  • Besides everything else, hes a hell of a guitar player. Gorgeous

  • Another excellent song from Gene! As I said in an earlier post, outside of The Byrds, I've been totally ignorant of his music. No more! Maybe I can learn a few of Gene's tunes and play them for others to enjoy...

  • amazing! i love this song so much...

  • great

  • This performance is outstanding. I am glad the house band was sympathetic. The steel guitar and mandolin playing is stellar. But the star of the show is Gene (and Carla). According to Carla, Gene was real ill when this was shot.

  • Seek out everything this man recorded either solo, with the Byrds or the Dillard and Clark albums. He was a true genius and such a wonderful songwriter, saw him play in London many years ago now, totally brilliant. Sadly Gene dies far too young.

  • Gene Clark is forever!

  • I don't think this man had a single bad song in him.

  • great

  • What show was this from? I would love to shake the program's director hand.

  • Gene Clark live met naast hem Carla Olson. Op z'n Gronings, dat kon minder. Heel mooi.

  • Stunning.

  • beautiful. this song might sound country but since I don't like country much by itself (really) it has to have some other genre influence .. folk or whatnot. All i know is the the tears I have are universally flowing down my face .

  • @11xzxzxz Learn to love Country. It used to be excellent and Gene knew it.

  • @GeorgieWise It's too late for me but I do appreciate old country more than new (almost nothing new I like). But this is just a gorgeous song that is not like most country. RIP Gene .. I feel a whole lot worse since you've been gone.

  • i am glad mcguinn and clark met, it was a good seed in the time plan that yielded a diverse tree by the river of life under which have gathered many friends to enjoy the shade and sounds

  • Beautiful and sometimes hidden.

  • Found this clip just browsing and it blew me away. Beautiful song. the album is full of great songs like this. A gem!

  • Legend!

  • Can anyone tell me what guitars those are? (They don't appear to be the Taylor or Epiphone florentines) Thanks!

  • david crosby once said only one of the byrds had genius that was gene

  • @tonyiow1 Maybe McGuinn was not a genius but he was a leader, producer and a great song writer and never split the group up. I think his singing and guitar playing was good enough too.

I have my personal view of Mr Crosby but that I will not let out here.

  • By the mid-eighties I`d decided Gene Clark had burned out and was a spent force - his great songs years in the past - then I heard this and it just about took my breath away. It is one of his best songs ever. In the years leading up to his death he had a creative renaissance, the songs written for the intended follow up album with Carla Olson being as dense, complex and heartbreaking as anything he had ever done - of course they were never to be properly recorded.

  • So Beautiful. Why do so many greats songs (for me) have "gypsy" in the title or lyrics. Just an age old question for me and boring for everyone else.

  • simply wonderful

  • Gene's best song for me is I'll Feel A Whole Lot better (when you're gone) and I don't get most country songs except this is a beautiful haunting song. I like Country's influence on rockers like Neil and so many other great rock or folk singers though.

  • gene is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. great one here. I can hear this in my head as a byrds recording. mcguinn on rick 12 string and clarence white on tele b-bender. wow it sounds good.

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 I think Clarke and White were never together in the Byrds. Gene left quite early.

  • @ClubViking63 when I said what I did I ment it as a whimsy, a suppose.not an actual past event in byrds history. like brian wilson of the beach boys, gene too feared flying and getting in front of large crowds,so he stopped touring with the byrds on the road early on . he did however continue like wilson did with the beach boys to record with the byrds and write songs for the group till after the third album.

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 Yes, I like your way to compare Gene Clark with Brian Wilson, he did show up on some recordings in the late 60´s, and later on also on some Burrito´s recordings.

But I must say I think Brian Wilsons importance for the Beach Boys was a bit greater than that of Gene C´s for the Byrds.

  • @ClubViking63 oh certinly...the beach boys had nothing without brian. the byrds could always cover a dylan song and get in the top 40 even without clark. but clark gave them great original songs." I'll feel a whole lot better" , is an exsample. its one of their classics and a big hit back in the day. thanks to clark.

  • @ClubViking63 You are right,Gene left in'66 then came back briefly in late'67 for 1 tour with the Byrds.

  • @jonruss56

Chris Hillman stated recently that Gene should have had a writing credit for Get To You from Notorious.and he may have sung harmony

    Jim

  • @ClubViking63 Clarence White joined the Byrds in the studio with Younger than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers and full time with Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Gene also appeared on TNBB but I don't think that he was ever in the studio with White.

  • Turn that V-twin over again, hit the road in a two-wheel symphony, your face in the wind, and find another love to replace the one that's waned... Man it's all too familiar. Great biker song. Soulful & melancholy, you gotta love the harmony that Carla lends this great but virtually unknown Gene Clark song, like others written & performed by this Byrds co-founder. Check out darling Carla returning a smile at 2:56-2:57. R.I.P. Gene! Man you were gone too soon!

