  • The most resonant is when Celine Dion is singing Power of Love live!

  • You seem a very happy person that makes others happy too. Awesome!

  • @Jouwl Thanks! Yes, giving to others makes me happy.

  • epic fail

  • The short answer is yes.

  • I'll show your videos to my kids. I want them to learn the basics of singing.

  • Oh, thanks. Sorry to take so long to get back to you.

  • Great instructions and glad I found you here. I just started to learn singing a few months ago first for the curiosity of finding out what kind of voice I have and then for the rather strange sensation of my 'heart' opening when I do hit that note... a certain elation perhaps. Not sure it makes sense but learning to sing is fun none the less...and a bit scary too ;)

    Thanks again Joy.

  • Sounds like you are doing the right thing and thank you for your kind words.

  • what do u all think of the singer in this blueroseband. Does he sound like he can sing good or not?

  • Do you mean the Blue Rose Rocket Band?

  • what do u all think of the singer in this blueroseband. Does he sound like he can sing good or not?

  • Blue Rose Rocket Band?

  • this video is actually quite helpful! but i have a question: is resonance/voice projected out nasal sounding? I'm trying to have a better resonating tone but each time my facial 'mask' vibrates, the tone becomes nasal for me.

  • Sometimes it "sounds" or "feels" nasal inside of you but it doesn't necessarily sound that way to others. Try recording yourself to see what it sounds like to the outside world.

  • thanks your so helpful.

  • You bet!

  • So that's why Beyonce has such a good voice... It's all hollow in there.

  • Yup!

  • u make me feel like im in kindergarden

  • I don't mean to make you feel so little. I just like to have a ton of fun doing what I do.

  • Your spelling of "Kindergarten" makes me feel like I'm in Kindergarten. No need to be rude buddy, she's only trying to help those who are interested.

  • u type like u r in kindergarden

  • are u trying to insult the lady? that's mean! if you don't like the video then don't f******* watch it!

  • I think he was insulting the original poster.

Oh well. She does a good job teaching here!

  • Good Video but it makes me want to sing "The Polka Dot Door".

    watch?v=pexVTVMkt8c

But why should complain about feeling young again...?

  • Yup, it never hurts to feel young again!

  • my question is, what does one do , to maintain thier voice, and not strain it, and things to avoid(food)

  • If you live in a cold climate, make sure you keep your throat warm at all times in the winter. Avoid iced drinks, especially sodas, vocalize everyday and sing often because you love it so much. Scales scales and more scales help more than I can say in this post. Do scales slowly, carefully listening to each note to make sure it's natural sounding. Don't try to sound like someone else. Find your voice. It's the only one in the world like it.

  • Im wonder what happens if you have a huge head?

  • Not sure what you mean.

  • wat da fuk

  • pretty strange, eh?

  • just another american dinlo

  • What's a dinlo?

  • hi, your videos are really really helpfulls...but i have a question...i can sing better high notes than low notes..i try to sing low but is not stable...

  • That's pretty common. There are ways to increase your range though.

  • Lol silly but very helpful! lol im singing in a talent show next year and trust me i need a LOT of work before singing at our family talent show. Idk? its some tradition that whe nwe turn 18 we have to sing in the family talent show (I think its stupid...but my family has a lot of wierd traditions). So im trying to get as good as I can. Please help me out with some tips!

  • Always pick an easy song and sing it well. Don't go for a hard one, especially if you're nervous about it and haven't sung much in public. Keep it short and in a key that is very easy for you to sing.

  • I have a question, so plzz answer it plzz. How do u know wen ur singing from ur diaphram, or throat, or watever, and how do u sing from ur diaphram?? plzz answer plzz and ty.

  • Try singing laying flat on your back on the floor. You should feel the diaphragm staying out as you sing.

  • Cold drinks, especially soda, are not at all good for the voice or health. Sweets? I eat dark chocolate but not before I sing in front of an audience or do a recording session. I don't drink water or juice with ice except on rare occasions.

  • hey , joy i sent u a message plz read it , thank u for ur effort :D

  • hey your lessons are really helpful, i have a question though, when my voice reaches a high note it just cuts out, silent, i can only go so far, im sure you have heard this situation before, any suggestions? thanx

btw you look similar to jodie foster lol

  • haha silly but i like the lessons

  • lol !

