some water is added. The entree pouch is inserted into the heater, add some water, fold top down and put back in box leaned at an angle for 15 minutes or so. They get pretty hot.

We use knives to open all the packages minus the cardboard packages. And the entree sections taste alot better if you heat it up. Use the pre packed jelly, peanut butter, or cheese with the crackers and or snack bread...this makes it taste better as well. These meals are made to swap out items as well so use your noggin, thats what makes it bearable cuisine. :)

MRE's are an in case of fire meal. If the kitchen is down or you are too far from the kitchen and need sustenance then you either eat an MRE or starve. More than likely you will eat the meal.
