I breed French Bulldogs and I have to say that confining them to an area at a young age IS necessary. Even before their eyes and ears open, they are rolling and dragging themselves around a lot. Using a laundry room or bathroom is not a good idea either because their small size makes it easy for them to get stuck in or under furniture. Most legit breeders use a "puppy crib" to protect their litters, so this IS NOT a cruel practice, even if the "crib" looks a little rudimentary.
