When LoTR was first released here in the UK - I mean FotR, it got a bit of a savaging, in particular on a show here called Newnight Review where they really seemed to depise it. I think because a lot of the critics were threatened by their 'classics' being usurped by a new classic. But their crits were ignored and the movie was huge success.

No, no... I think the human characters are largely real - it's the alien characters that have been getting the attention - they're made using some extremely-well-refined new motion capture system.

I'd trust Cameron to not bother with unnecessary effects, such as replacing real actors with simulations for no other purpose than showing off the technology.

For anyone who is confused, the cartoon remake with Aang was originally going to be called Avatar, but James Cameron had already bought the rights. That is why the cartoon remake is called Avatar: The Legend of Aang or Avatar: The Last Airbender. Hope this clears up confusion!