  • im not a good singer at all lol:/

is it possible that if i get singing lessons ill be able to sing quite well, becuase i play guitar and it would be so much better if i could actualy sing the songs too with out people going death, please help me!

  • There are lots of people who think they are not good singers or have even had a parent, teacher or friend tell them they suck at singing, but they have learned to improve their singing to the point that they are happy with their voices. Don't give up!

  • hey. i have people around me who says i suck, but there are those who say i can sing. i've always wanted to sing. i want to sing. i do, i do.

  • Good. Then don't listen to anyone who tells you that you suck. You have to believe in yourself and you have to learn from people who know how to help you. Otherwise, don't listen to them.

  • Hi Singbaby...This comment refers to the your comment below regarding voice muscles. How much of the voice muscle comes from the diaphram: that is, the muscles you build when exercising exclusively in the diaphram. How often should I exercise these muscles? I.E does (dog panting exercise you've posted) You are GREAT!!

  • Great question. Check out my articles on my website to help answer those questions. Also, I noticed your youtube name and I'm curious what it means? :)

  • Hey i got a question if you are horrible at singing at first, is it possible to be great at singing with singing lessons? please and thank you

  • It really depends on what you mean by horrible versus great. Can you tell me more?

  • there is also a difference between knowing how to sing and having a beautiful voice. Lots of people don't know there is a difference..

  • True. It's like anything else in life, some people are more naturally inclined to do certain things. For instance, I have to work really hard at business concepts but for some people doing business and thinking business is easy. We all have to find our spot in life. However, learning to sing better is something that just about anyone can do and besides being fun it's fantastic for your health!

  • so how is learning to sing better good for your health ?

  • It releases endorphins int he brain. They are the feel good hormones that help us to feel better about ourselves and life.

  • cool, thanks! I am so excited to start your lessons!

  • I've been taking lessons for almost a year and it doesn't seem to be helping. See my versions of "Crazy" by Patsy Cline and "Sweet Home Alabama" at my youtube page.

Should I ask for my money back or is it not too bad?

  • I couldn't advise you on the money matter but I'm not sure what the teacher has been teaching you. Have you learned any of the concepts that I've taught on these videos? Also, use the resources on my website. They can be useful too.

  • What videos are best for a complete beginner to singing?

For someone who wants to improve, and work on their voice to get it to its abosolute best?

  • I taught voice and vocal pedagogy for graduate students at a university and am now retired. I enjoy your teaching style. It's fun and informative.

  • Thank you so much for your encouragement. I've had a few university teachers give me a hard time so I very much appreciate your kind words!

  • This really helps!

    I was just wondering,

whenever I start reaching high notes, my voice gets a little shaky. Any tips on ho to get rid of that?

Also, are their videos on how to do vibrato?

    Thanks :)

  • Shaky comes from lack of strength in the muscles to allow you to sing. It's just like when you hold a weight straight out with your arm. It will shake if you haven't built up the strength in your bicep and tricep. The vocal muscles and those surrounding them have to be built up. Hope to do more videos soon.

  • I'm beginner but I have a determination to sing. One thing that annoys me is I have to stretch, in my chest voice, but there is this middle BREAK, where I can sing very breathy but just below falsetto, doesn't sound too good, I would love to sing in a manly rich voice with that range too way up there, middle C and beyond.

  • I don't use the word "break" anymore because it's actually called a register shift. There's a way to learn how to sing through it successfully and I hope to do a lesson on it someday.

  • I have a very unstable voice, my chords might shift under the pressure of normal breath or just drop like ice melting on a car window...

    any tips?

I really need lots of exercises, anyone give me links on some?...im needing a few directions

  • I have a bunch of exercises but they are not downloadable yet. Soon, I hope.

  • It really sounds like a breath control issue. Have you worked with my breath support videos yet?

  • no, but def give them a try tomorrow, I'm really a Baritone singer to exaggerate. But I like to think I can sing freely in todays high Tenor ranges, bit of falsetto too, (don't ask)

  • thanx for that. have you herd of these (throat sprays?) post to enhancer your vocals. have you herd or tried these before?

  • I've tried all sorts of throat sprays. What kind of sprays are you talking about?

  • This is helping a little, but I usally don't sing in English, more in Japanese.I sometimes can't get the right pitch or note. What kind of exercises can I do to help me?