  • Good lord this is beautiful.

  • @Keepsu Sure it is. I remember The Textones, but I never realized Mr Clarke was involved there. He died too soon we all think. There is still a lot of songs too listen from him....I still pity him how Geffen Records put him down in the 70´s.

  • Isn't it funny there are still so few views. I have never heard a Gene Clark song I haven't liked. I think my favorite is "In a Misty Morning". I just really seem to relate to it.

  • Gene Clark died of a broken heart, that's all there is to say...

  • @deepfreezevideo Sorry to say, he did not die from a broken heart, but from too much drinking....

  • Ironic, isn't it? During their heyday, and for long afterwords, the most 'known' Byrds were McGuin and Crosby. As the years continue to pass, Chris Hillman and Gene Clark are finally being seen as the 2 most talented to emerge from that awesome combination of players.

  • Thank you Gene for the music and memories. I'll set you free this time.

  • Gene was one of the most underated writers of the period. With regret, some time was not spent in his company often, for his love of tilting the glass was hard to follow. But his music, lives in the heart of any preformer as the melody becomes apart of your soul and the riker of the c cord lives on if only Gene could have..........

  • OMG!! Love It!!!!

  • Makes me proud to be a Missouri boy.

  • First time I've seen any footage of this song. Fantastic. great Song , Great Album & without Doubt the most under rated artist of the Rock era.

The Pioneer & Artist who somehow never gets the credit he deserves, Oh & what a song writer too. Everything Gene Recorded is Gold & Precious to me!

  • @ex1le444 Clark is so honest and so pure in his writing and performing that he may always be underrated in a world that values surfaces and lies. Still, his fans know what a terrible burden he bore for the sake of being true. He'll never be forgotten. Never.

  • Full moons, first snowfalls, lone coyote singing-- this singer walks the spirit world in grand fashion

  • Love this song and Gene Clark, one of my favorite singers.

  • rocker53zero,thanks this is beautiful! x

  • what a very powerful performance, prefer it over the studio cut

  • 24th of May,another year the same feeling,my best inspiration in life,my friend.

  • pretty good song

  • (Paraphrasing Bob Dylan)

This is one of those songs that is powerful, so sad and sweet, it almost makes you want to drive your car off a cliff.

Yes, I realize that Zimmie made that statement about Roy Orbison's singing but I think Roy would agree here, that this song qualifies in that category.

  • This brings tears to my eyes.

Gene Clark died of a broken heart, no question about it.

  • WOW the Byrds were a super band ! Clark,Parsons,Hillman,Crosby and MacGuinn !All great song writers in one band.

  • Gene, you will never be forgotten. Your music is like no other - poetry. Your gift, your voice, your gentle spirit will remain with us forever. You "take my breath away." I play your music every day just to hear that beautiful voice. The Byrds were nothing without you.

  • The Kennedys also do a fine version of this great song, on their album, " Songs Of The Open Road ".

    takamine1236

  • sul my canale ho provato a cantarla la canto sempre con il my babbo ovviamente l'roiginale è sempre la migliore :D

  • @joemgeek Gram Parsons took Nashville, mixed it with Bakersfield, and took the whole thing into outer space. It's not "insincere," it's one of a kind. It's sincere to itself. And that ethereal, slightly off key voice of his can not be duplicated.

Gene Clark, too, was a monster.

  • Crank her over once again...

  • What an awesome song! Gene Clark is a truly great singer/songwiter. Thank God we have all this great music from him. It's hard to imagine he's been gone almost 19 years now. He was a great live performer so check out all of the live performance DVD's and of course all the youtube video's from the Byrds on.....his voice changes over the years, but what a great voice! Gene Clark forever!

  • He s superb, love him, especially the stuff he did with Doug Dillard, He s up there with the best.

  • i hate that fuckin steel guitar, if that thing was gone this song would be sick..

  • This is awesome. I hope this and other YouTube clips of Gene bring him the respect he is due as one of the premier singer-songwriters of his (or any) generation. I recently bought "So Rebellious a Lover" (which this song appeared on)--what a beautiful album! You may be gone from this plane, Gene, but you are loved and definitely not forgotten.

  • @skipwaytube 10/4 partner.....forever Gene & not forgotten in Spirit........a legend to say the least

  • I wouldn't say that Gene's a notch beyond Gram... but he sure is just as talented as a songwriter and singer, and in his best moment he's on the top of the world.

  • awesome performance. beautiful complimentary vocals by carla olson, too. after listening to rock music for over 40 years, I only recently found gene clark and what a discovery it was!

if you enjoy the likes of gram parsons and flying burrito brothers, I daresay gene clark is even a notch beyond gram.

for starters, I would suggest the "fabulous expedition", "no other" and "white light" albums...and that`s just for starters! songs like "train leaves here this morning" were made for eternity.

