I've never seen the film, but I just finishde the book and I love it. It's funny, I didn't like Tony at the beginning, but he ended up being the book's most sympathetic character.
I love the film version. Couldn't think how one could adapt the book better - acting, music, direction, all wonderful. Perhaps the film's a little less bleak than the novel, though, and catering to our idea of poetic justice in that, unlike the novel, it doesn't have Brenda marry Jock at the end, which would leave Tony as really the only one who has been royally screwed by the proceedings.
God I miss Alec! Handful of Dust is Waugh's materpiece--I must say with regret that except for the scenes with Guinness, the movie can't live up to the book--it is Waugh's language that makes it--and it just doesn't come through in the film
The fate of Tony lingers in the memory long after the film has been finished. Excellent cast in this British drama. One of my favourite films including its soundtrack.

They regard themselves - quite rightly in many cases - as 'my children.' Sublime! Gotta love Waugh.