  • Thanks soo much for posting this video! I was looking for something just like this. Whenever I sing a song by one of my favorite artist, I notice I can only go high like them in soprano. And when I sing higher, my voice seems softer, is there a way that I can get the full extent of my voice without being so soft?

  • omg,,i'm always lookin for info on singin..i play a few instuments well && would give em all up to sing well (not really i'd die w/out em) but i'm so horrable...that was the most simply anyones EVER explained something so complex!! I cant wait to go through the rest o ur vids!

  • Glad to help!

  • You remind me of my really nice and really patient kindergarten teacher!

  • That's nice, although my kindergarten teacher wasn't so nice. She didn't know how to make me stop talking or singing in class so I was sent to the bathroom and made to sit on the toilet (with the lid down) until I could learn to "behave" myself. Not such a great way to learn, huh? Maybe that's why I'm a bit nutty with these videos...just tired of being shut up by that kindergarten teacher!

  • Hey, when i sing there are points at which my voice like skip when i change my pitch or w/e u call it i don't know all the singing lingo yet. Also my voice gets kinda screechy at mid range are there some techniques that i can do to train my voice to be smoother?

  • How do i smooth the transition between singing from high notes to low notes or the other way around sometimes i get to a point where my voice get all screechy around the mid notes and there are like gaps or w/e when i change tones.

  • You're experiencing a register change. There's an easy exercise for this but I don't have it on tape yet. Stay tuned.

  • Yeah I can't wait for that video because I have the same problem.

  • teacher, how to use our voice without using the energy from the throat when we sing the higher tone?

  • Keep the larynx LOW when you go high. Use your deep abdominal muscles and diaphragm with full strength.

  • i love it how you alwayas reply to people's comment

  • Thanks. I love the people who trust me with their questions!

  • Hey i got a question if you are horrible at singing at first, is it possible to be great at singing with singing lessons? please and thank you

  • It's possible improve your singing voice & confidence level. Greatness can be defined in many ways. I count attitude as very high on the list.

  • you are very helpful and really awesome!

  • Sorry to take so long to reply. I've had computer problems. So Thanks.

  • Thank you so much for these lesson! You are an amazing teacher...Greetings grom Germany!

  • Danke and bitte!

  • i wanna learn how to sing where should i start

  • This one is a good start but be sure to work on the dog pant and slow leaky tire exercises to increase your breath support because most vocal problems come from a lack of good breath control. Be sure to check out the resources I have on my website too!

  • I have been doing your exercises. I am concerned though because I feel a pain in my head and my throat becomes soar when I do them. Its like the resonance in my head gives me headaches.

  • If you do them correctly, you won't get a sore throat. That usually happens if you're straining and pushing your voice rather than releasing it naturally. Not sure about the headaches but if you're getting headaches, maybe try doing the exercises more softly, more gently and without trying to go too high or too low for awhile. Do only a little bit each day, gradually increase as you feel comfortable.

  • I think you are really awesome! Which video of yours should I watch first, if I have never sung before in my life?

  • hi i have some trouble singing high notes and i read that if ur larynx raises ur doing it wrong but i cant help it is it neway i can stop it from raising or does it really matter

  • Keeping the larynx low is important and there really are ways for you to learn how to do it so don't give up.

  • i dont like you im just sorry

  • That's ok.

  • Thanks, it helps me alot. Keep sending on such video. Well done!

  • Glad to hear it helps you. I'll do what I can for more lessons.

  • well lady, i must say, you are really cute:) i wanna sing X3

  • Thanks. Keep singing!

  • Bouncing off bones~ haha XD

  • :) fun, eh?

  • I LOVE your videos! its reall helpfull :)

    Thanka ALOT!! :):)

  • You betcha!

  • heya!can you explain a clearer meaning of resonance?yeah...thanks ya!=D

  • why do i turn red when i sing. it feels like my larynx pushes up into my throat closing it. what am i doing wrong that is causing me to turn red and feel like my voice is restricted?

  • This question is pretty much the same as your last one so check out my answer to the first one and then get back to me.

  • Sorry, I thought the first message didn't send. I've been doing the dog pant and silly siren exercises and practicing not tensing up when I sing and have seen some improvement already. Are there anymore exercises I can do to strengthen my diaphragm and my projection? Thanks!

  • The slow leaky tire is a good one. Also, there's a good article on my website about "travel breathing" that uses the slow leaky tire in a different way that can help. And I'm really happy to hear that my lessons are helping you. Tell the whole world!

