this clip is pretty awesome, just because of the sheer unbridled joy when Jeremy spazes out on completion of the lap. I recall being drunk while watching this on TV when it happened, and getting really emotional along with Jeremy, pumping my fists in the air in celebration.

The Adagio for Strings in the background most definately helps make this a powerful clip, great choice in music.

Average is totally meaningless on a track. It only apply's when the both of them ran head on in the same car on a straight line. Even a moderate driver could finish only a couple of seconds behind a racing driver. Cause the difference is only in the gear shifting speed (which revs, etc.)

47 seconds is like riding the perfect line and taking corners twice as fast. (late on the brake, early on the throttle). That's skill and even if JC ran it a 1000 times he'd only improve by 10-15 seconds.

No, you're completely wrong! 47sec is a huge difference in such a car on such a track. It's not just 5-6mph faster in average. Consider she had no better acceleration out of the bends and no better top speed on the straights, so she had to make all the speed difference in the bends. But these ar only a small part of the entire distance. Thus she had to be a lot faster there than JC.

Yes it was. If you do the math, she was on average going 5-6 mph faster BECAUSE she knew the track, is a professional race car driver, and about 30 kilos lighter than Clarkson.

Don't care about the average. The math is correct, but meaningless. Because she wasn't a mere 5-6mph faster in the bends and the same 5-6mph faster on the straights. She couldn't get much more speed on the long straights, thus had to do some estimated 20-30mph more in the bends, which make up a much smaller part of the track length. That means 47sec is a huge difference and a quite staggering performance in a car she wasn't familiar with.

On the track, even on the straights you'd be hesitant to keep your foot down; there are an insane amount of unexpected turns.

If you're hesitating or doing unexpected turns, you need to get more practice. You not only have to know the track, each and every bend and bump, but also watch every shadow and each pebble or twig on the tarmac - messed up by amateur drivers who did unexpected turns. And you need a comprehensive sense and flair for what a car can cope with, and what is too much. Only then you might be able to achieve a huge 47sec gain in one lap, in a heavy saloon car you've never driven before.

I'd really like to invite you for a spin on the ring, in a 25y old, slightly enhanced A310, which is capable of doing such a bridge-to-gantry tourist lap in well under 9min, even with a passenger. Not really record breaking, but fast enough to show the difference between a 9:59 lap and a 9:12 lap. Due to lack of top speed and acceleration, you can be assured, that's not a constant 5-6mph throughout the track!

well its got over 100 corners, which is an enormous number of corners to remember. I have run the course once in a BMW m3 (not my car) and the first time I ran it I did it in 11 something. Which is pretty slow. You need to be a pro to race a diesel quickly on a course like that. The low bands will kill you if you dont have the torque.

A diesel has a lot of low end torque. The reason why you ran an 11 something was because you weren't familiar with the track. I'm sure if you played and studied the track in Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport then you would run lap times in the low 9's high 8's.

The problem with practicing using a video game is that they have the habit of adding or subtracting parts of the track. Then when you go to the track and actually try it, you have bad habits. Plus there was no feeling better than driving fast and not knowing what is around the corner. Either way it was the best 15 euros I ever spent.

The track compared to those games is very similar. Yes there are some differences but Forza and Gran Turismo are simulators so the developers try and get as close to the real thing as possible.
