I don't get why people upset when BMW tries out new things. Besides, so called "purists" are usually not the people who buy new BMWs. Uhm. You obviously dont know how to maintain a bmw. These cars need attention a honda does not. I own a 98 M3, a 85 535i and a 92 325i. You need to maintain these and they will not let you down, slack on the maintenance and they will kick you for it ;)

To the typical upper-middle class person, a big car they can move all their crap in is more appealing. It's a shame, but if BMW specifically tried to cater to purists, they would go out of business.

The new M series are fine cars, but how is BMW going to sell lots of them at prices over 50K U.S., especially since you justifiably need to make an effort and have an understanding the car will cost a bit to maintain???n BMWs are not agricultural machines. Give us back simple, efficient designs...
While I agree that they should keep the small displacement, high revving NA engines, I respectfully disagree about SMG. The SMG is a really cool technology, and it can shift in a much more consistent manner than a human can. I have an E21 track car, and while I love heel-toeing and the like, I really liked driving my friend's M3 with SMG as well. It let me focus more on the track and less on the shifts. It doesn't make it any less of a car, it's just a driver's preference.
i have an 87 M535i, i love older cars and the e30 rocks, i too hate all the crap they put in cars these days like sat nave n power EVERYTHING. buy a new M car n strip the shit out of it, that'd be pretty sweet, but it still couldn't hold a candle to the classic M cars.....ok im done.
funny coz my brother and i were toying around and wondering how awesome it would be if BMW did a modern E30,in my opinion the e30 was their finest hour.