  • When i sing, sometimes my face turns red and my larynx feels like it is pressed high up in my throat Why is this? What am I doing wrong?

  • Ah, you're pushing the voice rather than releasing it. Go to my website and read everything you can there, especially my article about starting the tone.

  • Yes, she is cute, lol. ^_^

But I also like the videos. I really like how this one starts, with the surreal horse sound, lol!

I wonder if she edits these videos herself...

PS: As a filmmaker, I highly suggest putting maybe a mike (even a cheap one) as near to you as possible. Just so we can hear your wonderful lessons better. Better to not use the on-camera mike, because if you raise the volume in post, the background noise/static will be too loud.

    Mahalo!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. And yes, I do film and edit these videos myself. I wish I had a real camera person, sound technician and lighting director to help. Oh, and not to mention a makeup and hair person and director. What about a writer? Imagine how many people we could all help then. Are you in Hawaii?

  • haha you're funny! Im going to check out the rest of your videos... btw, you're pretty cute too!

  • Hey,thanks! Tell all your friends!

  • I have heard myself sing...I am not very good but I want to improve...my dream is to act and sing, musical theatre...but I cant sing...is there a way i can improve?

  • Absolutely there are ways to improve. You've taken a first step by asking that question. Now, go to my article, starting the tone, on my website (you type in starting the tone on my search engine at the site) and read it. Read the other articles too and study the pictures. Also, work with all of my videos and get back to me.

  • cool, thanks a million!

  • You bet! Be sure to let your friends and family know about these lesson tips too, and my website! Thanks.

  • I think I can sing a liitle but sometimes when I sing I can't breathe right (if it makes sense. And sometimes I can sing and then I can't. I can't hold notes either. When I do scales I d=find it hard to come back down.

  • The dog pant exercise and the slow leaky tire exercise would be good for you to do everyday as often as you can. Breath control is a major skill needed for good singing.

  • heh, she's cute...

  • hey, thanks.

  • what happens when you sing and it hurts your throte am i singing wrong?

  • If your throat hurts when you sing, there's too much tension in the muscles surrounding the vocal cords, probably the tongue, and in the back of the throat (pharynx). Go to my website, use the google search bar on it, type in Joy's Starting Tone, hit enter and read the article that comes up. That'll give you a clearer idea about how to begin the tone.

  • wow!!! just found your page im a singer , never had any form of lessons or training, just have always been able to sing x

i would be really grateful if u would look at some of my videos and give me any pointers u might have for me !!

im gonna fav all your vids and try and do them to improve my voice i also need to start doing warm ups too but have no idea what to do !!!#

thanks so muc ;] xx kt xx ;]

  • Welcome to singbabysing! And be sure to use my website for more info. We're happening and growing!

  • Get to a piano, and if you can do scales (or find someone that can show you), start at middle C and work your way up the entire octave. Try the other octaves too. Hope that helps.

  • Good comment! A great way to approach scales is to make them move you musically. I had a fantastic master class once with a famous pianist who said that if you can't feel the music in a scale you won't feel it in a song. It's a mental approach that allows you to get more done with 15 minutes of practice than 3 hours without thinking that way.

  • Thanks. I have been singing (and drumming) for almost 40 years but just started to teach recently. I will be checking out your website soon, as I am always looking for ways to improve myself, as well as my students.

  • That's great! Keep me posted on how that goes for you.

  • Is it possible for a broken nose, or for tonsils to interfere with your singing voice, Stupid question but hey.

  • was wondering if having your tonsils in / out made a differece at all ? mine are still there thx

  • Hey..i can sing low notes but i cant get my voice high please help me

  • You are a great teacher!

  • Thanks so much! Be sure to use the resources on my singbabysing (dot com) website too and tell all your friends!

  • so ummm, do you

have any advice or tips to help me out

with this problem? I'm a baritone! and

have big breaks in my voice, when I try

to use my full voice, it go's right into

falsetto, and kinda of sounds squeeky. 8P

    thanks a mill,

    -chris

  • Hi Chris. Without working with you face to face, it's hard to tell if I can help. My 1st thought is to have you lie flat on your back, legs uncrossed, palms up beside you, eyes closed. Then do the silly siren VERY SLOWLY AND GENTLY. As you get to a break point, SLOW DOWN again. If it wants to break, stop and start again, MORE SLOWLY. This will give you a chance to observe what's going on inside more.