  • Gene is in Heaven, looking down at all of us.......he is singing to the angels. this man was ahead of his TIME, even in 1965 with the Byrds............they were lucky to have Gene than...........

  • And Rick Danko is singing harmony

  • thank you, I didn't know that JMKT.......sing along partner, what a beautiful song sung by 2 heros

  • Yeah. I'm ashamed to admit it but it's the first time I've heard Gene since he quit the Byrds 40 plus years ago. This sounds exactly what I had been looking for at the time. Too bad I didn't hear it then & run out & buy it. I'll try harder to catch up. I'm late but...I miss you Gene. The guy will go down along with Colin Bluntstone as the most underrated lead singers in history,

  • No Other is absolutely stunning on first listen, but I agree there is something about that is a bit over produced after multiple listenings. Luckily with the extended remaster you can remix it, taking some of the less over produced and make your own mellower mix onto a CDr. In any case Gene Clark was a genius, take it song by song. Clark was a great American painter of words and song.

  • Man!! What an AWEsome tune & performance.....

what album is this on? Seeing this makes me realize that the answer to Gene's downward

slide & lack of solo success might have been remedied by him going to Nashville and

having somebody really good produce him in that setting. He was such a natural as a country singer.I think the country audiences would have given him the support he so sorely lacked in the pop/folk world.

  • One of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, no question.

Carla Olson is brilliant on the album so rebellious a lover, check out "every angel in heaven"

  • You've got that right man,Clark's and Parsons songs are still played by me on my stereo.

  • Wonderful voice Gene Clark has. Great writer too.

  • Agree, a great melody in those minor chords. An American duo called The Kennedys recently recorded a fine version of Gene's song.

    takamine1236

  • THE BEST SONG EVER!

  • Gene Clark was such an inspiration. He's

up there with Gram Parsons in his influence

    on classic rock artists. RIP

  • Gene Clark was a genius. Check out his album "No Other". One of the best albums ever

  • Yeah, "No other" is great, though after some listenings my opinion is that some songs are great, some songs are just a fill out, I really cant see this as a total concept album. He had something coming but the recording of the album was not as it had could been.

  • The way he moved on stage, the song, the voice, magnificent.

  • Great harmony and song.

  • Love that performance , and that gorgeous pedal steel guitar from Hal Rugg.

  • Gram used to cry on stage singing his songs. I think that is sincere.

He just had a thin voice, but a voice I love.

  • was sweet steel, the whole song was classic Clark

  • This is great. Ive been a fan of Carla since her Textones days. Can't find any Textones on YT.

  • Gram and Gene were both fantastic and they both did their own thing. I actually have no preference between them. I think they are both wonderful.

  • I don't know how you can feel that way... In my opinion no singer feels more sincere to me than Gram, but.... you know what they say about taste... like the butt its divides :)

  • one of my favourite tunes. anyone know who played steel on this rendition?

  • jay dee maness

    aint it sweet!!

  • what a song... No Other is surely his masterpiece... and the only inscription on his gravestone. Wish i'd been a bit more musically conscious around this time, how i'd ve loved to have seen this.

  • What a beautiful song. How many other songs are yet to be released that are hidden?

  • Beautiful--but not hidden. Available on the classic "So Rebellious A Lover" album

  • @McGarVision

Produced and mixed by J. Michael Huey (formerly of The Classics IV)

This was the last album Gene recorded.

  • @McGarVision ---which was produced by J. Michael Huey.

  • Can`t stop watchin it

Thank you Geno may you ride forever

  • Nice. Very, well done.

  • Don't forget that it was Gene that left the Byrd's and not the other way around... but I do belive that music history would have looked a lot different if he wouldn't have left.

Though... I see it as very non productive putting down Gram Parsons, he had nothing to do with Gene's leaving of the Byrd's, and tehy are both great "feeling" singers, although I would rank Gram higher, doesn't mean I put Genen down, he's up there with the best of 'em...

  • An amazing singer and songwriter, and one of his most beautiful songs. Thank you so much!

  • Great pix of Gene and others on Carla Olson website.

  • Gene was by FAR the most talented Byrd. And he is lightyears ahead of Gram Parsons, especially singing wise.

  • @ZombieEaterz

And he was dissed and mistreated horribly.

  • @ZombieEaterz Gene invented Country Rock & wrote a lot of excellent Songs, way more than Gram ever did. Now I'm a fan of Gram Parsons, who isn't? Burrito's, what's not to like? But why doesn't Gene get the recognition Gram has when without doubt he was a more influential & let's face it greater artist.

  • @ex1le444 Hi I am a fan of Gram and of Gene, who can we listen the most?

I think this is the best Gene ever did, well some Byrds song he was the One!

