Played a practice game on 1/4 field where all free hits had to be a self pass. Kids picked the rule up really quickly. Blocked out a square (no play/run) zone in the middle and the tempo + kom gebruijk increased. I was really pleased with the presentatie of the kids.
OMG i'm a 15 lvl1 umpire and its hard enough as it is but this will make the fine line even finer. I liked the old rules but i'm ging to be giving loads of free hits because people won't know this rule
The main affect the self-pass rule will have upon the game is the speed of play. This will be affected at all levels with the game becoming a lot quicker. There is no reason to say why hockey cannot still be team orientated. That is up to your team members and not this new rule.
This will be so interesting! I hope it will work out oke. I think that it will do great on hogh level playing but with the lower not so good teams it will be drama!
One element not covered by the video: a player takes a self-pass freehit and runs straight at, and into, an opponent who is trying to retreat so as to be 5m away. We treat this as a manufactured foul and reverse the decision.

At 5:55, the video image shows an attacking free hit, within the 23m zone, travelling over 5metres to another attacking player, who then plays the ball into the circle....however the audio related to this clip is discussing how an attacking free hit within the 23m zone is not allowed to be directly into the circle.
Another change to be added for the 3rd revision I suspect.
That said however, the video has been extremely useful!
In the FIH's Briefing for Umpires 2009 (updated 20 April, 09), it states on page 13 that "At a self-pass the ball must travel at least 5 metres from the point of the free hit (not necessarily in a single direction) before the taker himself can play the ball into the circle".
update it, it is incorrect!

Voor het nemen van een self-pass geldt:
1. Leg je bal duidelijk stil;
2. Geef een duidelijke pass naar jezelf;

when there is a 16 yard hit for the start of the game, can we start the game by giving a self pass?

Very useful, many thanks. It still feels wrong not allowing a long corner to be hit directly into the 'D'!
Defenders have enough time to react to it so it's not dangerous.
The self-pass is intended to speed up play which it does, except for attacking free hits given within 5m of the 'D', where it slows things down.

This contradicts what you say at 5:15.
I guess a 3rd revision is needed! :P