  • I've just subscribed!

and I'm really curious if you have

ever worked with anyone that has had

vocal cord disorders. I came down with

laryngitis, and had reflux!, and after

that, my doctor says I developed a gap

between my vocal cords, but there aren't

    any growths or scars...

  • I'm sorry to hear about the gap, but if there isn't any growth or scar tissue, did they give you a prognosis as to whether or not voice therapy could help?

  • Actually no, I was not able to

visit the doctor for a check up

because I lost my insurance. But

he seemed to be sure that it was

    not anything that couldn't be

    corrected with proper speaking

    and of course singing.

  • Whew, that's good to know!

  • I guess My voice changed to eliviate the pain, and now it's stuck in a strange position. One day I woke up from an awkward position with my head tilted against the pillow and when I talked, I could feel both of my vocal cords working together, but it went away as I got up. It made my day! but that was a few months ago, and my voice isn't better. U_U
  • I think I wrote something to you about what you might try to do. Maybe in the messages area?

  • Is a beautiful singing voice something everyone can Possess, like guitar skill? or can only certain people be adept? because my voice is unpleasent :/

  • Hey, posting those free videos is a great display of character ^_^ but i have a question: can everyone learn to sing well? i have a...ugly voice, to say the least, but it would be cool to sing, can i still learn? rather not bother if it's not something i physically capable of.

  • Hey, first of all i think it's terrific posting these videos purely to help people, it is a true act of character.

I'd like to ask you though: Is singing possible for everyone (not counting impairments)? I've been practicing guitar, and i'd like to be able to learn to sing, but my voice is, uhh...ugly xP I'd like to learn to sing, but if my voice is not up to snuff, oh well, ill stick to guitar, what do you think?

  • I'd like to encourage you to think of your voice differently because it IS possible to learn to sing better for just about anyone. This doesn't mean you'll become a 'star' but it means you'll feel better about how you sound & hopefully won't use 'ugly' to describe your voice.

  • i see. thanks for the response ^_^

  • You betcha!

  • Some people might argue about that :D hehe.. ;)

  • Yep!

  • Hi, sing.b.s, erm... i was wondering if you could hav a look at the video of me singin, you might want to turn the volume down as it's computer recorded, i'm starting to take your singing lessons- can you tell me what you think so far?

  • Listened to them. You have a pleasant voice but I would work with you without the words to the song. Try singing the song only on an "aw" vowel. It will help your resonance and pitch to be more clear.

  • haha this is really helpful. how do you vibrate?

  • Thanks. It happens naturally when you focus the sound towards the bony area between your eyes or towards your nose. Check out more information on my website for more help.

  • wait what... you cannot talk soley about resonance in the skull without mentioning that it effects the way you hear your own voice.. and that to truly know how you sound you have to record yourself...

  • It does affect it, but here's a concept that really helped me a lot when I was studying: DON'T listen - FEEL! When I hear a recording I say to myself, "That doesn't sound the way I hear myself." When I focus on FEELING the vibrations in my head & entire skeletal system, everything works more naturally. Recordings serve some purpose, but think about what people did before recordings were available. My best practice place is hiking alone high on a mountain trail.

  • You're great for doing this.. thanks!!

  • Thanks so much and be sure to get more help at my website, where there are other resources and articles. Also, tell your friends and family about these videos and my website!

  • everyone says im the worst singer ever:(

  • Hey, don't let anyone discourage you! All of us have room for improvement, including me. So, focus on working on getting totally clear pitches out of your voice and breath control. Never lose sight of your own inner vision of your voice. That's the one that no one else can touch!

  • I cant begin to tell you how happy I am that I have found you. I have been playing guitar for some time and have wanted to work on my vocals and I found you at just the right time. The information you provide is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

  • That makes me really happy. Thanks and don't forget to check out the help that's on my website and tell as many people as you can!

  • Wow you awesome.

  • Aw shucks. Thanks!

  • nice job! you are have a especial simpathy when you teach, it´s rare nowadays...

    keep the good job!

    kisses

  • Thanks so much!

  • You're very welcome! Tell all your friends about it and be sure to use the resources at my website too!

  • u lyk giving free voice lessons...wow!thx

  • you're very welcome.