But I like him here, how he could overcome his spirits and go up onstage.

His 70´s album is his best, but this is good too,.

  • @ZombieEaterz Yep!

  • @ZombieEaterz...Would have been nice to hear them work together. Love listening to both of 'em.

  • Perhaps the most under appreciated songwriter of his era. Gene Clark truly like no other.

  • great gene, thanxs from brazil!!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this.I was unaware any video of Gene's later stuff existed.

Got to be on a par with Gram & Emmylou?

The most talented in my opinion of any of the original Byrds. Lucky to have seen him once in Glasgow opening for Thunderbyrd.

  • I think I saw him on that tour - 1977? He had something almost weird I have never seen in any other performer. You can see the way he moves his body with the music in this video. To see him live was spellbinding.

  • I once got to tell him he was, and still is, my favorite male vocalist. It was at the Houston Texas Opry House during a Byrds reunion. I love you Gene, like a son loves his dad, and I loved my dad. God (even though I don't believe in you) I loved my dad.

  • Thanks McGarVision for sharing this awesome awesome song and vid with us! I've never heard Gene sing outside of the Byrds until now. I'm totally blown away by his talent and the passion of this song. I found chords and lyrics online last night, and after listening to this vid many times to catch some of Genes style, I'm playing and singing Gypsy Rider...wow! Thanks again.

  • gene's albums are fantastic, full of beautiful songs and deeply sad. No two sound anything alike. Check out Dillard and Clark, No Other, White Light, Two Sides to Every Story, and of course So Rebellious a Lover. Can't miss on any song on any album.

  • Indeed! So Rebellious a Lover gave, I guess, a new lease to life for Gene Clark, and boy did he use it for good. Some say that So Rebellious LP launched the alt Country scene and I agree with that statement. Two Sides to Every Story is one of my alltime faves but it seems to be stuck in some kinda legal limbo as it has not been released on CD. Rhino, please give us a deluxe Two Sides to Every Story!

  • Gene sems to have gone back to the future with Carla, to beautiful results. Gypsy Rider and Almost Saturday Night seem to me to be as influenced by his days on The New Christy Minstrals as they are to Fogarty and the Byrds. Bob Dylan told Gene that he would have been proud to have written "White Light".

  • when did Gene die??? all his tunes are so great....you can't miss on any.....God, may he rest in peace........

  • So beautiful of a tune........what can be more great.

  • All due respect, the Byrds were great. Gene Clark's work after the Byrds exceeds even them. Though you can argue the sum of the parts. I think Gene worked on a golf course which was partially designed by his dad here in Bonner Springs Kansas.

  • wondrous gift, this! It does not get any better than Gene!!

  • Even the musicians behind him applauded. Was any singer ever missed so much?

  • Bellissimo!

  • A great writer and one of his best songs. The Kennedys do a great version on their recent cd Songs of the open road. 2 of Gene's songs are on the Robert Plant and Allison Kraus cd, but they crucify "Polly Come Home"

    takamine1236

  • @takamine1236 Not sure why Plant and Krauss renamed "Polly" to "Polly Come Home," but they did a good version of it. I wish, if they do another album, they'd cover Gene's "Through the Morning, Through the Night" from the Dillard & Clark album of the same name.

  • Part American Indian, from America's heartland, landscaped golf courses until he left to sing folk and rock n' roll. He didn't know how to fake it and never fit in. He was just Gene. Byrd, Dillard. He's someone who shouldn't be on your TV box, where did he come from? who let him in? Sums up my 30 years of listening to and admiring Gene Clark.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this, unless it is Gene Clark again....

  • WUNERFUL!!! :-)

    Christian

  • Thanks a lot for posting these Gene Clark videos, they are simply great and "Gypsy Rider" is one of his better songs o the 80's.

  • Thanks for the comment...and glad you enjoy!

  • I have the MP3 and I always thought it was studio :0 Outstanding!

  • it is a studio recording. This is just the live version of the studio cut. Very rare.

  • I meant underappreciated!

  • I think he was unappreciated as well...his own band mates in the Byrds were resentful of his higher income from the great songs he wrote as a BYRD...And most alt-Country-Wilco-Ryan Adams fans do not realize that Gene laid down a lot of that musical road...

  • Well I hope his music can gain some new fans by hearing it here. Thanks for posting!

  • Oh this is so nice!

    Gene was so unappreciated!

  • I can't believe this exists! WOW. One of my favorite Gene Clark tunes. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • I love this version! Thanks for posting!

  • What a treasure.

  • thank you, WONDERFUL to see this on here!! Gorgeous version of an evocative song!

  • Peggy; your musictaste is very good. Indeed a wonderful song from Gene and Carla

  • hey..what about my musical taste?

  • I'm sorry; thank you for uploading this wonderful song.
