I'm not going to defend ANYONE that kills any innocent people anywhere in the world. However, torture is something the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel does. Torture is something that America should NOT DO. The idea of America is that we're above torture, we're above acting like terrorists, we do not resort to uncivilized behaivior. Torture results in mediocre intel at best. You can make anyone admit to ANYTHING while waterboarding them. That's where the problem exists.
There is no real debate on if waterboarding led to gaining useful information: it did. They are able to decipher what is nonsense and what is relevelant based on other information gathered. They succesfully foiled attacks on LA & London among others based on information obtained from waterboarding. The debate is:
1. What constitutes torture?
2. Could they have gotten this information using less controversial techniques?
3. Is this action ethical? Do the ends justify the means so to speak?
I think the problem is that being politically incorrect is identical to anarchy, and with an anarchistic government, nobody is safe. Even if terrosist acts HAVE been prevented thanks to torture, I don't think that it covers up to the pain that the many people who are INNOCENTLY tortured are exposed to. I wouldn't give a shit if millions of people were saved because I was tortured, because such acts is exactly what triggers new terrorism and that ironical circle goes on and on.
Note: The definition of terrorists is in most cases "freedom fighters". Just like you and me, they don't seek to destroy the world, but to make it an, in their opinion, better place. The only thing that makes us different is how far we are willing to go to achive this goal. Therefore, torture is a sort of terrorism too. Peace can only be achieved through dialogue and understanding, not by military power. The Western world has to learn that too.

I'm not going to defend ANYONE that kills any innocent people anywhere in the world. However, torture is something the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel does. Torture is something that America should NOT DO. The idea of America is that we're above torture, we're above acting like terrorists, we do not resort to uncivilized behaivior. Torture results in mediocre intel at best. You can make anyone admit to ANYTHING while waterboarding them. That's where the problem exists.

There is no real debate on if waterboarding led to gaining useful information: it did. They are able to decipher what is nonsense and what is relevelant based on other information gathered. They succesfully foiled attacks on LA & London among others based on information obtained from waterboarding. The debate is:
1. What constitutes torture?
2. Could they have gotten this information using less controversial techniques?
3. Is this action ethical? Do the ends justify the means so to speak?

I think the problem is that being politically incorrect is identical to anarchy, and with an anarchistic government, nobody is safe. Even if terrosist acts HAVE been prevented thanks to torture, I don't think that it covers up to the pain that the many people who are INNOCENTLY tortured are exposed to. I wouldn't give a shit if millions of people were saved because I was tortured, because such acts is exactly what triggers new terrorism and that ironical circle goes on and on.

Note: The definition of terrorists is in most cases "freedom fighters". Just like you and me, they don't seek to destroy the world, but to make it an, in their opinion, better place. The only thing that makes us different is how far we are willing to go to achive this goal. Therefore, torture is a sort of terrorism too. Peace can only be achieved through dialogue and understanding, not by military power. The Western world has to learn that too.

I am just of the opinion that militant Islam doesn't understand peace through dialogue yet either and losing millions to a terrorist act seems like a pretty high price to pay while waiting for people to come to an understanding.

Well, at least TRYING to make dialogue is a start. What I meant was that if I was innocently tortured for an extended period of time, I'd probably whether I'd want it or not feel extreme hate and desire for vengeance - I maybe wouldn't even care whom I'd hurt in the process. And who gets to pay when the entire government is responsible? There you have the birth of a terrorist. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, though it is important to be open to different points of view in this matter.
