What a sense of humor he must have to be able to make a video like that. Well,I think Sting really had issues with both his parents. I read his autobiography and he said that his mum walked out on the family after having an affair that he discovered her in and dad seemed pretty distant and ineffectual to me. His motner died of cancer about 10 years after she left and then dad died. He did not go to either one of their funerals so it was probably a love/hate situation there, but Sting loved them.
Stings father died,he was writing about things his father told him about ancient UK as well as burial practices...Burying the dead at sea. Sting is a history buff as well as a closet Christian. Note some beatitudes are quoted in the song. "blessed are the poor".... Basically just a cool song about ancient England and their religious past and burieal practices and probably hypocracy
great album. very different from all his others. manu katche has a lovely metre.. also love the use of pipes/strings and mandolins. when the angels fall is haunting and makes me drop off to sleep
I could listen to this song over and over, never getting tired of it, the bass line, the mandolin, the guitar chops, the hammond, the drums... talk about a perfect song.
His performance of this on Saturday Night Live was amazing. You could really hear the bass. Since I heard that version first, I always want it to sound like that.
In 2002 I listened to this song on the way to my gf's house every weekend. It's probably the only good memory I have from that relationship. Thanks Sting!
I'm a grunge addict, and yet, theres an aspect to this song that is soooo much cooler than anything grunge could produce.
Keep in mind I'm a 15 year old kid, so don't think that all us kids listen to crap. "Fields of Gold" is an amazing album. just the way its set up and the song transition is perfect.
its funny, if you actually listen to the lyrics of the song, their much darker than both the tone of the song and the video. interesting artistic trick. bravo, sting!
This is about a boy who wants to bury his father at sea over the objections of 2 priests. It's a satire of rituals - the priests think the man should be buried according to their practices.
My father passed away a little over a month ago ..and remembering this song I instantly began playing it again . ..LOL ...the line about MY OLD MAN LAUGHING ..and hey , my sister and I spread some of Dads ashes ..in the PACIFIC OCEAN ( bury the old man at sea) near where I live .
So sorry about your Dad's passing. My Dad passed away four years ago and the pain of parting never ends. I see his face; we converse; and this whole album "Soul Cages" captures my relationship with him somewhat. Sting is relating his feelings about his father in this wonderful album.
Great song, great video, obviously patterned after the stateroom scene from the Marx Brothers "A Night at the Opera." I love it when he starts to sing into the wrench.
Kinda sucks that this song isnt on Sting's greatest hits, in fact its only loaded with songs with The Police (which is great) but only has a couple Sting songs i like... It's like Sting left out the good ones... This song should be called Syncronicity 3!-any thoughts?
heh, I heard it by chance on mtv, WAT back when it first came out, having a brew in a bar. And something about it hit a chord. I'd been trying to find it until a year or so, and fund it here.
For a month I listened to this and The shape of my heart, and I'm a jazz/blues musician!
At first sight the video may seem dumb, but I think it's deeper than you think. I think it's about the hurry in peoples lives today, and the disrespect of others. Then it has some humour, and that is never wrong.
OK, I found your comment on All This Time. I really like this song, and MANY other Police and Sting releases. Sweden? thats so cool. I've never talked to anyone from Sweden. Hope you are safe and happy.
OH MY GOD this was one of those things you remember from your eaaaaaarly childhood, and you try really hard to find out what it was cause you just can't remember it... I had no idea it was a Sting video! :D I didn't even remember the song. (it could have been on mute, cause Sting's been my favorite since I could remember) it was just something about the video itself that stuck with me... ironic- I LOVE this album, and it's so incredibly underrated it makes me sick
Thank you! I LOVE this song. Always puts you in a great mood! The mandolin (?) at the beginning is fierce! Beautiful poetic lyrics, touching sentiment. Someday, our dads will die. Can you believe it? But at least we can remember them with awesome songs like this.
this is one of the most underrated albums ever. I like the video it's pretty comical... but one the same note, it seems to make the song to lighthearted, when i think its very emotional.
I agree. I've heard some people say that this album is a very boring one. Alright most of them like All this time but thats it. I wonder why anyone didn't notice songs like The Soul Cages? And as you already mentioned this video has an interesting contrast in it because the video itself seems to be very happy and shiny - even the melody. But the lyrics itself .... very serious. F.e. that line: "Father if Jesus exists then how come he never lived here?" Definitely an underrated album- youre right
Sting kind of has a category all his own. yes, the Police
made Ska big, but then He just kinda went with whatever suited his fancy since, and he's incredible. Shape of My Heart has to be melodically right up there with some of Pat Methney's best stuff Just really beautiful and creative music.
Even so, it's still really hard for me to understand, let alone like, why someone would put this out ~ Acting extremely opposite to what he actually felt? Or, just Sting product? I agree, the death of a loved one is a private, deeply personal experience; no need to make a song and dance from it. The song itself is, IMO, interesting linguistically; the video is just awful.
then, what religion is he? i thought he was christian...i used to love this song, but he was a bit of immature to get mad at everything bcause his dad died, everyone's dads die.

