I actually think it is relatively save and sensible to assume that extraterrestrial life would be very similar to terrestrial life. On earth evolution pretty much always brought forth the most basic, simple and conservative solutions to every problem. Why should this be different on another planet? Why should a creature develop two heads when one is sufficient, for example? If the conditions are similar, the resulting creatures will be similar too.