OK now I'm a huge Sting fan and I get the message of the song but seriously...this is one jacked up music video! Kinda goes along...in some ways...I guess.
Yeah, I think the key is in the final lyrics (as I hear them)-- "men get crazy in congregations, they only get better one by one." Kind of like Kierkegaard, except I comprehend Sting without secondary sources helping me out. What a nice, unpatronizing guy (I don't give a damn about celebrities ordinarily, but it comes through here, as in his passing mention of Nabokov in a Police song, and honestly expecting us to get it... obviously, I'm not talking about Kierkegaard anymore, but Sting)!
Now dude--or, whatever--which song do they mention Nabokov in? But yeah he was like an English professor at one point (ironically, in a Catholic university) so not only is he very educated, but it's also cool that he can speak out against the not-so-great aspects of organized religion as he does here.
Well said. The song is "Don't Stand So Close to Me."
I love the fact that he's very bright while apparently modest (one of the few performers thesmokinggun had to admit doesn't have any real backstage requirements, except that the venue people "do their best.") And that he's not afraid of seeming a little creepy: a potential stalker (Every Breath You Take) or a borderline pedophile English teacher (Don't Stand So...). Of course he's neither of those things, but also not ashamed to be a human.
I am big fan of Sting and The Police! I wasnt so much untill i went to The Police 25 year first reunion show in Vancouver on May 21st 2007! What a show. Sting just outdid himself and so did the rest of the members! The drummer was so into it you could tell they all enjoyed the show!!!
Yes... seemed like too simple a metaphor to me once, but now it just seems direct and eloquent: jumping from a ship nobody else knows is sinking. There's crippling, ignorant bliss in numbers, and the illusion's fatal.
Sting = Kev('I'd luv it')Keegan's ideal number 2 at the Toon......except that would mean we'll have more charisma-bypass, fence-creosoting Alan on TV!!!!!.....(it's a Soccer thing(for Americans))
"...how come he never lived here?" I too love this line. the mood of this video is quite different from the way I imagined this song and the feeling(s) this album evokes on a personal level. until now, somehow I missed the humor in the song, but I'm still partial to the version in my head because it represents something special to me. thanks for posting!
You appreciate Sting's right-hand guitar man Dominic Miller alot more in this song...Remember he wrote this song after his father passed away (A devoted recollection of his dad's life)--Great song Sting!
Stings wordplay in his songs are really humorous and serious at the same time yet he doesnt contradict himself in his maze of lyrics! Sting is a genius with or without the police! Even though i will admit that the police are awesome but they had their reunion tour and i went and it rocked but i really like Stings solo stuff equally!!!

"Men go crazy in congregations; they only get better one by one."
It comes from Charles Mackay's famous 1841 book "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds":
"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

Might be the best Sting song ever. This is one hell of a video as well. Mad About You was excellent as well.

Yes... seemed like too simple a metaphor to me once, but now it just seems direct and eloquent: jumping from a ship nobody else knows is sinking. There's crippling, ignorant bliss in numbers, and the illusion's fatal.

Hmm, that would make sense, wouldn't it? I was really confused at first!

Father if Jesus exists then how come he never lives here. Awesome
Obelisk2290 4 years ago
"...how come he never lived here?" I too love this line. the mood of this video is quite different from the way I imagined this song and the feeling(s) this album evokes on a personal level. until now, somehow I missed the humor in the song, but I'm still partial to the version in my head because it represents something special to me. thanks for posting!

Ahh there's his wife Trudie, back before they finally got married (@ 1:36)--Sting, you're one lucky son-of-a-gun!

You appreciate Sting's right-hand guitar man Dominic Miller alot more in this song...Remember he wrote this song after his father passed away (A devoted recollection of his dad's life)--Great song Sting!

Sting has always been a poetic song writer to me, which is to say different that just someone writing lyrics in order to make a song.

Sometimes i wonder if sting created life and God just took the credit for it!!
VanCityKyle 4 years ago
Stings wordplay in his songs are really humorous and serious at the same time yet he doesnt contradict himself in his maze of lyrics! Sting is a genius with or without the police! Even though i will admit that the police are awesome but they had their reunion tour and i went and it rocked but i really like Stings solo stuff equally!!!
